MP4 is a container file format not a video codec - to determine what the program is asking for we need to know the actual codec it is asking for.

Download and install MediaInfo and analyse one of the clips that the programis requesting the codec for, and post the results, see this tutorial if you are not familiar with MediaInfo  on how to setup MediaInfo and analyse a video clip.  

.3gp files are primarliy a mobile phone video format. There are several issues with mobile phone video depending on there encoding parameters, ie H.263 or H.264 codec and AMR or AAC based audio streams.

I would suggest you also analyse one of these files with MediaInfo and posts the results.

I've done some investigating. I converted my 3gp to MP4 by smart-rendering the video (which is AVC) and converting the audio to 48khz stereo AAC using VideoRedo. I did try to do a conversion in Handbrake but that program is a dog's breakfast.

MEP was able to open file (although it incorrectly read the resolution as 4:3 when the video is actually 3:2), so it appears the original wacko/non-standard audio format is throwing MEP.

That won't be of help to @Yakim-Dyankov though; the easiest method to open 3gp files in MEP still appears to be using the HAALI Splitter.

John, the message posted was "with other file the program wants me to install Mpeg 4 codec ". I assume the OP wouldn't have expanded the text from "MP4" to "MPEG 4"), especially given MP4 isn't a codec.

Interested to know, the MediaInfo looks to my untrained eye as a reg AVC, what makes this file unable to be read?

True, however it is quite common for the 2 names to be used interchangably.

I have also checked the .3gp file and as @Former user has commented it will not load into MEP, however if you change the file extension to .mp4, it will load without issues other than that the framrate is variable which given the wide range may cause audio sync issues when editing.

Re your MPEG 4 codec issue, that is odd because the program should open those files automatically, without extra downloads. Could you please post a screenshot of the message that pops up saying it can't be installed.

Re the 3gp problem, I suggest you install the HAALI Media Splitter from Videohelp. The actual EXE filename is "MatroskaSplitter23062013.exe" but it will install as "HAALI Media Splitter".

During the install, set it up as follows:

You should then be able to open your 3GPs. If not, let us know.

For the benefit of everybody else, here is a 3gp of mine that "cannot be read" unless I have the HAALI Media Splitter installed. When you then open a 3GP, you'll see in the system tray the HAALI icon, probably "hidden". A similar thing happens when MEP is using other third-party codecs such as MagicYUV.

Strange I cant find the way to change file extension in windows 11 . With my previous OS Win 7 it was so easy.

Can you not right click the image and select rename the file?

You have to highlight the whole file name (or the suffix) or it will ignore the file extension.

Unfortunately the changes are necessary for users of touch screen devices, too small icons are difficult to hit with a finger tip.

I wish the 'nerds' who run web sites that tell you how to do things would also list the easy ways !

Getting in to change the file name/extension is easily accomplished with just 2 single clicks, not a double click.

In Windows File Explorer, left click once to select the file, left click again in the filename, the name part of the file will be highlighted, you can now edit the filename and/or extension.

The irony is that the right-click option is still there, it's just in the "more options" menu on the right-click menu (according to the link above)!

Very true, though it is possible to revert to the older classic menu as in Windows 10 with a registry hack.

So far I have not found a way to add MediaInfo to the initial right click context menu, either as an icon or in the list of options - it always appears under the 'Show more options'.

Thanks. I couldn`t find settings for showing file extensions but now I find it. Renaming the 3gp file didn't solve the problem because The other problem with MP4 still exists. but I find a way to transform the file to a format that works. Thanks to all who gave advices! although it would be nice to work directly with .mp4 🙂

No - the PC is my - personal and has only one account. I tried first the recommendation to start the program as administrator and the result i absolutely the same. Now I confess that I am afraid to follow the next recommendation to disable the program and install it again because I`m not sure whether I will be able to do it without loosing the license and/or bonus plugins which can be activated until three months from the purchase.

Hi.

Assuming you have activated the third party plugins and opened accounts with the suppliers of those plugins and registered them on their sites then any subsequent uninstall and re-install should allow those plugins to be downloaded and active. Just don't lose various account details or login passwords / user names.

Although personally I seldom uninstall a program to get it working.

Have you added all of the program folders to your antivirus program or firewall to exclude them from scanning?

My feeling is that this is a windows 11 problem somewhere. Possibly a security setting.

Click on the Support link at the top of this page, then keep clicking through the pages until you are prompted to type in your issue. Type in anything and then you'll finally get a button down the bottom to contact Support directly.
