adjusting size of video MEP 2016 premium

pat-m98 wrote on 11/14/2015, 3:28 PM

I am using a video as a background and having photos flying in.

I have a video that was taken from an ipad: active movie resolution 1920x1080(16.9) 30fps. and file IMG resolution 1280 x 720(16.9)30fps

Of course my video was taken sideways on my ipad. When I rotate it on my timeline, it does not fit the monitor. (Too small) When I try and resize it to fit the page, it destorts it, and I don't get the whole pic anymore. Is there a quick fix to this?

Also I have videos taken sideways with my IPHONE, and when I rotate the video on my timeline, the same thing happens. Obviously I will take videos from now on, the right way, now that I know!

So my question is: how do I make a video that was taken sideways on my device, rotate and fit the screen?

I tried to find a similar question already asked on this board, but no luck?

Hi Pat,

Work your way through this thread - learning experience.

Select the image on the timeline, Effects, View/Animation, Rotation/Mirror, click on one of the 90 degree rotating buttons. Then go to Size/Position and click on Maximize and Centre if necessary.

Obviously, a video taken in portrait mode on a cell phone like a photo, cannot fit full screen (from left to right) on a wide screen tv/monitor unless some is truncated at the top and the bottom. Zoom in and reposition to suit what you want. You will lose some resolution.

Hi Pat

. . . . When I rotate it on my timeline, it does not fit the monitor. (Too small) . . .

Select the Effects tab, View / Animation, Size/position option then use the handles indicated below to drag the image to fill the screen - ensure the option Maintain proportions is checked.

Thanks guys..

John EB - I was messing with that, but  its a little out of whack. Blurry, distorted, and alot of the pic was removed. Like trying to get blood from a stone I guess?

John CB- I read the thread, alot to take in, but I will play with it. I do have a dumb question to ask..... you say to change my project settings to 720 x 1280.  I only have an option to change to 1280 x 720. Am I to assume that is the same thing? Sorry but I read all your posts , and take everyones advise, and when I do it EXACTLY step by step, it works, so thought I would ask? I'm a TOTAL newbie but have learned soooo much these last few weeks. Just getting all the lingo down was challenging.

But I did learn one very important thing....how to hold your device when you take a vid! I have to go tomorrow and take a whack of vids for my loops!

Thanks again

Hi Pat,

What I wanted you to see was mainly that the op wanted a portrait image to fill his landscape monitor/tv, i.e. completely full screen, with nothing cropped off and no distortion. Obviously, it can't be done unless he turns his monitor or widescreen tv 90 degrees. It was frustrating trying to explain this to the op.

If you intend to show your videos only on a cell phone or a tablet where it is easy to turn it 90 degrees, then you can go into the project settings, E, and change the format at the bottom. Inverse the size and change 16:9 to 9:16. This will change the window. Use the same settings upon export. You might want to do a test first. Of course, the export likely won't work with many computer viewer programs and you definitely don't want to burn a DVD or BD using this shape.

The best is to reshoot your video clips in portrait mode if possible.

I suggest that you live with your videos in portrait mode on a normal landscape window. You can get creative and move the portrait video to the left or right and then add in a couple of photos or another video into the blank areas. See below. I added a background so that you can see the entire 1920x1080 window.

John CB- funny you mentioned that.  That is exactly what I did. Put my vid to the side and added 2 on the side!  Thanks again
