All video formats have audio de-sync when previewing and export

Sma1525 wrote on 12/14/2020, 7:53 AM

I just upgraded to MEP 2021 from an older version (MEP MX 11). in 2021 when I'm editing videos I have a de sync between the video and audio in all of files I have tried (mp4's and mkv's) by what feels like random amounts. the audio is early and it carries through into the export. I tested to see if it was my new system but my older (version 11) still works normally, minus the fact it is extremely slow. the only thing I can think of is possibly the import process but I'm not sure. my video files are recorded on OBS with 60 fps constant frame rate, 48k audio at 160 bit. I have tried creating frame tables (both settings and on individual objects). and I've tried separating the wave forms as well. I have also tried importing the video and audio separately and even there I'm having the same issues. And I have tried a different MPEG Codec. again I have no issues in the older version 11. Any help is welcome. Thank-you.

System specs:

10900X

EVGA X299 FTW

RTX 2080ti

Creative Labs SoundBlaster Z

16gb DDR4

And I'm working off of only NVME drives when editing.

Nothing is overclocked at the moment, but everything is water cooled.

@Sma1525

Hi, and welcome to the user to user forums for MEP and VPX.

First may I say we are getting increasing amounts of queries about files from screen capture devices recently and other file problems regarding audio sync issues and stuttering playback and export problems.

There has been a common theme that has arisen from such threads.

That the files were editable in earlier versions of MEP and VPX.

But your post is slightly different. You say all your older files were recorded at a constant frame rate?

Have you checked that statement by looking at the file data using MediaInfo? If not, could you please check or at least verify you have done so? A post here with the MediaInfo from a file may be helpful.

If you are correct then the problem may also be caused by the GOP structure used in OBS which seems a lot different to a file recorded with say a video camera. Why at this point it should make a difference to MEP or VPX I don't think members here have got to the bottom of yet. There does seem to be a difference in the way MEP and VPX are doing things within the Infusion Engine now being used. Whether this is purely at a software level or an interaction with the GPUs I don't think we are are sure about.

Your post though if accurate may be one more clue as to what is happening.

As well as posting here it would be a good idea to get into contact with Magix support at info@magix.net and ask them as well. They must be aware of this by now as I'm sure others have already filed questions to them but the more people contact them the more chance Magix may come up with an update fix on the issue. There have been curiously few updates to the new versions of MEP or VPX so maybe the problem is more deep routed than we know.

If your files are indeed constant frame rate then any previous advice we have given to others in the past may not be of help to you. I'm sorry.

Ray.

@Sma1525

Thank you for the additional information.

Well at least it is constant frame rate but I'm not seeing any recorded GOP structure showing.

I've put one of my OBS studio recorded files up against your posting for others here to look at as I'm sure some others have looked but not responded yet awaiting your reply.

OBS on it's base settings seems to have an open GOP structure. I modified my settings within OBS in case I ever did need to edit such a file, but to date haven't tried or needed to edit down one of my files. I may try later to see if I get such problems. I opened OBS Studio to show you my settings and got this update showing.

So I'm going to update the program and see if my old settings stick.

I'm hoping that by sometime tomorrow another user may chip in but for now it does seem to me to be tied to the GOP structure of the files. It does not however explain why old versions of MEP coped while the last versions of MEP and VPX in particular are not coping.

For others that had a problem we were asking them to convert the file using Handbrake to make the files usable within MEP. I'm not sure if that will work in your case as the files are already constant frame rate. Whether a conversion will change the GOP structure or not. You could try and see it that helps. If it does, that too is useful information to have and for now a workaround for you, although not an ideal one.

What I'm really hoping is Magix comes out with a patch for this problem as it is not just some OBS users that are having this problem but the first evidence that I have seen that has happened with a confirmed case of an OBS file being recorded at a constant frame rate.

I will try editing one of my own files and see if I get the same problems. If I can edit without problems I will post my OBS settings for you yo copy and try out. Again not an ideal solution as it won't help with your old files.

Lets also see if anyone else chips in. This for me is getting very technical and although I may have found a working solution for future use of OBS recordings through experimentation, I have no idea why this has become important.

Ray.

@CubeAce @Sma1525

The file he shows from MediaInfo, is the same type of problem we see over at the VegasCreativeSoftware Forum, when trying to "load" to the timeline of either Vegas Pro or Movie Studio.

It is in an .mkv container, which by a lot of YouTubers using OBS to record/stream with, use this particular "Container" as if for some odd reason, the recording is interrupted, will keep what it has recorded. It is also used since it also "records" multiple Audio tracks.

What @Sma1525 needs to do, is open OBS back up, and in the "File" menu, there is an option to "REMUX"; basically point to the shown file here, then pick a destination folder, and "REMUX" the file to a file with a .mp4 extension, which should provide the necessary "CODEC" to be open within MEP or VPX. The "REMUX-ed" file, if then opened for viewing by MediaInfo, may show that the "Frame Rate" may be "Variable", unlike how we all want that "Constant Frame Rate", but it should be minimal enough to not cause a problem.

The reason for using OBS, is since the file originated there, best to use it's own feature. You could "Re-Encode" in Handbrake to a .mp4 (h.264) compatible file, but I do not know how much it would affect the quality of the original recording.

If @Sma1525 has enough drive space on his machine, using a separate nvme drive, using the Advanced feature in OBS Recording, and using a lossless codec like UTVideo (put in an .avi container, with a .wav "PCM" audio portion), it would probably serve him/her better. Especially since he has an Intel HEDT platform, with plenty enough CPU "oomph" to record with. He/she could go to the VegasCreativeSoftware forum, and do a search on OBS settings by user "musicvid" about this type of setting in OBS, or the main suggested OBS settings by NickHope, should he/she prefer to stay with .mp4 recording, if they would like to change from .mkv.

The attached is from one of my computers. If you go down to the particular part where it says "magicyuv", just use the drop down and use the UT Video. This will give you a Lossless .avi file, big though, but should work great in MEP.

Hi @mmcswnavy24

Glad you have contributed with further info. Really helpful. I tested my existing OBS recordings in MEP, cutting up and rearranging OBS clips and then saving the project. Reopening it and it all plays back and exports in sync. I have managed to keep the quality of the recordings the same without increasing the standard file size. I record at 50fps but that is not important. What I find important is the MP4 format and stating a GOP structure. I keep the GOP length either to the same as the frame rate or half of the frame rate.

Sma1525

These are my alterations and are working on my system. As I say, the perceived quality and file size remains roughly the same. Try mmcsnavy24's suggestion about rerunning the files through OBS to try to sort out the old recordings. I have nothing better to offer.

mmcswnavy24

Maybe you could ask the Vegas community to try these settings out there as well. I would be interested in the results. I think John EB also came up with a similar solution to mine on this forum. This does not require any remuxing of the files.

@CubeAce @mmcswnavy24 Hey, thanks for the help. the new settings seem to have worked. it also turns out that even though i had OBS set to constant frames, when it remux's MKVs to MP4s they become inconstant. I don't know why the mkvs have the same issue even though they are consistant but ill play with a few settings and see if i can get it working. either way thank you so much for the help!

CubeAce wrote on 12/15/2020, 3:05 AM

@Sma1525

That's good news.

The following information is conjecture on my part. I'm no coder or expert on this. I just tried to reason the problem out.

The results you were seeing before could have been caused if you were recording game play and the frames rate of the game increased and decreased by large, varying amounts during that gameplay. I think this is why OBS chose a more open GOP structure. To accurately capture the game play action frame by frame.

The problem then becomes that most video editors can't deal with the variation of frames that occur and have to dump frames from the encoded files when they exceed the project frame rate.

That makes the video shorter but leaves the sound track the same length. When you try to play or edit it, the two will never match up.

Forcing OBS to record MP4 and putting in a shorter GOP setting forces OBS into recording at either a frame rate to match a video cameras output settings (in my case to edit with 50fps action cam footage) or at a normal screen refresh rate of 60Hz.

Again it is probably not safe to record at the faster refresh rates of gaming monitors as those are not normal video camera file refresh rates and are not supported export file rates or project setup settings. Most video editing packages are designed to edit broadcast camera footage and not screen capture software or mobile phone footage.

Anyway. Back to main explanation.

According to the information and explanation on GOP structures in the Movie Edit Pro and VPX manuals, GOP structures should equal the frame rate or be half the frame rate, with the shorter GOP structure being more secure (I assume meaning less chance of video / audio drift) but create larger files (in MBs per minute) while the longer GOP structure (frame rate equals number to put into the GOP structure section) will be a smaller file size but with more chance of audio sync problems. I have not experienced the latter yet, keeping to the 'make GOP equal to frame rate' method, but my longest file to date has been just over two hours.

So that was the reasoning behind the changes I made.

Right or wrong or even if this fix will work for everyone I have no idea.

I'm glad to see they seem to work in this instance, but really if the MEP and VPX programs worked in the past there must be a proper fix for this to come from Magix. There is a chance though they will ignore the problem or can't resolve it within the program at present.

If that is the case then some of these solutions to the problem need to be made into a sticky thread for easy reference, please mods.

IMHO We should also look for this GOP structure variation in some of the other complaints we see from some mobile phone files and action cams.

. . . . Forcing OBS to record MP4 and putting in a shorter GOP setting forces OBS into recording at either a frame rate to match a video cameras output settings (in my case to edit with 50fps action cam footage) or at a normal screen refresh rate of 60Hz. . . . . .

Even then, if the computer cannot keep up, it will start dropping frames with the associated issues this causes in a video editor - IMO dropped frames are a bigger issue then VFR, once dropped they are gone - the video editor will never know they were dropped unlike VFR video.

I never use OBS for screen recording - I use ScreenCast-o-Matic (desktop version) which uses a 2 stage screen capture process - the first step captures the screen and puts the captured video into an intermediate file, the second stage, at the end of recording, is to export the intermediate data as a mp4 file. There is a disk usage penalty for this in that the intermediate capture files are approx 15x to 20x bigger than the final mp4 export.

Hi John.

By not using the NVEC coding option within OBS studio I checked the use of GPU usage within Windows as best I can which seemed to my eye to be non present. I was getting an additional 1% hit on my CPU. I think if you keep OBS from capturing excessive frame rates the chances of frame dropping on a system capable of use MEP or VPX to be a minimal risk. As in this instance it seemed capable of recording frame rates higher than the project frame rates I would put the risk as being even lower, although on lower end systems it may be the case.

Hence my reluctance to say this could be a 'cure all' method of ending all people's woes.

Hi Ray

I agree totally with you, additionally I am surprised that Nvidia users with the appropriate GPUs do not use Nvidia Share ( formerly ShadowPlay) which is specifically designed for screen capturing on NV graphics cards and has a mode very similar to the software I use.

I also stream and I archive streams for editing, that's why I use OBS. I am going to try using Shadow play and see if maybe it has something to do specifically with the nVidia Encoder.

That is what OBS is really good at and does take some beating - I do not game so I do not have Share installed to test - it would be interesting to see your findings using Share.

Greetings,

Just lately I seem to start a post by apologising for tagging a comment onto a topic because what I have to say seems relevant (I think so anyway) but not worth starting a new topic. Once again I'm doing it as there are several topics re OBS and dropped frames, audio de-syncing etc so apologies once more for tagging onto this one.

I've come across this https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/guides/broadcasting-guide/ which is Nvidia's recommended setup for gameplay streaming on OBS. I've tried the settings and (with a little tweaking on my part which probably wasn't necessary) the end results seem marginally better in that the footage is less jumpy using "real" video not gamplay.

Just thought it may be of interest to those that use OBS and are having problems.

Hi Andy.

Thank you for that info page. At least it explains why the recorder is set using 0 frames.

What I would say is it seems to me that nvidia has still set that up primarily for capturing smooth gaming graphics and not editing. So I would go with capturing 2 'B' frames rather than 4. I also notice they also recommend a frame rate of 60 as well as recording at a constant frame rate. If I was mixing the files from OBS with camera footage I would probably match the OBS frame rate to my cameras frame rate. If not I would go with the 60fps as it is possibly still the most used monitor refresh rate.

Thank you. A good bit of information.

Ray.
