AVi Video Clip - End of Clip Chopped Off On Insertion / Drag and Drop To The Arranger In Edit Mode - Advice

Whalebat wrote on 8/5/2011, 1:36 PM

I have recorded several small movies on my Pentax X90.

On Insertion (importing) / Drag and Drop To The Arranger In Edit Mode  the last minute of AVI Clips are chopped off if played in the arranger.... the end is missing... audio and video.

If I play the AVI in VLC Media Player..... it plays back in full!

This has happened before, my workaround then was to do a screen recording of my clip.

This time I thought I'd seek a solution.

Please advise what I might be overlooking.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Whalebat

First thing we need to know is what codec is inside the AVI file.  Use GSpot or MediaInfo to analyse a clip and determine the codecs inside.

Perhaps try the old trick of deselecting "Internal AVI Import" in the "Program settings > System Tab > Import format.

Hello Peter

Thanks for your reply.

I tried Deselecting "Internal AVI Import" but still hae the same problem.

The last  minute or so of  an AVI is chopped short.

Can you explain you thinking behind deselecting to resolve the issue?

Any other suggestion would be appreciated.

Dermot

Thanks In Advance

Hi Wahalebat

Go back to GSpot or MediaInfo and check whether the file length - time wise - being detected/specified is the same as what you get in MEP.

I have a feeling that the two may be different in which case you need to get the mpg out of the avi container with a converter - try this anyway.

Hi Whalebat,

I had this problem with M-JPEGs back in 2009 in MEP15. I found an old AVi file from that time which still exhibits that same behaviour in MEP17. This is how I fixed it.

In Program Settings > System > Import Formats scroll down the drop-down list to near the bottom and uncheck
AVI Import Module

Hi Terry,

I had Whalebat's problem with a bunch of WMV files. Following your advice I tried unchecking the "WMV import module". In this case I just get a message that my wmv file cannot be imported at all. Luckily it is not a problem as I have those movies in MOV format as well. The mov files are being imported fine.

Let's wait and see what Whalebat comes back with...

Hello Terry

Sorry I did not get back to you sooner.

I just tried your suggestion... thanks.

I forgot to mention I am using ME Pro 16 Plus.

It does not seem to have an option AVI Import Module.

I tried unchecking " Internal AVI Import"

But it's just the same.

There's a DV AVI Import Module option... that didn't help either.

Thanks Again.

Hi Whalebat,

Sorry it didn't work.

1. Just to eliminate it, try deselecting all the Import modules. Then experiment with restoring the ones I've underlined here:

2. But I think it's much more likely to be something to do with your MJPEG codec, if you have one. Do you see something like this when you open the files with GSpot, and click '1'  as shown?

3. Do you have the Morgan MJPEG Coder installed? I do, and my Canon MJPEGs work OK in MEP16+.

4. If not, download the 60 day trial version here:

http://www.morgan-multimedia.com/technicalsV3.htm

5. If that fails then you might have to resort to conversion, although that's naturally a bit of a PITA.

SUPER is good, although as a starter you might try VirtualDub. Free if you don't already have it, from many sites, such as http://virtualdub.sourceforge.net/

Open the file and then first use Video > Direct Stream then File > Save As. Or if that doesn't help use Video > Full Compression and then Configure:

Hello Terry

Sorry for the late response, I hope you got my pm.

Disabling all the import options and restoring them individually unfortunately was not successful.

GSpot displays the file details are in the image at the end.

The Trial version of the Morgan Codec doesn't get passed Spybot S&D.

SS& D detects AdRotator when I run the exe file and disposes of it I'm not sure if this is a false positive.

I have run all my av and malware software and everything seems fine, so I do think it's a a wrong fix.

I'd try Morgan again if I could get a chance to install it correctly.

I tried converting the file as you suggested.

Converting it to mpg format resolved my issue but I wonder still, what the issue is with the file that MEP doesn't like.

Also I wasn't sure what file format's best to convert to for use with MEP 16 Plus for best results.

Thanks again for your help, it's much appreciated.

Edit 2-2-2012

Corrected Typo!

Translation

Converting to mpg resolved the issue..... did not chop the video end off.

I still wonder what might be wrong with the Pentax X90 File.

Generally speaking, which is the best file type to convert to for MEP 16 Plus.

Thanks Again.
