BAD QUALITY VIDEO when exporting

Poor quality when exporting video to PC. all settings match the settings of my footage but I tried everything and it just gives me poor quality. Cannot even watch it that is how bad it is.

I made a lot of videos before and no problem but now I just get poor quality. Program keeps on asking me to renew updates for 2021 and I am not sure if the quality is bad because I am not choosing to renew subscription option. Please help because I am falling behind with my editing.

Welcome to the Magix user to user forums.

First, please read this post and post back with all the details requested there, including exactly which version and variant of MEP you have, you can check the build number under Help>About.

Then, tell us a lot more about the format of the files you are importing, the Text view of the free MediaInfo will give us the details we need, along with a screenshot of your Export settings.

Also, please try to describe rather more precisely what you mean when you write poor quality when exporting.

The lapse of the Update Service has nothing to do with the poor export quality.

Once your Update Service subscription ends you get no new features, effects etc, the program stays as it is - fully functional, however if you have to re-install the program will revert to the version you purchased.

What video bitrate are you using for your export? To "match", you'd have to choose the same bitrate as the source files. We need that Mediainfo data on your source files to help you.

As an initial start point, for a decent display on a computer of any pixel-size/resolution video, you'll need to export at at least 2000kbps.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

This is the type of quality I am getting. My previous footage did not do this at all. When playing back in Magix the quality is perfect.

Hi

The blocking you are seeing in the images is due to the export bitrate setting being too low.

From your images you are exporting at 6000 kbps which is less than 1/5th of the data rate of your source videos which are 34810 kbps.

Is there a reason why you are exporting at such a low bitrate?

As you appear to be exporting 2.7K video the bitrate needs to be higher at 22000 minimum, 28 - 30000 preferred.
 

@AAProds - you'll need to export at at least 2000kbps - did you mean 20000kbps?

Thanks you for the update. I also realized it but for some unknown reason I cannot change it to anything else that what I sent in my snapshot. How do I change it? and does it not change automatically select the correct bitrate when you import your footage? Please explain to me how I can manually change it to a higher bitrate?

To change the Bitrate settings change the values in the boxes indicated below:

I would suggest the following settings:

Average bitrate: 32000

Maximum bitrate: 40000

Marius, if MEP 2021 is like 2020, you have to set the Maximum Bitrate first; MEP will not allow you to set a Average bitrate that is higher than the currently displayed Maximum bitrate.

As you are finding, bitrate is directly proportional to quality and, of course, is a compromise depending on the target screen size. You can also set the Coding Quality to "Best" to help.

John, yes, it was a bit presumptuous of me to arbitrarily suggest a bitrate. I use 2k/4k all the time for SD movies I have ripped from the TV.

While I was experimenting with bitrates and exports, I came across this. I don't have one of Marius' clips with the trees, but I have noticed a similar effect during transitions/fades.

Here's what I found:

Apart from the obvious sky detail, the fence is worse as well using the default codec.

Hi Alwyn.

To my eye the default codec has better dynamic range so exposing and showing compression differences. Look at the shadow areas within the trees. That may point to needing to increase the bit rate of the MP4 file to allow for smoother transitions although if the dynamic range isn't in the original it's going to look even worse.

My experiments led me to trying the HEVC; at 1500kbps Av and Max (the lowest bitrate I tried for testing), it killed all the other codecs for image quality, especially during the transitions. Only problem was it encoded 1920x1080 at around 3FPS. 😂

It does even for identical resolution/framerate exports HEVC files are significantly smaller and the Average bitrates substantially lower, about 1/3 to 1/2 that of h.264.

However it ideally needs a GPU that can encode HEVC to get decent export frame rates.

I can see that I am being dragged, kicking and screaming, into Ray's world of the rocket machine. I must admit it would be nice to encode in seconds rather that minutes or hours! 😂

I've since put a couple of spikes on the centreline to prevent a repeat that particular mode of attack! 😀

Hi Alwyn.

I am not by any stretch of the imagination a high power user. I have in my life had a total of five computers starting with a Tandy 1000 RLX which was primarily bought to allow my son to do computer stuff to keep up with his school studies. That ran Dos 6.1 if I remember correctly under the guise of Windows 3.1. That was then eventually redundant as Windows developed and I bought an Athlon powered MESH built Tower with a Sony SVGA monitor which lasted throughout the Windows 98 period. At which point I had learned enough to start building my own and the three subsequent builds often meant just swapping out components as needed.

What I try to do with each upgrade is get the best I can afford at the time so as to not have to buy the same bit again in a hurry. Each upgrade in the past has been because of a need rather than a want, so an upgrade would happen when something else I had bought could not be supported by my then current system.

My main surprise is that the actual cost of upgrading on the whole has actually gone down by a lot compared to the increase in performance. The exception at present seems to be solid state M.2 and Nvme drives. But the total cost of parts for my current machine does not cost more than I paid for my MESH machine realising I have reused hard drives, DVD player recorder, Fans, Tower case, and at that time, power supply and graphics card. In fact I only swapped out my motherboard, CPU and ram which was cheaper to buy as a prebuild than the cost of individual components by about £100.

When I think back to that first Tandy machine with its floppy drive and 20MB hard drive and my son thought Prince of Persia was the coolest thing and compare it to what my seven year old grandson is playing with now, well.....😉

I don't know if that seems extravagant or not but I have had far more cars in the same period than computers.
