Best way to export movies to Instagram

sami-y wrote on 10/4/2018, 5:47 AM

Hello!

I'm fairly new to video editing and having a big time trouble to edit videos that I can upload to Instagram. What would be the easiest way to do this?

@sami-y

Hi

I would advise you to consult the Instagram website for their video format, framerate, codec format, maximum file length/size.

Ok, so these are the technical specifications:

mp4 format:

H.264 Codec

AAC Audio

3 500 kbps bitrate for video

Frame rate of 30 fps (frames per second)

Maximum file size of 15 mb

Video must be a maximum of 60 seconds

Maximum video width is 1080 px (pixels) wide

I'm having problems on keeping the file size so small and finding the correct aspect ratio (4:5) and dimensions ( 864 width, 1080 height) to start with.

Is there some kind of tutorial to make these changes for the export format?

Hi,

Facebook or Instagram need or prefer portait mode photo and video that is maximum 1080 pixels width, format 9:16 that is 1080 x 1920 px. Vertical vidéo or square video (1080 x 1080 px) I can give info to create from Magix square video. ( 960 x 960 px )

Regards,

YR

yvon-robert, sounds like you know what you're talking about and I hope that you can help me. Whenever I try to export using your suggested settings for vertical I get the error "This resolution is not supported". That's after I type into the resolution box on export. I am also unable to change the aspect ratio on export. It is grayed out and cannot change from 16:9. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! I attached an image of the error screen.

@newmexd

Hi

Try changing the project settings to those shown below - when you come to export as MP4 the correct Aspect Ratio setting should be automatically selected.

Thanks John! But that still leaves aspect ratio at 16:9 and Instagram requires a different ratio. I figured out a hack by playing with the size of video inside of 16:9 so that when uploaded to Instagram and it does it's automatic crop, my video sits perfectly. However, Instagram doesn't recognize Magix codec m2ts and I have to run the video through Handbrake to get H.264. I am using Pro. Does Premium have the option for exporting as H.264?

Thanks

Yes. Look under help in MEPs taskbar. I would give further help but I'm currently transcoding a file for the next 2 hours and can't access MEP at present.

Hi

. . . . still leaves aspect ratio at 16:9 and Instagram requires a different ratio . . .

Apologies - I uploaded the wrong screen shot - the screen shot I posted shows the AR as 16:9 - change the AR setting to 9:16 AR as shown below

Edit: Correct image uploaded for previous comment.

If you have not found them, Instagrams settings are here - note there are many other sites which give different settings which are incorrect, however they do work.

@johnebaker I was able to export at 1:1 after downloading the MP4 codec. Before that, I was unable to adjust ratio on export for some reason.. However, on export, I am still unable to select 9:16. The movie is set up at 9:16 but when I adjust on export, it reverts to 16:9.

@CubeAce any suggestions? I searched the help forum but the only posted answer (video) has no longer available...

@newmexd

Hi. As far as I'm aware you can't export in 9:16 in MEP but I could be wrong. In my export boxes on any codec the width is always displayed as being larger than the height. I can't find any that are the other way around, sorry.

One way around this may be to turn your current project around by 90 degrees and export it sideways as it were (If Mep can handle any trasitions etc. like that) and then use something like VSDC free Video Editor to turn it back 90 degrees for export which VSDC should do. Or maybe VSDC may allow you to export a video out at that resolution and clip off the edges. I confess I've never tried it but it can do it the other way around.

I used do the opposite. Use 9:16 footage and turn it in VSDC to import into MEP until I figured out I could actually do that at least in MEP.

Sorry if this is not much use to you but it's the best I can think of.

I am going to lock this topic - responses to @newmexd issue are now being split over 2 topics which is not helpful - please use this topic for discussing the issue.

@CubeAce - I have put up a tutorial on how to do this - the link to it is in the topic linked to above.
