can I move c;\program data\Magix ?

ggrussell wrote on 5/2/2013, 12:27 AM

Just purchased Movie Edit pro 2013 Plus.  When i installed it, I noticed a huge amount of files being stored in

c:\progran data\Magix with many subfolders

Is there a register hack to move this folder to another drive?  I only have 128GB SSD and feel there is no need to have all these files on the boot drive.

Hi

AFAAIK you cannot move this the Porgram Data folder or any of its contents without giving yourself a major headache with udating.

See this topic for reference to Windows server 2008 applies to Windows 7

Thanks john, butyou misunderstood the question.  NOT c;\program data

just the Magix folder.  I'll just search the registry to see if I can find an entry for it.

Hi

. . . . Thanks john, butyou misunderstood the question. . . . .

On the contrary I understood what you are trying to do.

Microsoft do not recommended doing this.  I do not think it is possible to do this for a single program.

John

There should be an entry in the registry that Magix points to a folder.  Should be easy to change.   If you can't help, why do you bother answering questions? Obviously you know nothing on how the registry works.  I've been hacking that file ever since it was WIN.INI text file.  I was just hoping that someone has already done it for MEP 2013.  Guess I'll just take the time myself.

Magix should be more mindful of where they store those files.  I certainly don't want my SSD full of files that I will never use.  Of course if I can't these files moved, MEP 2013 will be removed and become yard sale item.

Pretty rude, that. John consistently answers more questions than any other user of this site.

Obviously you know nothing on how the registry works.

An astonishing and baseless assumption!

If you do remain an MEP user, lose the attitude or reconcile yourself to getting zero help here.

Not rude at all.  Just my opinion.  I'm not getting any help here as it is so why change my 'attitude'?

I won't be purchasing anything else from Magix for sure. Movie Edit Pro 2013 has been moved to my second boot HDD drive which I don't use much. Most likely give it away or trash it.

Definitely  rude verging on the insulting and, unfortunately, an opinion that is based upon no facts and is unecessary, see the community rules section 1 and 11 available here:-

This is not a Magix problem this is your problem - If you wish to buck the system then as you have stated you will have to sort the problem out yourself.  Look at where most of the software manufacturers store the program data files and you will find they are using the Program Data folder.

I have pointed out to you that this is against Microsofts recommendations and the problems which will arise.

If you are not happy with this answer, there is nothing I nor any one else can do about your problem.

. . . .Obviously you know nothing on how the registry works.  I've been hacking that file ever since it was WIN.INI text file.. . .

On what basis do you make this statement?  You have no knowledge of my experience or IT qualifications and for reference WIN.INI and the registry are two entirely different beasts and cannot be compared..

. . . I was just hoping that someone has already done it for MEP 2013.  Guess I'll just take the time myself.. . .

The reason you are not getting any help on here for this problem is because no one has or is trying to do what you want to do.

A solution to your problem is as follows:

OS and programs installed on a large hard drive and use the SSD drive for the Windows page file only.

This will give you sufficient storage space for the software to be installed as intended by the manufacturers and the OS requirements, and a speed increase in the operation of the OS paging file system.  If in doubt read up on the Windows page file system and ways to increase performance.
