2023 Version keeps on freezing up

Eon-deKoker wrote on 3/5/2024, 2:11 PM

As I am editing a 10 second video, the software keeps on freezing - the GUI is stuck but the processes are running in task manager. I have now exhausted all options: Ran CCleaner, rebooted the laptop, Magix Movie Studio 2023 is the only program running. After 5 restarts I have completed the video now but when exporting it freezes with 1 sec remaining. It creates the file but I get an error when trying to open it. There is 25% memory available. In the past 10 years I cannot recall any software that hanged so many times. I checked and there is no new updates available. It has now froze on 3 out of 3 tries to export the video from mp4 to mp4. I have tried AVI as well but this also freezes. The popup screen shows Mixing Down . . .

Any ideas?

Hi

We need more information to help diagnose the issue you are having:

The specification of your computer system including Windows version and program version, see this topic for what is required, and please quote processor and graphics card make/model in full.

I would suggest you put this information in your profile signature so we do not have to keep asking for it.

Are the graphics card/integrated GPU drivers up to date?

A screenshot of the Program settings, Device options tab and a MediaInfo analysis of the clip being imported may also help.

Have any effects been applied to the video clip?

Hi CubeAce, I checked the Project/Movie Settings and the Audio sample rate is 48kHz. This is greyed out so it is not possible to change it. I tried all the settings but this one is fixed and cannot be changed.

You will also see that the video frame rate is 29.97 but the project setting is 30. I changed this to 29.97 but the problem remained.

At this stage, the software is not usable and it keeps bugging me to upgrade to the 2024 version which I decided not to do. To me it is unacceptable that software hangs or crashes without exception handling, an error log, feedback to the user and automated bug reporting. It feels like it used to be 20 years ago.

I also see that I am not alone in experiencing this. The stability issue has also been listed in the product review here: https://www.pcmag.com/reviews/magix-movie-edit-pro-premium. So I will be moving on.

@Eon-deKoker

Eon, as JohnEB asked, could we have a screenshot of your Device Options tab (File>Settings>Program).

There is something fundamentally wrong which shouldn't be. The program should cope with that file easily. It's a matter of finding what it is.

On that tab, you could try swapping the hardware options to the CPU (assuming it's currently set to the Iris.) or Iris if it is currently set to the CPU.

Do you have a separate GPU in your machine?

If it's appropriate, could you post that file onto Google Drive to share it with us to check it on our machines. That will ensure it doesn't get recoded, as would happen if you attached it to a post. Set the sharing to "everyone who has the link".

If Magix won't accept the MOV file directly, try "converting" it to MP4 with AVIDemux as per my guide here. It could be that XMedia is putting something in the file header which Magix doesn't like.

Last changed by AAProds on 3/6/2024, 12:11 AM, changed a total of 1 times.

All my forum comments are based on or refer to my System 1.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

345 GB is free.

AAProd, as indicated above, the PC has an Intel Iris graphics processor. I am using it for CAD/CAM without any issues.

I have changed the settings from hardware acceleration to CPU on export. It still stops with 1 second remaining and then hangs while displaying "Mixing Down". So there is a bug in the Mixing Down process. The Media analysis of the main clip was provided above.

I managed to play the file and then screen capture it with another program, to be able to make the video.

Thanks for all your assistance but this is the final straw. I started many years ago using Sony Vegas but Magix has fallen behind. Other software has integrated diagnostics, log files and troubleshooting, regular bug fixing and updates.

Hi

If the short video is a general shot and does contain people in it who would want to be identified or contains confidential information eg your location etc, would you be willing to share it for us to test?

If so upload the file to Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive or a file sharing site such as Dropbox and share it so anyone who has the link can access it and post the link.

Hi.

Once a file is on the timeline the audio sample rate cannot be altered and is locked.

To alter the sample rate it must be a new project.
