24 bit and 32 bit WAV files vs. ACID

jcksn82chrvl wrote on 11/7/2023, 3:46 AM

Hi All,

I have faced with a problem with Acid Music Studio (I have own), and also in Acid Pro (runs trial).
When I open a 32 bit or a 24 bit wave file into my mix, the files open with random unwanted noise in it.
Exactly like this (thank you for the YT user for this video):

When I play the files outside the acid it sounds good without this noise.

I follow the instructions of this video, and saved the files into 16 bit wav, and the noise disappeared...

Is there any other solution, except this?

I cannot use ACID above 16 bit?

Thank for your comments.

@jcksn82chrvl Maybe there is something wrong with your WAV file? What happens if you convert it into a 24 bit or 32 bit WAV and load it back into Acid?

jcksn82chrvl wrote on 11/7/2023, 5:38 AM

If I converted the 32 bit to 24 bit, it was the same result.
When I converted to 16 bit, it worked well.
When I converted a 16 bit wav to 24 bit, it also worked well, without any unwanted noise.

The original file was recorded by a friend with MAC OS (with an 'off topic' DAW), I use Windows 10 OS.
I don't know does it matter or not...

@jcksn82chrvl Good question. Is it a standard PCM WAV file?

How can I check this?
From Acid it looks like Wav, 24 bit.

I have recorded from my sound card directly in 24 bit with ACID pro.

When I listen the recorded file, it is also produced this noise.

I had to set the sound card properties to 16 bit, and it was OK again.

@jcksn82chrvl There is a free tool called MediaInfo which will give you a detailed description of your audio and video files.

Thanks. I have checked it.

Yes, it is a PCM Wav 32 bit (that was one of the original files, which was problematic).

So, I don't know what happens.

I have to work with 16 bit files?

Update.

Media info says, about the original problematic file received from my friend:

PCM (IEEE)

My 24 bit recorded file with ACID (also noisy):

PCM

@jcksn82chrvl There is an option for a much more detailed description. Maybe it tells you more.

Looks like this: https://mediaarea.net/de/MediaInfo/Screenshots

No, Acid definitely supports higher bitrates.

@jcksn82chrvl Additionally, please check whether your sample rate and bit depth settings for your playback and recording devices in Windows are set accordingly. Maybe this is causing your problem.

Sorry for the absence, I could not deal with topic in these days.
I will check this!

On the other hand, when I zoom into the noisy waves I can see the noise...
I hope the playback options will solve this...

I have checked the sound control panel properties.
I don't have as much oportonity as I can see on the linked page.

I have only 3 choice on my sound card's output:
44,1 kHz 16 bit
48 kHz 24 bit
48 kHz 16 bit

If I check my notebook's speaker output I have more choice.

Here I have 44,1 kHz and 24 bit.

I could set up the same bitrate and frequency everywhere:

But when I record something, I have faced the same thing :(

jcksn82chrvl wrote on 11/24/2023, 1:32 PM

When I record it with Aud***ty with the same setting, it is good... :(

Playback is also good in that program.

When I open it in ACID Pro, it gets noisy :(

jcksn82chrvl wrote on 11/24/2023, 3:15 PM

I have missed the check the microphone settings. It was 48 kHz. I have set it to the correct value according to the playback and device settings.

I recorded another sample, but there no change. Still noisy... :(

jcksn82chrvl wrote on 11/24/2023, 4:02 PM

Maybe I should have to increase the sample rate?

I have tried to set up different sample rates. No result... Any other ideas?

I had to record in 24 bit, and it didn't let me 'sleep'. It should work. I got in touch with Magix support and they also told, it should work to record in 24 bit. We were trying to figure out together, what can cause the problem. Tried different settings, tried reinstalling, tried a lot of things without any results. Finally I have accidentally found the solution. Before that, I ran the program on the system drive (of course), that is an SSD. The project file and the recorded files were stored and saved on another hard disc drive (which is a HDD). When I copied the files to the system drive the white noise disappeared when I played them back! I don't know whether the reason is the technical difference (for example the speed) between the SDD and the HDD. Maybe the reason is that the files and recordings should have been stored on the same (system) drive, on which the program runs. I have shared my observation with the support, and the told, it should not cause problem. It should work with storing files on a different drive. On the other hand they will investigate it. However it should not cause problem, using this method is solved my problem. After that I use the system drive for the projects and recordings, I can record in 24 bit and play it back without problem, and without any white noise. So the problem maybe called: solved.
