Auto startup

I haven't been able to find a solution for this problem ... it's a problem for me anyhow!

Everytime I turn my laptop on (Windows 11) Photostory opens up automatically. I have Magix Photostory Deluxe 2023, v22.0.3.150 but this was happening on the previous version as well. I've looked to disable this in my laptop's settings but neither Photostory nor Magix is there to be disabled. Any suggestions on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, but neither Magix nor Photostory are listed in the Startup App list.

Hi

Did you try

Open File Explorer from the taskbar.

Select View > Show > Hidden items.

Show Hidden Items wasn't enabled so I've just changed the setting and then rebooted by laptop but Magix & Photostory still aren't showing in the StartUp apps.

I'm off to bed now so I'll sleep on the problem!!! Thanks so much for your ongoing interest in my plight Stephen.

It's now over 12 months since I posted about the issue with Photostory 2023 which by some miracle seemed to be solved. However since updating to Photostory 2024 I've been unable to stop the program opening automatically on Start-Up. Neither Magix nor Photostory appears in the list of Start-Up apps in Settings or through File Explorer. As well as Photostory opening automatically so does an add for Photostory 2025 which I want to stop popping up. I've still to come to grips with Photostory 2024 which I've only just recently installed. I've googled this issue but I haven't been able to find a solution as most posts suggest disabling the automatic opening in Settings but as mentioned earlier in this post, neither Magix nor Photostory appears in the list of Start-Up apps. Any suggestions as to how to solve this problem would greatly appreciated.

Hi

I am assuming from the CPU model that this is a laptop.

The issue you are describing would suggest that either:

  1. the program did not shut down correctly with a sub porcess still running when the computer is shut down, in which case try doing a full restart of the computer ie: Windows button, Power icon, Restart

    or

  2. the laptop is being put in to sleep/hibernate mode, by closing the screen of the laptop, this means any running programs will automatically 'restart' on wake up.

In this case ensure that the computer is always shut down correctly ie: Windows button, Power icon, Shutdown and wait for the full power down before closing the screen.

Thanks for the suggestions John but I do the shutdown that way every night. I never just close the screen. I’ve just had a thought that something that may be causing this to happen is that I normally just X off the program rather than going File > Close. I’ll try that tonight.

Thanks again,

One other suggestion for you: when you have closed the app (either by the X or File>Close) open Task Manager and check whether it is still listed under the Processes Tab.

If it is it is possible it is trying to do some background "house keeping". Allow it at least some time to finish (you may need to keep Task Manager open so you can periodically check.) Assuming the listing eventfully disappears from Task Manager you then need to check whether it continues to open on any subsequent computer start up.

If it does not disappear from Task Manager you could try clicking on its name in the Processes Tab and choosing the option to End Task.

I cannot guarantee that either of these suggestions will "work", but I think they are "worth a try".

OTOH, if it is NOT listed in Task Manager after you close the program ... I honestly have no other idea to suggest, sorry!

Hello Jenny,

Could it be that you mean that when I click on an MPH project file, Photostory 2023 is automatically opened and not Photostorty 2024. You can adjust this yourself.
This is how you do it:

  • Right-click on any MPH project file
  • Then choose: Open with....
  • Click on: Choose another App
  • Select an App to open this MHP file
  • Click on Always

Now the MHP project file is opened with the Photostory version you have chosen

Good luck,
Rob

Thanks for the suggestions Jeff & Rob. I’ll try them both later on and see whether either of them solve the issue.

Hello Jenny,

....In addition to Photostory opening automatically, it also opens an ad for Photostory 2025 that I don't want to appear anymore.....

You can turn off this ad by doing the following:

  • Click on: the gear
  • Click on: Don't show ads
  • Click on: Close

Good luck,
Rob

I’ve done that a few times Rob but the same ad keeps popping up. It’s very annoying.
