Audio Issue-MTS Files

bcf1ca wrote on 5/7/2018, 6:30 AM

Hello all;

I recently did the Windows 10 April 2018 Update on my system and since then, audio no longer plays from some MTS files that worked previously in VPX. I shot a multi-camera theatre production on the weekend and find there is no audio from two cameras that produce MTS files which, under the Audio section of Properties, show them to be:

Bit rate: 256 kbkps,
Channels: 2 channel (stereo)
Audio sample rate :48,000 kHz

These files play just fine outside of VPX i.e. using VLC or the generic player with W10.

Interestingly, MTS files from another camera play without problems in VPX; their Audio Properties are:

Bit rate: 384 kbkps,
Channels: 6
Audio sample rate :48,000 kHz

I went back to some MTS files from a project I worked on prior to the April Update and their Properties match the ones I'm having issues with now. Sure enough, they no longer work in VPX but I know that they worked in VPX under Windows 10, version 1709 (Fall Creators Update). So, my conclusion is that something is broken in the Windows April 2018 update. Is anyone else experiencing a similar problem?

Hi

Yup same here using MEP. My mpeg are all silent inside the MEP, timeline is silent, even previewing the mpeg is silent. However, playing MOV video, there's sound.

All video play outside MEP using vlc or even the old windows media player plays with sound.

@bcf1ca and @wongck

Although you are running different programs, this common element of the Windows 1803 update is somewhat worrying. If you read through various areas of this forum you will find other users reporting problems with various Magix software which seem to have developed various "faults" or now become completely non-operational following installation of the new Windows version.

I will ensure that this is drawn to the attention of Magix staff pretty quickly, if they are not already aware. I don't know if/when a solution will be available.

I currently receive this information from Magix

The problem is with the fact that Dolby Digital decoding is unfortunately no longer supported in the trial versions of the programs. We needed to change the Dolby Digital activation and implementation for licensing reasons, which now calls for an online activation and the download of actual Dolby Digital decoding components from our server, which is only possible in the full version. As a result, you won't have any audio on formats using Dolby Digital audio (e.g. AVCHD and a lot of MPEG-2 files). We hope for your understanding. The full version will, of course, support the decoding of this kind of audio after performing the necessary online activation.

Is this another grim joke? I have a full version of Pro X and not DEMO. I can not activate DD in the program. Can anyone from Magix explain the whole situation? Soon nothing will work in the program.

I found the solution myself. For those interested in film how to do it. It is a waste of time to answer from Magix.

I have reported this to MagiX saupport. They too suggested re-activation of the AC3 module by exporting an empty MPEG using AC3, much like what micha-misterski suggested but he use a different method.

It does not work for me as there was no activation window pop up at all times. I may try again using micha-misterski method. I have to update Windows to 1809, test it, and revert back to 1709 to continue my work. So re-testing it is not very motivating. 😞

My MEP was installed via DVD some 2 years back. I want to re-install it but thinking of all the patch downloading of soemthing like 2-3 DVD worth is very daunting indeed.

I followed micha-misterski's steps and voila, all is well now. It seems odd that more advanced audio would have worked while the simpler audio format didn't, but you can't argue with success. Thanks very much!

What is the version number and full name of MEP as found under Help, About ?

Can you also analyse one of the MPEG videos, which is not playing sound, with MediaInfo and copy and paste the results from the Text view in MediaInfo.

I have now re-installed my MEP, it have downloaded one major update but it still looks like the older version. The current version is now MEP version 16.0.4.119 (UDP3). Unfortunately i did not keep the version number before the re-installation.

Re-installation and re-activation of the software does not help at all - still no sound. I also did the export trick to trigger the codec activation, it never happened. Seems like my MPEG codecs are already activated ???

The MPEG play with sound outside of MEP using the Windows player & VLC. Here is the result of one that did not play sound (in fact seems like any one I pick does not play sound in MEP):

Hi

Thanks for the info. Your MEP is the 2017 version, however we do not know if it is the Basic, Plus or Premium.

Did the mpg files playback in MEP before the Windows 1803 update?

Is then check the following:

  • In Program settings

  1. Playback tab - driver selection is Wave driver or Direct sound, which ever is selected try the other one - the output device should be either Speakers . . . . or the Primary Sound driver respectively and try playback. If you get no sound using the Wave driver or the Direct Sound then try updating your audio card drivers.

  2. Video/audio tab - Import video with sound is selected.

  3. Import/export tab - Import formats section bottom left - MPEG import module is selected.
  • Mixer (M key) - when playing the video on the timeline, the meters show the audio is playing - if not select the video clip then right click it - if there is the option Audio functions, Restore original sound click it and try playing back. Close the mixer.

Hi John
Thanks for looking into my issue.

Thanks for the info. Your MEP is the 2017 version, however we do not know if it is the Basic, Plus or Premium.

The MEP version is the PRO version. It is a boxed version. After the installation, it has downloaded 1 major update. But it looks the older GUI so not the same as my version before the re-installation. This current version icon is the "flim strip" while my previous version was the blue V.

Did the mpg files playback in MEP before the Windows 1803 update?

MEP playback mpeg with sound before the Windows 1803 update. As my mpeg are produced by the same videocam since 2010, there was no change in mpeg format. I have tried older MEP projects and these too were silent during mpeg playback on the timeline view.

One of the 1st thing I checked was the Wave/Direct sound settings. I tried all the combinations, even changing the buffer size. All to no avail.

  1. Video/audio tab - Import video with sound is selected.

Video is imported with sound. I always import audio to a track so I can see the wave and make volume adjustment via the audio curve.  When I do a normalise on clip, it returned immediately. Normally it will show a running bar on the bottom, but there was none.

  1. Import/export tab - Import formats section bottom left - MPEG import module is selected.

Mpeg module is imported.

  • Mixer (M key) - when playing the video on the timeline, the meters show the audio is playing - if not select the video clip then right click it - if there is the option Audio functions, Restore original sound click it and try playing back. Close the mixer.

During playback on the timeline view, the meter on the left pane of the timeline remains at zero when mpeg is played. It will light up when MOV format clip is being play and there is sound.

I opened the Mixer and pushed the master level to max. Still mpeg playback is silent while MOV playback with sound, all on the same timeline view.

MagiX support advices me to cleanly remove MEP, they gave me an URL to help me do that. I was also given to install download MEP rather than from my DVD. The reason why I choose the DVD rather than download is becuase I did not want to download stuff from the net, but looks like it is the norm nowadays. Gone are the days when software are released in working condition, now you need to patch every other day to make software works.

Then installed a web version of MEP 17.

Confusingly, you need to Rt.Click The Video track, not the Audio track, to see the Audio Function > Restore Original Sound context menu.

The Restore original sound only shows up if the sound has gone to a second track and then been ungrouped. If the sound is still linked to the video, then you don't get the command "Restore original sound."

In your example, the audio is still linked to the video.

So now I ungroup my video & audio, and I get the "Restore original sound" in the menu. After click on the restore original sound, I still am getting a silent mpeg playback. There are now 2 same audio stream on the timeline.

No reply from MagiX support after I told them the new installation using their download site does not help restore sound to my mpeg playback. 😭😭😭

Not only John, It will show if you have created a Proxy when importing the Video as this creates a new .WAV uncompressed file behind the scenes.
