@Huckball1959 Hi, I don't remember what was in earlier versions, there's lots of Movement Templates in 2023 if you don't want to do it manually with the other controls. they add keyframes but you might not be able to see the one furthest on the right, if you can't click Size/position/rotation at the head of the keyframe timeline so the keyframe controls become active, click the first keyframe so it goes blue, then click the → to go to the next keyframe, then click the ◁ on your keyboard will bring it into view.

You can then go to Size/position/rotation, zoom out in the preview window so you can see what is happening,

Thanks for your help. Unfortunately, I was enquiring about the effect next to the Size/Position/Rotation effect. The one I need answers for is the Camera Pan/zoom effect. This is in Movie Studio 2023. If you find out anything I would appreciate it. Thanks again.

@Huckball1959 Hi. the one next to SPR is Section but I understood which one you were ref to, I was giving you options as the options that are there don't seem to meet your requirements,

There is a box with arrows that you can set the Direction of movement? Like i say I don't remember how or if it was different,

PS, I just Googled it, there wasn't many pictures but one from 2013 didn't look much different to today, that's why i didn't mention it, I've had this program 20yrs but I can't remember what the last version looked like 🤣🤣

Hi

. . . . In the older version of Movie Studio . . one could control the pan effect to move only left and right by clicking a 4 headed arrow to get this filter/option. One could also arrange tilts only. . . .

Which version of Movie Studio was this? This has never been an option, as you have described, in Magix Movie Studio (MMS) nor in its previous incarnations as Movie Edit Pro (MEP).

In addition to @Former users comment - in MMS 2023:

Camera Zoom Shot direction of pan is controlled by the selector shown below

Tilt and Rotation, and 3d Distortion are controlled by the Size, Position and Rotation and 3d Distortion effects respectively as shown below

For animating these effects you need to use Keyframing - if you are not familiar with keyframing see this tutorial.

THIS IS A SCREEN SHOT OF MY OLDER VERSION MOVIE STUDIO PLATINUM 16. I think circa 2019. Then I got the newer version Magix Movie Studio 2023 Suite and this program is completely different. I like it, but is completely different software that for the most part mimics the older version. I think you have answered my question though, and I thank you for your help.

Hi, yes completely different programs & if you upgraded from Vegas Movie Studio to Magix Movie Studio you likely fell for the Magix lie when 'upgrading'. You didn't upgrade you bought a completely different program,

In MMS there's no button like in the photos you posted, that arrowed button prevents the image moving vertically or horizontally when dragging the image/selection in the Pan/Crop window, it locks in horizontal, vertical or in all directions.

In some programs holding down the Shift, Alt or Ctrl key holds the image to the direction it's being dragged so -

In Section & Camera Zoom after a selection has been made -

Holding down Alt locks in horizontal movement

Holding down Shift locks in vertical movement.

I just tried it! Works like a charm. Thank you so much! I shoot a lot of ballet stage performances for a dance studio and this comes in real handy in post! Out of curiosity, have you ever used that function, or did you just figure it out for me? Either way, thanks again.

Former user wrote on 5/26/2023, 10:18 PM

@Huckball1959 I've owned Magix movie studio (it was Magix Movie Edit Pro) since 2004 & update it each yr, I use Vegas more now but like i say the Shift, Alt or Ctrl key thing is common on a lot of software to lock the selections' movement when dragging to the vertical or horizontal direction, .

In the picture you added earlier of Vegas Movie Studio, the closest modern version is Vegas Pro/Edit, holding the Shift key locks the movement of the Pan/Crop selection to the grid, vertical or horizontal.

In the picture editing software I use GIMP, (similar to Photoshop) it's Ctrl to lock the vertical or horizontal dragging motion.

Some programs like in Mocha (& GIMP) these keys control locking in the aspect ratio when enlarging the selection, either to keep it the orig size ie. 16:9 landscape or to make the selection a circle rather than an oval , or make the enlargement expand from the centre rather than a corner point,

Huckball1959 wrote on 5/27/2023, 6:41 AM

I puzzled and puzzled over the idea that they would not allow that simple function to exist in this software, but it had not occurred to me to think about key strokes, even though it makes sense with modern software. 😉 BTW, while I have a super smart helper like yourself, when I use the Camera Pan Effect, I (by use of the left and right arrows) move the cursor to one point to start the pan, and then hit the 5 button, which puts down a key marker. So far so good. Then when I go to arrow forward in time it does not respond, unless I take the mouse and click on the timeline somewhere (selecting the timeline window). This slows me down a little. Is there a better way of telling the software I want to continue using the timeline window without clicking on it first? Thanks in advance.

Hi,

You have brought up an interesting point about the left and right arrows. The arrows in the keyframe area are to go to next/previous keyframes.

The left/right arrows on your keyboard normally move the playback marker one frame left/right per press. However, when in Camera/Zoom Shot (CZS), they double as movement/nudging of the rectangular selection box. So, it depends which mode you are in. You will likely have to use your mouse to get back to normal mode and then left/right arrows for find-tuning, or press playback.

CZS is a front-end for the Size/Position/Rotation (SPR) effect, so it helps if you understand what SPR does in detail.

I suggest that you watch my 4 part series of tutorials on this. Here is Part 1:

So, it depends which mode you are in.

As denoted by the thin blue line at the top of either the Preview window (bump/nudge the crop box), the Media Pool (keyframe position adjustment) or the timeline (left/right arrow one frame). 😉

All my forum comments are based on or refer to my System 1.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

Is there a better way of telling the software I want to continue using the timeline window without clicking on it first?

@Huckball1959 Hi & in a way yes & no, the timeline cursor on the main timeline & the one on the keyframe timeline are synced, any change to the image either in the Zoom, Size... controls or moving the image on screen will result in a keyframe being created providing one is already created first,

So in other words create a keyframe, then go about moving either of the timeline cursors adjusting your image as you go, keyframes will be created automatically,

As mentioned he arrow buttons just take you to the next or previous keyframe,

If you click on a keyframe turning it blue, you can use the ◁ & ▷ on the keyboard to nudge it along the timeline, this can be useful using the arrow buttons to access the very far right keyframe which can go off screen & out of view, ie. - If you create keyframes along a clip. then shrink that clip on the timeline, those keyframes furthest right don't get deleted, they're still there & make things a bit confusing, so using the arrow buttons you can get to the them & delete or move them, watch the cursor on the main timeline when you click the ← → & see where it goes, if it jumps to the very end or beyond the end of your clip it means there's a keyframe there,

One thing you have to watch out for with keyframes is not all keyframes will be created, bit hard to explain so in this vid I reduce the size of the image & although i created a keyframe at the start with all parameters filled with keyframes only X & Y are created when i shrink the image, clicking the header of that tree or purposefully moving a control will add that keyframe, you need to do this to tell MMS that is where the transition in shape is going to start. Also in some cases if you haven't created a keyframe, any adjustment you make might not be recorded/keyframed, so it's best just to open the effect dropdown & see what keyframes are created 👍
