Activation

Widetrack wrote on 9/21/2018, 10:34 AM

I'm trying to activate my copy of Forge 9 on a new computer. I entered my serial number in the pop-up that opens when I try to start the software, and clicked OK. Magix sent me an email with an activation number, which I pasted into the popup. I got an error message saying the activation number was not valid. How do I resolve this?

I tried several times to get help via the online tech support request area, but it only lists 5 options, none of which applies to my question, and if I click on any of them, it goes to a page talking about a different problem. There is no place to enter a request or email, and only sends me around in circles. This is quite disappointing.

Confirm your Sound Forge serial number is the same listed on your 'My products' page in the Magix Service Center.
Otherwise Magix Sound Forge customer service & tech support are different URLs from Vegas.

Thanks, Rick. Don't know why, but every time I got to that page yesterday, there was no option at the bottom to go to the message page. But this time, there was, and I'm going to use it. I went to the my products page too--which I also couldn't find yesterday--and it appears they only have records for me up to SF 8. I don't use it much these days, so I could probably get by with 8, but it would sure be nice to continue with the last version I paid for. Do you have a sense if Magix will accede if I give them my SF9 password, and let me use it again? BTW, I saw on your user profile that you've been using the Sonic Foundry software about as long as I have. It's nice to see another long-timer here, so many seem to have gone. I only cut the occasional video these days, but it's always fun to get back to it for a while, and Vegas is still pretty good to use. Anyway, thanks again for the info.

Serial numbers are not interchangeable between versions. A SF Pro 9 serial number can only be used to authorize SF Pro 9, same with SF 8 and other versions. There were not a whole lot of changes between 8, 9 and 10, except multi-channel support and some third-party plug-ins, for instance the iZotope mastering suite was included starting w/ Pro 9 (separate install, registration and serial #). With SF Pro 11, SCS changed the Record and Plug-in UI.. less intuitive IMO. If you purchased SF12, it should be listed in your 'My Products' page, unless you used a different email / login from previous versions. If that's the case, you will have to contact customer service. You could try to 'Create activation code' in the service center if you do have a Pro 12 serial number (though I'm not sure how that works since I have never had to use it).

Thanks Rick. I actually do have serials for both SF 8 and 9. But somehow, after getting the "Bad authentication code" notice during my SF9 install, every time I tried to register I got a notice that The software was "not installed correctly." So I gave up, went to the My Products, DL'd SF8 and (after installing two Net Framework packages) installed and registered 8. And no, I have not bought SF12. But I finally have a working copy of SF! Thanks for your help. BTW, Magix tech support never responded to my email on this. From reading around the forum, I guess that's SOP now.
