Best way to save my .mts file (1080p with DD 5.1 sound) to DVD-disk with retained 5.1 audio

muffh wrote on 6/20/2013, 3:39 AM

hello. i´m a newbee to this softw (Movie Edit Pro MX 18PLUS). so i have a lot of Q,s. but for now one in particular.

i have files in .mts format from a panasonic Full HD cam with DD 5.1 audio.

what i want to do is to save the video to DVD-disk with the DD 5.1 audio intact and of cource relativ high resolution video. i don´t have BD burner, only a regular DVD-burner.

when i import the mts files the program starts "downmixing", is the 5.1 audio lost in this state??

what format should i use to convert mts to a easíer format to use and still have the 5.1 audio?

What is the best way of working in this case??

I think, having checked that MEP MX Premium, which is what I have, can handle 5.1 audio, the question is whether your computer has a suitable 5.1 sound card installed?  The card needs to be able to handle 5 discrete channels, I believe, not as some allegedly multi-channel cards do which depend upon some kind of "matrixed" 5.1. input.

Without such a card MEP or any other editor can never "play" your audio as it was recorded.  Hence MEP will start to downmix your audio from 5.1 to stereo.

In answer to your question about "relative high resolution video" on your DVD; you need to remember that video on a DVD is only ever SD (Standard Definition), not HD.  This is a "limitation" of the DVD format.  If you really want HD output you will need  to burn an AVCHD DVD (limited to a maximum of 30 minutes, perhaps less with full 5.1 audio and playable only on a BD player) or to use a BD burner (which I notice you say you don't have) to burn a BD disc.

thanks "emmrecs" for the answer.

So if i don´t have a 5.1 sound card, i can never get the DD 5.1 audio trough to a disk in anyway, or??

Is the 5.1 signal "destroyd" with the downmixing?? or could i somehow be able to export it?

you said that with a AVCHD DVD (limited to a maximum of 30 minutes) i could get 5.1??

but what if i burn it to an DVD with dubble Layer 8,5GB then perhaps i could get the 45minutes of video to the same disk with 5.1?? to read with my BD player

or is my problem that i dont have the correct soundcard, thats why i never can get the 5.1 audio through to a disk??

ooh! many thoughts about this. perhaps i´need to upgrade my hardware :-)

Hi

For a standard DVD to have surround sound you must select the options as shown in the image

Tha AC3 audio format supports 5.1 surround sound.

For BD on DVD disc - subjected to the 30 min limit (single layer DVD) this option

And for AVCHD on DVD disc

Check the sound card that is installed on your computer - if it is a Realtek HDA or Intel HDA card then you have a surround sound card already  alternatively check the number of sockets on the back of your computer - they should look something like this for a surround sound audio card.

Note - you may have only 5 audio sockets not 6 as in the image.

It is not necessary to have a surround sound card for producing DVD's with surround sound on them -

re Jeff's comment . . . . Without such a card MEP or any other editor can never "play" your audio as it was recorded. Hence MEP will start to downmix your audio from 5.1 to stereo. . . . .

This only applies to playback on your computer, either in MEP or any software player, if you do not have a surround sound audio card or if you have a surround card but only one pair of speakers plugged into the green audio socket then the sound is played in stereo only.

Sorry John.  I have to disagree!

My own computer has a pretty good quality stereo PCI soundcard from EMU.  MEP/VPX settings screen has this card as the audio "Output Device" and, presumably as a result of that, I do not have any of the 5.1 options available that you show in your screenshots of the DVD burn screen.

I'm afraid it IS the case that, without a suitable surround card (or external interface) in or attached to your computer, any multichannel audio editing or burning to DVD is NOT possible.

Hi Jeff

. . . . Sorry John.  I have to disagree! . . .

Apologies - you are correct - I thought my Sony laptop had a stereo card only to find out it is a Realtek HDA which has the rear and centre channel outputs deactivated yet they must work internally

Cheers

John
