Both Movie Edit Pro MX and Movie Edit 2015 Plus have started acting strangely......

My computer seems to be working fine in all other aspects - no problems with other software. But both of these programs are taking forever to open - usually followed by freezing at some point requiring Task Manager to close. I have uninstalled and reinstalled but no difference. I have a big movie project in progress that needs to be finished in 9 days. Any suggestions will be appreciated. These have been running fine on my Dell Inspiron laptop until the past couple of days.

Hi Gerald,

Given that reinstallation of MEP fails to cure it and other PC applications work OK, then it's difficult to know where best to start. My first few steps (after a PC reboot, of course) would include these:

1. System Restore. In your case, with the problem arising only a couple of days ago, try an initial restore to say three days ago.

2. System File Checker, to ensure all crucial OS files are in place. Here, I enter sfc /scannow in the Run box, but if you're unfamiliar with the tool see http://pcsupport.about.com/od/toolsofthetrade/ht/sfc-scannow.htm

3. Event Viewer. Look for clues under both System and Application, particularly at times coinciding with your latest attempt to run MEP.

4. Defragging. MEP, like all NLEs, is particularly demanding on your PC resouces, including your HDs. I defrag automatically but if you're not sure of the status in your own case then a thorough defrag of both your OS and data HDs might help.

5. If the above (and any other procedures suggested by others or occurring to you) don't solve the problem, repeat the SR, methodically stepping back in time as far as is practicable without making other unwanted changes.

Report back on progress.

A failure of the reinstall is almost guaranteed if the files left behind by the uninstaller are not cleaned up before reinstalling.

After uninstalling any files and folders in the following locations should be deleted:

    c:\Program files\Magix\ affected program

    c:\Program files (x86)\Magix\ affected program

    c:\ProgramData\Magix\ affected program  -  this is a hidden file so you may need to set Windows Explorer to show Hidden files.

'affected program' = version of MEP you are re-installing

These files and folders are not removed installer because they are created after installation is complete and the installer knows nothing about them.

There is a fourth location of files left behind

    c:\Users\Public\Documents\MAGIX\Common

however there is no need to delete these - they do not affect the re-install.

The fact that both MEP versions are affected suggests something else has changed on your laptop:

    - have you upgraded to Windows 10 from 7, 8 or 8.1?  If so see this tutorial

    - installed any other video software or codecs?

John: Good point, a qualification I assumed but should have made.

Gerald: For uninstalling any program I always use Revo Uninstaller, which (optionally, but I consistently enable it) follows the program's own built-in uninstall by deleting all the associated files, folders - and registry entries.

I have downloaded Magix MAGIX Movie Edit Pro 2016 Premium last week and I am having trouble running the program. Anybody out there with same problem? When I double click on the icon, the program starts to open normally but after a few seconds the following message appears on my screen:

* A serious program error occurred. Error in module "null" (Load address: 0xFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF) to address 0x0000000000000000 (Exception 0x00000005 "ACCESS_VIOLATION")*

And I am asked to back up current project. When I press on *Continue Program* I got a second Warning on top of the first:

*Warning: It´s recommended you close the program as it may be in an unstable state at the moment*

I am given no option but to close the program......thank you for your input

Many thanks to those that responded. I spent a long day of uninstalling programs that I decided I could live without (I downloaded Revo Uninstaller for this task); I ran AVG and MalwareBytes; I uninstalled MEP 14 as well as 15; I did a system restore but I could only go back to the previous day; and followed this all up by running ADWCleaner.

Then I reinstalled the MEP 2014 version and was able to navigate through a project I did earlier this summer. I tried to load the project that I'm currently working on but it froze when I went to burn a DVD. So I opened a new project and put in the first few pictures from the current project. I was able to successfully burn a DVD from this new project. So, resigned to the fact that I might have to start from scratch on this project, I decided to download the new 2016 version and give it a try. Miraculously, it loaded my current project and is running smooth as silk. I have added new objects to the project and have burned a test DVD (on a re-writeable disc) a couple of times. So it looks like I'm out of the woods - and my computer overall seems to boot up faster and has been rock-solid stable so far.

 

Now that I'm past that hurdle, I have another question for you guru's:

Is there a way I can make a transition play in reverse?  The particular one I'm interested in doing is the "Scroll" transition found at Fades / Spatial Fades / 3D Morph. I'm using this fade to simulate turning of pages as in a picture album, and at the end I'd like to have it work the opposite direction as I "close" the album.

I'm a former user of Ulead's Movie Studio Pro and there was a simple way to reverse direction on transitions. If anyone can point me to a solution to this I will be most appreciative.

I found a video on YouTube that explained how to play a video clip in reverse (Effects / Video Effects / Speed / click on "Reversed".  So I opened a new project and put the two clips with the transition in it - then exported it as an MPEG-2. Put it into my project and reversed it. Works exactly as I had hoped.

Glad to see that it all works. Don't forget that if a project file goes bad, there is a backup every 10 minutes unless you changed the default.

I couldn't find any way to reverse the scroll transition effect. You can flip the effect horizontally and vertically and both, but it doesn't solve your problem. Maybe someone else has an easy solution.

Pixelan 3D Six Pack has a series of page transitions, and I think that this is what you are looking for. I gave it a 3s transition which seems too long for a good effect.

Video didn't work, tried again.

You can download and try it out. It leaves an X across the screen until you purchase, but you can see what the effects all do.

Hi

Many of the transitions in MEP have a checkbox for "reverse A/B" in the settings area in the fades section of the Media pool, and some have a lot more settings to choose than others. A case in point is the Leaf through fade in the Standard fades group. This is very similar to the Scroll and a lot more flexible.

I presume you were able to reverse the movie / transition because the clips you were using were still or had no action?  

You can also experiment with File > Export Movie > Export as Transition if you want to have the transition available again as a preset.
