Black screen in video

Keith-Paterson wrote on 1/7/2024, 2:48 PM

I upload a clip to the software and i can see, play & edit the clip but after a couple of time of playing it decides to go all black on the play back screen. i can hear the video play back but no picture! I try and load it back up but then get the same result. So then reload the whole software and start again but find i go through the same routine!

Hello Keith, could you advise the following:

-Exact name and version of the software

-Details of our computer; CPU, GPU.

We're fellow users (no Magix staff here) but should be able to help you out.

All my forum comments are based on or refer to my System 1.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

Hi and welcome to the user to user forums.

What happens if you change the program settings in the devices section so that the Import, Processing and Export, drop-down boxes are all changed to CPU? Playback may be stuttery but do you lose the image?

Ray.

@AAProds @CubeAce I have a similar problem. I am have been using Magix 17.0.1.128 for years but when I am editing and exporting videos longer than about 40 minutes the screen goes black. This happens both while editing and also exporting. I run MEP on two separate/different computers and it happens on both computers so I'm assuming it's some setting unrelated to the computer. Usually, while editing the screen is fine but after a while, an hour or so, the screen goes black, I have to save and then restart to resume editing. I have attached screenshots to show examples. the background and images remain, it's just the video that goes black. When editing the screen goes black for ALL video clips but when exporting it only goes black after about 40 minutes. Video files recorded with iphone, see info below. Please let me know if you have any suggestions.

I ran the mediainfo program and here are the results:

@friendflyer Hi, that is a MOV HEVC file. iPhone introduced it not too long ago & it caused a bit of trouble.

For me in general .MOV often don't work too well, some .MOV formats don't work at all in Magix Movie Studio 2025,

HEVC is a fairly new format & if you're using Magix 17.0.1.128, what version is that, is it an older program? It prob hasn't had the update to handle HEVC.

There's been a couple of posts on here reg MOV HEVC, I just had quick look but the posts get a bit long winded & sidetracked off topic, also I think the difference between Windows 10 & Windows 11 can play a part.. You'll have to do a search & see what you can find.

Check your GPU drivers.

Download Quicktime inc the player if you haven't already got it installed, discussions say 'it's not needed anymore' & 'I downloaded it, now it works', so whether it will help who knows 🤷‍♂️🤦‍♂️😂 Ignore any rumors of it not being safe, those rumours are about online sharing type stuff through Quicktime, install it, open it if you wish but don't sign in to anything, don't fill in any online stuff or activate any links etc in the settings, close it & ignore it.

Quicktime - https://support.apple.com/en-gb/106375

There's a Microsoft HEVC codec, again this is one of those things that 'isn't need' but it might help https://apps.microsoft.com/detail/9nmzlz57r3t7?hl=en-GB&gl=GB

If you want you can share your file on a file sharing site like Google Drive & we'll test it out, if it's ok for us then maybe we can fathom why it doesn't for you.

I don't know much about iPhones, if there's a HDR setting that might make your phone create MP4 AVC, that is/was well used & very compatible format which all software can use.

@friendflyer 👍

I mainly use a different editor & I think a lot of the people on here that use Magix don't either use iPhones or they don't experience MOV HEVC, so if you could upload a file to Google Drive for us to try it would be helpful for future testing, a few minutes of something... 👍

PS, if you do install anything, do it one at a time & test Magix, that way you know what fixed it or made no difference at all, & if worse comes to the worst you know what messed up your PC 😖😂👍

@friendflyer

That fact that the file opens but goes awry after an hour IMO points to a program issue (inability to handle the complex HEVC codec with the temp files/RAM clogging up) or a computer/memory type issue. For example, many moons ago, Magix could not handle more than ~200 DV-AVIs at once. I don't know whether that was my computer resources or the program, but now I have no issues at all. Programs do get better (as do computers).

I'll second Gid's suggestion: set your phone to record in H264/AVC, not HEVC. HEVC only exists to squeeze more video into less disk space and is not a desirable format to edit.

If worst comes to worst, convert your HEVCs to H264/AVC with Handbrake; they should then import and edit OK.

All my forum comments are based on or refer to my System 1.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. @friendflyer @AAProds @Gid

I think that @johnebaker in the past has mentioned that there was / could still be a frame limit that can kick in around the two hour mark depending on the frame rate but Al (AAProds) also brings up one relevant factor and that could be the amount of free space on your C:/ drive to be able to cope with the huge temp files created during running the program. Another thing that may have an influence is Win 10 uses Direct X 12.1 and I think your program can't use that version but will be using one of the cut down earlier versions within Direct X 12.1 which have had a few changes to the way they work, specifically with rendering 2D graphics.

In the past when the program was coping were you using Windows 10?

Ray.

@friendflyer

Hi

Please do not duplicate post on the same issue, I have closed the other topic where you posted the same info.

Movie Edit Pro 2018 v 17.0.1.128  - from your last post you had upgraded to Movie Studio 2023 via 2020, have you reverted back to MEP 2018?

If so:

MEP 2018 is missing at least 9 updates, the last version was 17.0.3.184.

Computer 1:

MEP 2018 cannot use the RTX 3060, it does not support NVENC, change the Video mode, GPU setting to use the UHD 750 and ensure it is running the latest driver 32.0.101.6651

Computer 2:

Ensure the GPU setting in MEP 2018 is set to the UHD GPU and the graphics driver is up to date - the driver for Computer 1 is also for the N95 iGPU.

Do note that this mini PC may suffer from throttling of the CPU/iGPU, HEVC video puts a higher load on the CPU/iGPU and giving rise to higher CPU/iGPU temperatures

iPhone video:

From the Mediainfo, the video looks like standard HEVC/AAC, is the last version of QuickTime for Windows v7.7.9 installed?

The iPhone should be able to record h.264/AVC - it may be useful to do a test recording made under the same conditions as the HEVC recording and edited/exported from MEP to see if this also causes the same issue.

Added:  I see this has also been recommended by @Gid, @AAProds and @CubeAce.

Given the computer specs, have you tried Movie Studio 2023 which supports NVENC on computer 1 and can take full advantage of the RTX 3060. Qucktime should also not necessary with MMS 2023.

HTH

This happens both while editing and also exporting. I run MEP on two separate/different computers and it happens on both computers so I'm assuming it's some setting unrelated to the computer. Usually, while editing the screen is fine but after a while, an hour or so, the screen goes black, I have to save and then restart to resume editing. I have attached screenshots to show examples. the background and images remain, it's just the video that goes black. When editing the screen goes black for ALL video clips but when exporting it only goes black after about 40 minutes.

@friendflyer  Hi, I agree with @AAProds & other's comment (quote below) , I read your comment but neglected to mention it in my comments thinking that a codec or something might make MEP or your PC handle the video differently. You have two pics above, one goes black at 7mins the other goes black at 43mins, & you have two PC's, one with 16GB & the other with 128GB RAM, that makes sense, I got caught up with the 'goes black after about 40 minutes' thinking it was mostly a file issue without checking each pic & your PC's specs.🤷‍♂️ -

That fact that the file opens but goes awry after an hour IMO points to a program issue (inability to handle the complex HEVC codec with the temp files/RAM clogging up) or a computer/memory type issue

My suggestions would prob help make the video either play or not play at all, but as it does play it's prob choking the PC in some way.

Open Taskmanager, run the video again & see what happens to your drives &/or RAM..
