BAK File - Advice Please

Whalebat wrote on 12/9/2012, 5:18 AM

Can anyone explain, to what extent is this file a backup.

Is i a full backup in it's own right

or

Does it only link the various objects that are located on the computer.

The reason I ask - The BAK File Is Very Small In Size

If it's a full self contained compressed backup then I'd archive projects with this file rather than backingup all objects to a separate folder as I have been.

Hi,

The back up files created by MEP do not contain any of your source data.  They are basically a backup of your project files.  Your project files simply act as pointers to your source data and what specific edits have been performed on the source data.  So, if you move a source file, neither the project file or the backup file will be able to locate the new file location unless you point to it manually.

Do not uses these files as a way to back up your masters, instead use a proper backup application and a seperate storage device to back up your masters.

Hello George

Thanks for the reply and confirming my thoughts regarding teh BAK File.

I currently back up projects as in the image below which puts everything in a project into a folder of it's own.

Being video thes folders can take up quite a space.  I was being hopeful that I'd missed some amazing cmpression feature !

Thanks again for the response.

Hi,

Thanks for updating me.  I actually have 3 hard drives that I use for backup in addition to the one on my pc.  Drive 1 (2 TB) backs up all media files every 5 minutes if the computer is idle), Drive 2 (1 TB for incremental media back up once a week), Drive 3 (1 TB for full system back up once a month which should be more often).  Disc is cheap and your media files cannot be replaced if lost.  You can always re-purchase any applications lost or even the operating system but once the media files are gone, you cannot get them back.

Just my opinion.

Hello George

I'd agree with that two or more Duplicate Data Backups no mater how you back up.

Thanks for sharing your opinions.
