hi every body I have samplitude 2014 installed on my new second hand windows 7 4 gb ran amd quad core running at 3.8ghz. anyway i did some multitracks and saved them as complete vip,s and i saved them on an xternal drive and this was working until i installed mmm premium 2015 . you see ibefore i installed mmm i would go into my computer, get up the xternal, and find the the sampltude project file among all the other files like H2,s and freeze tracks and other files related to the project i am working on. now when i save in the same manner as i have been doing they save as magix projects and i cant open them either as mutitrack vip,s or magix projects in there own format which doesnt seem to be compatible for some reason. i have uninstalled mmm and restarted but it keeps treating my samplitude multitrack vip,s as magix projects, and these are new files not the old ones, the only way i can save any new vip,s is within the program and this defeats the reason for saving everythig on the xternal drive so i dont run out of space on my main drive, this also a good way to back everything up. so if you have any ideas i would like to hear them terry or john who helped me out before oh terry that was really funny about the bells i actually have two churches nearby but i eventually found it was to do with my midi controller keyboard i have to switch on the midi after iload up the program then it seems to be ok  anyway all the best jona bahookie

Hi Jona,

I'm having trouble following what you are saying.

First, just to get the jargon settled, Magix is the name of the company, not the product, so when you say that it saves as a Magix project, you have to specify what you mean. In Magix Samplitude Music Studio (SMS), a project will be saved with the extension VIP. In Magix Music Maker (MMM), a project will be saved with the extension MMM.

To open a project in SMS, you go into SMS and load it - the VIP file that is.

To open a project in MMM, you go into MMM and load it - the MMM file that is.

You say "i have uninstalled mmm and restarted but it keeps treating my samplitude multitrack vip,s as magix projects, and these are new files not the old ones, the only way i can save any new vip,s is within the program and this defeats the reason for saving everythig on the xternal drive so i dont run out of space on my main drive,"

What does MMM have to do with the SMS projects?

New VIP's are created within SMS, so I don't understand your comment at all.

When you reinstalled MMM, did you go into the Program Settings (P) and change the location of the folders to point to your external drive? No, you didn't, thus the project and associated files will be stored under the default locations, which will likely be on your C drive, unless you changed the default. Take a look and then change the locations to where you want.

Mine are all on drive B, which is not my system drive, except for Soundpools which point to where they are installed by default on my C drive. See below.

Hi Jona,

I think I know what you are doing. You are trying to open SMS by double-clicking in Windows Explorer on one of the files, like a .H2 or .HDP file. Don't do that. These are temporary files that are created by the VIP.

Open SMS by itself first, then within it, open the VIP. Everything that you had when you last saved the VIP will be brought in.

When you go to P or Y, Program settings, General, and indicate the directory locations, SMS will use these as the locations to save your files.

No files are saved in the Program as such, that is, nothing makes the program bigger. The Program is an engine, the VIP is the car; people (recorded songs) and baggage (effects) get in and out of the car, not the engine. The project information is saved in a VIP file that is basically a set of instructions that has things like Get wave file 1 and put it on track 1, get wave file 2 and put it on track 2, get soundpool loop x and put it on track 3 starting at bar 2, apply effects, automations curves etc. You don't try to start a car by talking to one of the people that sat in the car, you start the engine, meaning you open SMS, then you load the car (load the VIP).

When you open a new project, you should immediately save it and give it a proper name. Note where the VIP will be saved. You can change the location if you don't like the default. SMS proposes the date as the name of the VIP so change it to something that means sense, for example Jona1.VIP. Then when you look at the recording parameters, you will see that it proposes to save the wave file as Jona1_01.wav for the first recording (you can change this), Jona2_02.wav for the second one etc.

Make a couple of test recordings to see. Look at the location of your VIP using Windows Explorer. You will see something like this:

You see the VIP, the wave files that you recorded and the temporary .H2 and .HDP files. Again, do not try to open the VIP or SMS by opening 1 of these other files using Windows Explorer. Don't even try to open SMS by clicking on the .VIP, unless SMS is the only program on your computer that uses the extension .VIP.

Below is a screen shot of files that were recorded using MMM. You will see that it too uses .HDP and .WAV files. Windows only remembers 1 program to link each extension. If the extension .WAV is linked to Windows Media Player, then double-clicking on a WAV file will open Windows Media Player, not MMM or SMS. Same with .HDP (temporary file). The most recent program installed (in your case MMM) will likely have told Windows that a .HDP extension is to be linked to it. Windows Explorer doesn't know that in one case it should open one particular program and in another case open a different program. So please, do not try to open these files using Windows Explorer. Open the program that created the files and load the .VIP in the case of SMS or the .MMM the case of MMM. It will open/use the .H2, .HDP, .H0 files.

Movie Edit Pro also creates .HDP and .WAV files, as does Audio Cleaning Lab. I can open SMS and go and bring in a .WAV file that I created by Movie Edit Pro, but I will never try to open a temporary file like .HDP with anything.

Magix Audio & Music Lab 2014 Premium also uses the same .VIP extension for its projects and .H0 and .HDP temporary files.

Does this help?

BTW, at 61, you are younger than I am.
