Hi, welcome to the Magix forums.

I will assume from what you write that you are using MEP Pro 2017 to capture your footage.

To capture VHS as 4:3 you need to set up your project to use that format. See the screenshot below

This is what you see when you start a new project. The highlighted box is actually a drop-down where you can select a wide variety of formats and resolutions; you need to select "PAL 4:3..." as per the screenshot or, depending where in the world you are, "NTSC 4:3..."

It still captures 16:9 video if I change project settings to 4:3.

I hope that MAGIX will make bug fix update to fix that.

But there is no bug to "fix"!

I regularly capture VHS video for conversion to DVD, admittedly using VPX (latest version) but it is always 4:3.

Also, please bear in mind your version of MEP is now rather "old"; the current latest version is 18.0.2.225 (aka MEP 2019), as well as being the Steam version, which seems to not be absolutely identical to the full version as purchased from Magix.

Please post a screenshot of your Project Settings screen, the same as the one I posted above. Are you exporting your footage, e.g. to DVD? If so, please also post a screenshot of the DVD Burn screen, or the Export screen so that we can see your settings.

One other thought: you say you are attempting to capture to MPEG-2? I realise this is one method of avoiding an extra conversion stage but I always capture to the default .avi and then convert to MPEG-2 as part of the Export/Burn to DVD process. I have never seen any noticeable quality loss by following this method.

@MovieEditorr

Hi

Assuming you are using a USB video converter to connect the VHS recorder to the PC - if not then how are you connecting the VHS to the computer?

The selections for setting up the device, recording format and aspect ratio should be as follows:

Select the USB recording option as shown in the image below

then set up the recording parameters - referring to the image below

  1. Select the USB device
  2. Select the Advanced button
  3. Select the Format button
  4. Select the output size as 640 x 480 from the drop down - see note below

Also set up the frame rate you require and click OK twice to get back to the recording dialog.

Select the recording save location and video file name in section 2 of the recording dialog.

Note: there is no point in setting the resolution higher than 640 x 480, there will be no improvement in quality - VHS has a lower 'resolution equivalent' than standard DVD.

VHS resolution is approx 480 x 320 (NTSC) and 576 x 310 (PAL) and S-VHS is approx 480 x 530 (NTSC) and 576 × 520 PAL.

@MovieEditorr

I am puzzled why you are still getting this problem.

Did you try the 640 x 480 resolution setting which is 4:3 - from your image you have selected 720 x 576 which is not strictly 4:3 - it is 5:4 AR ?

It looks like you are using a Conexant Polaris Video Grabber does the Video grabber have its own control panel for setting up the capture settings.
