Re your part of the question about audio sample rate: 44.1 kHz is unusual for video, 48 kHz is rather more common! This may be why MEPP is, apparently, converting the sample rate.

I agree with Jeff about uploading the images. Not doing so may reduce the amount of time it takes for anyone to answer if they can't be bothered clicking on links to unknown web pages. It may eventually result in people ignoring your requests for help.

I'm asking for the data on the clip or clips you used because I can't replicate the problem.

I can export to any frame rate, sampling rate, or screen size I wish without triggering the codec warning dialogues you seem to be producing. So I'm expecting something not quite correct in the extended exif data and producing the external codec error you are seeing.

No it's not. That is the Windows info and is nowhere near complete.

You need to use.

MediaInfo A free to use tool, and use the text view to copy and paste back here. You may need to read the instructions on the site to see how to use it.

Is an old MP-4 codec before the codec was standardized and is probably no longer a supported codec as I found similar inquiries in other video editing forums from 2019 onwards.

I suggest converting the clip or any other affected clips to a standardized MP-4 codec using HandBrake and then use those files for editing in MEP.

I am a bit unclear on how much this really matters from a project settings perspective. Am I over thinking this?
The bit rate of the audio on some video clips? Is it okay to import some clips at 44k and some at 48k ? Is it okay to import some clips at 128kbps and some at 192kbps? Is it okay to importing 1080 clips with 720 clips in same project?

It doesn't help as whenever you edit there is always some loss of quality if you have to export to 'lossy' codec such as MP4 or HEVC as the video gets re-compressed each time it is generationally re-edited. (IE. the edited copy is then at a later date re-edited). Considering your clip has a Google ident attached to it, it is probably not an original clip to start with.

In practical terms, as long as the export has a higher bit-rate set than any of the original clips the picture quality should not suffer much, but differing frame rates between clips may make some portions of the video look odd movement wise.(blurring or multiple overlay 'ghost' type imaging) Ideally all clips would be identical but with more historical footage this is not always possible. Normally the person editing the footage is more likely to spot the imperfections than anyone else who will watch it.

Audio wise could be more of a mixed bag of results as the sampling rate is really the 'clock' of the audio. You may get away with no ill effects but it is not guaranteed. Side effects could, but may not include, sounds like clipping or clicks, a slowing and pitch change, or a possible loss of audio synchronization. A lot depends on how well the decoding process goes during export. The audio bit rate is the 'quality setting' and again as long at it at least equals or exceeds the original clips bit rates there will be less degradation of the signal.

That unsupported codec though needs re-encoding to work if you want to retain the 44.1kHz sample rate. There may or may not be other side effects if you don't convert an unsupported codec. I don't know for certain though as I have never come across that codec before.

A couple of points, if I may:

The MP42 should be no problem for MEP, and it seems to be opening the file OK (because you can get to the Export screen). I've just downloaded a couple of MP42s (with AVI extension) and the video imports into MEP with no issues.

You should be exporting to MPEG-4. You are currently exporting to MPEG 2, which will require a larger file size than it's MP4 equivalent for the same quality. That may be the cause of the codec error message.

With the MPEG-4 export, on the Advanced screen, set the video bitrate to around 3000kbps. That should give you a file of around 3gb for the two hours and not lose a lot of quality (the ~1000kbps of the original is pretty low anyway).

Ignore the framerate error message and click "Continue". The framerates are essentially the same (23.98 is 23.976 rounded).

I would have thought, on the Export Advanced screen, you just change the audio sample rate to 48khz and the bit rate to 160 and off you go.

If you got that file off the web, can we have the link so we can play with it.

I had suggested those changes earlier and they did not work according to VideoPro.

MEP has left a lot of information regarding video codec compatibility out of their info specs page. VPX has not and appears as far as I have been able to ascertain to generally apply to MEP as well.

I don't have time this weekend to watch the video I'm afraid. I'm up early to do a two day shoot for one of my sponsors and I'll be busy editing in the evenings over the next few days or possibly the week to send to them.

I use all my own material in my videos and have no experience on ripping to offer advice.

I've downloaded both the Full HD version (2.5gb, 1920x1080) and the HD version ( 670mb, 280x720) direct from YT in MP4 format and MEP opens both without issue. The MP42 version you have is not from YT directly.

I see that it is an interview, so IMO there's no need for the FHD version, just grab the 720P version.

I use 4k Videodownloader. This will give you a Zip file that you can unzip, then run the EXE file. It's a standalone version so will not install on your computer (and potentially clog it up).

Copy the YT link to your clipboard, then open 4k up, and choose MP4 downloads. You'll see the different quality files. Choose the 720P version (around 670mb) then browse to a suitable download folder, then set it in motion.

There is a slightly annoying ticking noise coming through the audio when playing in MEP. I don't know what that's about.

MEP will export with no issues using MPEG-4 and 48k audio. 128kbps audio is fine for voice.

What editing do you want to do it? MEP may not be the best program, because it always re-encodes. If you're just doing simple cuts and deletes, Avidemux is what you want. Lossless re-encode and super fast.

Is that because when you start the project, if you select 44k, it will not let you change it? The reason I ask, is because I already made some edits on the 44k movie project. I deleted the track from the time line, and imported the 48k

Yes, slightly.

People have had very little success getting to smart render or smart copy with MEP, up to 2021, to smart-render out an MPEG-4 (I don't know about MEP 2022). However, given the fairly static nature of that video, provided you use a video bitrate of around 3000, the quality will be quite OK.

However, there has been discussion about smart rendering and copying, and John EB got SC to work work, as per this post. By all means try ticking the Smart Copy box on the Export MPEG-4 >Advanced screen.

@VideoPro Differing framerates might create an issue with audio sync. Try it with a couple of files first. MEP with throw up a warning about changing the framerate when you bring in a file that's different to the Movie Settings FR. Try a quick export and see if the audio sync is affected.

In any case, even if you convert outside MEP, you'll get inserted/duplicated frames or removed frames to match the new framerate so I'd just let MEP do it.

If you bring differing resolutions in, you'll need to crop/section them to match your movie settings eg with a 16:9 movie setting, if you bring in a 4:3 file, you'll need to crop it unless you're happy with black side bars for that clip.

The differing bitrate is not an issue. MEP will export all your clips at the bitrate set by you during export (unless you're lucky enough to get Smart Copying).

Why would you need that? What happens if you just say no? Obviously, the imported file takes on the project settings.

There is. Just click "Do Not Adjust".
