Anybody having issue with HEVC encoder after .105 patch?

pmikep wrote on 6/29/2016, 7:19 PM

I just updated to patch 15.0.0.105. Among some things that were fixed was "HEVC export error."

It used to be that when I tried to encode with HEVC, I would get the usual dialog box. But then I would get an error message when I clicked on OK to export.

Now nothing happens when I try to encode with HEVC. That is, I click "Export to HEVC" and there's no dialog box.

This after patch 105.

Anyone getting this too?

Started with MEP 11, then 17, then MX, then MEP 2013, 2015, then 2016. Changed to the fast competitor after that, which worked fine with my non-Intel hardware. Then bought a used Dell with an Intel GPU, just to play with MEP again. Installed MEP 2020 Plus in March 2020, even tho I don't like losing patches if I have to reinstall after a year.

Testing on a Dell Vostro, <s>i3-8100</s> updated to i5-9400 w/ UHD 630, 16 GB 2400 DDR4 (CL15), Win10 Home, heavily NTLite'd. Now with GTX-1650 Super OC'd. Added a WD Blue M.2 for OS (PCIe 3), Apps, Temps and Video-In. 2 Monitors. A WD Blue SSD for outputs. (SATA III.)

Hi

. . . . updated to patch 15.0.0.105 . . . .

The latest patch for MEP 2016 I can find is 15.0.0.102 - did you get your program from Steam?

Ugrading from 15.30.0.90 to 15.0.0.102, the HEVC dialog box works as before and exports correctly.

Note: I am using the Intel HD4600 integrated graphics chipset.

Hi John:

You're correct - it's version .102. (Old age creeping up on me.)

The fact that you still get the HEVC dialog makes me think that it only works if you have an Intel Integrated Graphics chipset. (I have an old AMD CPU, but a new Maxwell based Nvidia GTX-960 graphics card. With the latest drivers. I even added back the CUDA .dll's. But no change.)

If my hypothesis is correct, then wouldn't it be better if a box popped up saying something like "Your hardware does not support HEVC"? (Instead of MEP not responding at all.)

I have a spare HD with a vanilla version of Win 7 on it. I will plan to try patch .102 on it just for completeness.

There have been several instances of graphical issues ieg dialog boxes incomplete or not displaying at all with NVidia cards and the latest drivers.  You could try rolling back the drivers to an older version to see if this fixes the issue or put in a support request to Magix.

. . . . I have a spare HD with a vanilla version of Win 7 on it. I will plan to try patch .102 on it just for completeness. . . . .

Do be aware that if you switch activation to a different computer you will not be able to revert back to the original for one month.

According to Magix sales blurb, Hardware Accelerated decoding (and encoding I imagine) is available for HEVC, (only) with the new Skylake Intel processors, so this could be a factor.

Yikes! Thanks for the warning. (Is that a new policy? 'Cause I've done this back and forth stuff before for testing and it worked last time I did it.) In any event, sadly, this will be my last version of MEP. I am NOT going to go with their new 365 pricing policy.(Fortuantely, MEP 2016 Plus does everything I need, so I don't need to look elsewhere. I did try the trial of CyberMedia's PowerDirector. Their UI still too "cartoonish" for me.)

It is not a new policy but I have a faint idea that they dropped the 1 month stand down and you just need to deactivate in the File or Help menu on one PC then activate on another, but cannot test this. This only applies to MEP2016 I think, so earlier versions should be unaffected.

. . . . . they dropped the 1 month stand down . . . .

According to this page, under Licence verification, there is still a 1 month stand down, however there is no mention of it in the EULA.

. . . . This only applies to MEP2016 . . . .

Applies to MMM 2015 and 2016, MEP 2015 and 2016 and VPX 8 - do not know about other programs in the Magix stable.

Hi John

Thanks for the clarification. I was unsure about 2015 because pmikep said he had swopped several times previously, but he may have been talking about earlier products.

BTW - I am not sure what Support mean by the statement in the Licence Verification section "Of course, it is otherwise still possible to use the software offline."

That is a confusing statement - the previous sentence implies the program will stop working after a few days.

One would assume that the above statement means you can continue using the program however no online features or updates will be available until you are back online.

I think I've found the answer to my question.

First, I reset the "Settings" for the Program. That brought back the HEVC dialog box. (Although when I tried to encode I still got an error message (telling me, incorrectly, to check my resolution setting, etc.).)

Then I changed the default mp4 encoder to MainConcept. After I did that, then I didn't get the HEVC dialog box anymore.

Also, when I got the HEVC dialog box, I noticed that the screen would flicker before I got the error message. I set up my pocket camera on a tripod and set it for super high slo-mo and recorded my computer screen. It took a few tries, but I managed to capture a Window titled "Mixing down". Here's what it looks like. Here's what it looks like.

So I'm back to thinking that the HEVC add-on pay-for encoder only works with new Intel CPU's. (And/or possibly old (Kepler-based) Nvidia graphics cards.)
