Bugs in MM2021: update

jan99 wrote on 7/29/2020, 12:51 PM

I did not manage to post an answer to the existing post(s) on this topic...so here's the new one.
There are quite a lot of bugs in the new MM2021. See Johne Baker's summary at https://www.magix.info/nl/forum/music-maker-2021-v29-x-x-x-bugs-list--1249510/ .
Having worked with MM2021 quite often (but only with music & soundpools) I reported to Magix support today what I see as the status right . Some highlights:

  • the many error messages at startup have gone thanks to the recent patch
  • stability is better, though still not overwhelming. MM2021 likes to be threatened like an old man: carefully, and not too fast. Compare it to the (still better) stability of the 64-bit Samplitude.
  • refusal to load 'Vita-related' (mostly older) soundpool-instruments. It now seems more or less solved: sometimes they load...and sometimes they don't. Solution (mostly...) is a simple restart of MM2021.
  • reloading some instruments in a reloaded project (this was the main issue of my question to Support) remains a problem....I still got to guide MM 'by hand', although often the program spontaneously points to the right directory...Does anyone have the same experience? (See screenshot below).

@jan99

Hi

In your image above, the location of the Soundpool file being looked for is odd, by default the Soundpool should be in the location:

C:\Users\Public\Documents\MAGIX\Common\Soundpools\Shop

Have you a customised Windows installation, install location of Music Maker or moved the Soundpool files?

Hi John,

Tnx for your reply. I deliberately changed the default location (even before MM2020 was there!) for all soundpools. The reason: my C-disk is an SSD, with limited capacity: some 220GB. The soundpools themselves need more than 100GB, plus some 35GB of VSTInstruments...
The (internal) D-disk is 1TB, so as many disk-consuming applications and data are installed/ located there. MM itself too is installed in D.
I did exacty the same thing with former MM2020 (and with Samplitude as well). No problem, if only you define the soundpool-location correctly in the program-settings.
MM2021 in fact knows very well where to search...but hesitates to load. It even happens that it does load f.e. pitch6, and then refuses pitch 5...from the same instrument. Sounds weird, doesn't it?

@jan99

Hi

Thanks for clarifying the 'odd' looking location.

. . . . Sounds weird, doesn't it? . . . .

Definitely - does it also do this with other Soundpools?

Are all the pitch files present in the subfolders of the Soundpools which do this?

Did you try logging out of the Store restarting MMM and then log back into the Store?

Hi,

Here are two more problems to consider:

  • About 15 seconds after startup - not from when the program starts to load but from when the dialogue shows up and allows me to load a project and my email address has already shown up, I get the following error. This means that the program is allowing me to load a project before actually completing the log in procedure. I have project settings at 16 tracks by default.

  • Startup screen, Load Project, clicking on Open Project goes to some folder with my name on it and my name is in the search box. Program Settings, Folders, shows: C:\Users\Admin\Documents\MAGIX\Music Maker\Projects; even opening a project from this project folder, saving, closing and reopening MMM, then Open Project goes to the same folder. It should default to the above location. There is no User with my name, so where is MMM getting this from?

Hi

. . . . This means that the program is allowing me to load a project before actually completing the log in procedure . . . .

II have had this happen once and that was when my Interneet connection was very slow due to maintenance by my ISP a few weeks ago - the login took about 1 minute to complete.

Currently in MMM 2021 login is complete as the dialog appears, I also cross checked with MMM 2020 the login was complete before the New/Load project dialog appeared.

Certainly the dialog should be modal and not allow any other interaction until login is complete or if offline the cache (?) has been loaded.

The Open project dialog is defaulting to the root folder of your profile on the PC. IIRC in one of your earlier MMM bugs lists the ignoring of the project folder as set in the program settings has been a long term issue

OT - ignoring the project folder occurs with MEP and VPX where they revert to the demo project and have done for many years.

@johnebaker :about your questions&suggestions (30-07-00.41) on the loading of existing instruments.

  1. does it also do this with other Soundpools? - yes it does - see the three screenhots above. But I still got to find out if there is some 'system in the madness' . I noticed they're all in the same subdirectory ('shop'), so you might be right that it could have something to do with this...The right time for some new experiments😉.
  2. Are all the pitch files present in the subfolders of the Soundpools which do this? They sure are!
  3. Did you try logging out of the Store restarting MMM and then log back into the Store? Not until now, See nr. 1: gonna try it.

I got a very fast reaction from Magix support on my 'status-update'. They also suggest some (experimental?) things to try. I'll share the results!

Tnx for now!

Hi ev'rybody,

it's becoming quite clear that my specific problems with MMaker are closely related to the location were I stored Soundpools, VSTi's etc (the D-disk). MMaker however continues to (re)place files and settings on my C-disk. Whenever I try to change this, MMaker does not agree. This causes file-location complexity to grow and grow...all the more because Samplitude Music Studio uses (partially) the same pools&directories. That probably explains why MMaker (as well as myself) lost track of quite a lot of things. So first challenge is to bring some order in this file-chaos...Maybe even including 'fresh installation'. We'll see what happens.

I've lost confidence in MMM for now, the 2020 version took almost a year to get stable and to fix the auto-save project backup-files and now the lost visuals and unstable behaviour among other things with the 2021 version shouldn't happen with a product you actually are paying for!
