can I stop my program from freezing, when I have just copied over a tape recording ready for cleaning etc?

I have a Dell Dimension 5150 XP Pro computer 2.5GB memory

it has been warmer weather, but even with a fan infront of the computer it happens, the computer is freshly just started up with no other prgrams running in the background

would increasing my memory stop the program freezing?

Hi

The full specification of your computer would help.

However IMHO your PC is under spec for video editting - the 5150 series were introduced in 2008 with a Pentium D single core processor and 512MB to 3.2 GB of RAM depending on the options purchased.

Your comment . . . . even with a fan in front of the computer . . .  leads me to suspect that the processor is overheating and causing the crashing - this is very likely because video processing / editting is very processor intensive and generates a lot of heat on older processors.

Has the computer ever been cleaned inside?  It may be the heatsink is clogged with dust etc and requires cleaning.

My advice would be to upgrade to a modern PC which are more energy efficient and have the capabilitiy of running software such as ACL without overstressing the processor - you would of course be upgrading to Windows 8 and you will also have to upgrade your software to Windows 8 compatible versions.

Windows XP is no longer supported by MIcrosoft so there are no more security fixes or updates available.
