Barrel distortion of images on DVD (MEP16)

Spirivid wrote on 3/30/2012, 9:58 AM

A quick question:

I have just created a DVD comprising a large number of still images and some movie clips, and have noticed that when I play back the DVD via my DVD player and television screen, many of the stills are suffering from barrel distortion (the left and right edges of the picture are curved inwards as they meet the top edge of the image). This is of course most noticeable on images which do not occupy the whole screen area.

I am wondering if the way to deal with this is to experiment with the "3D distortion" effect and then to crop the picture slightly to remove the rough edges that result, but does anybody know of a better way?

My DVD contains some 80 still images of differing sizes, and I'd be keen not to have to fiddle with each one individually (I now have only 24 hours before I have to hand the presentation over for showing, so time is short). I know I can save video effects and apply them to other scenes in my movie, but I'd really like to know if there is an automated correction for this kind of distortion.

I'm using MEP16+. Thanks in advance.

Jeremy.

Hi

Select the first image clip

Use Effects, Movement and Size, Section to crop out the ditortion, ensure that the Fill screen check box is ticked.

Right click the clip just cropped and select Video Effects, Copy video effects.

If you have other effects applied then in the dialog ensure you only have the Section one checked.

Select all the other clips

Right clip one of the selected clips and select Video efects, Insert  video effects

Apply to all selected objects.

Job done!!

John

Thanks very much, John! It turns out that the problem I've been having only occurs on CRT TV screens and not when I play the DVD back on my PC and flat-screen LCD monitor, but these tips are going to be really helpful (particularly the "Fill screen" bit, which should help to reduce the appearance of the distortion).

Thank you once again for your help!

Jeremy.
