Bluray Burner Problems and Multi-Language Bug in VPX16

browj2 wrote on 12/15/2024, 1:32 PM

Hi,

Bluray Burner: ASUS BW-12D1S-U (2013)

I have burned BR disks in the past, from VPX and Movie Studio, but the burner now gives me errors. I tried the direct method from VPX and creating ISO then trying to burn from the ISO using IMGBurn, Cyberlink Power2Go 10, and even the old Magix SpeedBurnR. I then tried just burning a data disk (I have already done about 100 with this burner) using Power2Go. All were unsuccessful, usually at the end of the burn process, can't finalize the disk. However, Power2Go rejected the attempts at data disks on my old (used to be successful) and new computers fairly quickly from the outset.

I have Verbatim BD-R disks and I also tried Verbatim BD-R LTH Type (successful in the past). I doubt that disks from 2 sources are going to be bad, but you never know.

The Bluray ISO files play back correctly in VLC and CyberLink PowerDVD 16. I have 2 movies, each with a few chapters.

On the other hand, the burner has no problem burning to DVD.

Has anyone had similar problems and been able to resolve them? If so, how?

If not, I'll be looking for a new burner and a box of rewriteable BR disks.

Here are some of the error messages:

Trying to burn (2-language version) to Bluray from VPX gives the following error:

The BR disk actually did get some info and opened in CyberLink. However, only the BDMV and Certificate folders were burned.

Any ideas?

SECOND PROBLEM - OLD BUG

@johnebaker

In VPX, has the multiple languages bug been resolved or is it just me? I can't get more than 2 languages to be accepted by the Burn process. With 3 languages, it starts and gives me a message:

Hi John.

As far as I understand it, to write to a Blu-ray disc requires a much narrower and more powerful beam than for it's other burn or playback functions although playback still benefits from a narrower beam. I had two Sony Blu-ray burners that gave up being able to burn Blu-ray discs after a relatively short time before I gave up on the medium entirely. The lasers seemed to just reduce in power over time and like your problem would still burn DVD and CD discs.

Most of my friends and family don't even have CD p[layers any more let alone Blu-ray players when there are better quality streaming services out there. Even our Tivo box gives a better output than our Blu-ray player.

If I want to send a video to someone now physically I send an SD card by post in a letter. Make it look like there is a greetings card inside for less chance of getting the envelope bent during postage. I do that if they are not tech savvy enough to download a video from Google drive, like my younger sister. How she messes that up is beyond me.

Ray.

Hi Ray,

Thanks for the info. As I feared, I'll need a new burner.

As for delivery methods, the disks in nice cases rarely get lost...and probably rarely viewed. But, I like the menus and everything.

One of us should start off a thread on delivery methods, as was discussed in some of the other threads, in particular, the one started by Jak Willis. I have a Magix album account that family members forget about, myself included.

Hi John EB,

Thanks for taking a look and confirming.

Hi John.

Don't get me wrong, we have two working Blu-ray players left in the house connected to the lounge and kitchen TVs as well as two CD players in other rooms but seriously can't remember the last time anything was put into any of them. At least I think they still work.

The last video I did for family was my younger sister's wedding that I put onto YouTube marked private and got her and other interested third parties the link. I used to make CDs or music or podcasts for the car for long journeys but our cars no longer have CD players instead connecting directly to our phones and we can play anything from those or off the car's DAB radio. My massive CD, Mini Disc, record and tape collection now resides on hard drives and what original media remain playable are my hard copy backups. The sad truth is I have no-one to share such discs with.

My Pioneer Bluray burner with Ritek BDs is going fine here, John, not that I do a lot of them. Burn 'em up, Baby!

All my forum comments are based on or refer to my System 1.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

Hi John

. . . .  I'll need a new burner . . . .

May be, may be not, check if there is a firmware update for the burner, it may not have the necessary burn parameters for the discs and is using a default power setting which may be too low.

Hi Al.

You made me look up Ritek who I had never heard of. Impressive.

The problem for me would be the cost and amount of discs plus space needed to archive all my data. That and the hope that the industry keeps making usable Blu-ray burners or players for computers in the future. Not that any of that matters once I've gone. I doubt anyone other than myself is interested in more than a small percentage of it and will eventually end up in landfill or recycled.

@johnebaker

Hi John.

That is a good point and one I did try for my Sony drives which alas did not have any. I even took one unit apart to clean the laser diode and tried a new batch of discs. I currently only have a DVD burner in my system. it's an old one but it still works.

Hi John EB,

The ASUS burner has its own power supply, connected to the mains. For USB, I have tried through a hub, directly connected to ports on two computers, always with the same result.

There is a firmware update available for the 2016 onward models, not for my 2013. Driver is up to date, according to my system.

I have never been comfortable with this machine. It seems that some people who received DVD's from the ASUS had trouble reading the disks. I have an old DVD burner that gave me better results from the get-go - no complaints about not being able to read the disks.

So, I'm looking at not too expensive, but with good reviews. Amazon Choice - Dainty - External Compatible Blu ray Drive Player Read/Write Portable 7in1 External Compatible Blu ray Burner, Compatible with USB 3.0 and Type-C DVD DVD BD with Win7-11/Mac OS. The drawback is the short cable that doesn't suit my setup.

Or perhaps a Verbatim compatible with BDXL discs – capacities up to 100GB. Then I would need to buy those and they probably won't play back on anyone's machine, like mine.

@CubeAce

Hi Ray,

But, it's our legacy for future generations!

I have been looking for a particular photo of my father on the floor in front of the Christmas tree. I'm sure it's there somewhere, if not just in my imagination.

Hence, the suggestion for a thread to discuss delivery ideas and, in particular, for preserving family (and friends') heritage.

Hi John.

The sad truth is when both of my parents passed away, I was the only one interested in their limited photos and other personal records. I have many more images plus now videos of which few are really personal or a record of myself other than how I pass my time away. Using the internet is not a guarantee. YouTube accounts that do not have an upload within a two year period are normally removed. Same with Flickr unless it is a paid account and kept going. Once I'm gone it is possible my email addresses will no longer work if care isn't taken on obtaining them for transfer if needed. I sometimes get enquires from cousins who ask if I have any images of their relatives and more rarely of my parents.

I have since found further images of my father at work from the internet and donated some of my images to that site of my father working in that industry as that seems to have better chance of surviving me. It's also why I do so much photography work for charitable trusts who will have my data for possibly a very long time as keeping any records are kept as a part of their charters and for future research and historical records.

For images I feel are important I try to print stills of have them printed. Not too many as storage becomes a problem for those finding a place to live, and "affordable" in this country often means a small dwelling with less free space. I know my son's place that he can only afford to rent rather than buy is just slightly larger than our ground floor but we basically live in a four story building. There is also no absolute guarantee we would be able to pass the house onto him either. That depends on how long we live and our income. If my son didn't feel keeping anything I made media wise a priority I would not blame him.

We all have different expectations and possibilities of outcome but no prior knowledge of what will be.

The best made plans of mice and men and all that 😂.

Expletive comes to mind.

Al's suggestion is one I too would recommend, along with LG, for BD I have an LG Lightscribe from 2010 and still going strong, and a Verbatim slimline USB3 for my laptop.

Added:

I have tested the BD burn with multiple audio tracks again ensuring the resultant file size is greater than that indicated in the log file section I posted above.

Still crashes, will send a Support request.
