2.10 v 2.4 GHz Movie Studio 2021 Requirements

Angelica-Carter wrote on 3/22/2023, 6:01 AM

Hi Everyone,

First let me say: Forgive my tech ignorance. I've been using Magix Video Easy for a long time to edit my videos. I'm considering upgrading my software to Movie Studio 2021 (since it's on sale) to try something new, and update my QUALITY of videos, and play around with more features.

So here's my question, I have the necessary RAM & 64-bit & Widows 10 requirements, but my processor is 2.10 and the requirements are 2.4. What does this mean? If I buy and download this new software, will there be a hinderance to my editing capabilities? Also, is there a way to upgrade my computer processor through a system update (is that a thing)?

Lastly, if anyone has a better Movie Studio recommendation for my system processor, besides Magix Video Easy, I welcome the suggestions. Thank you.

Kind regards,

AC

@Angelica-Carter

Welcome to the Magix user to user forums.

First, I'm not sure where you have seen MMS 2021 for sale (I'm not even sure there was an MMS 2021) but MMS 2023 is currently available, on sale here.

However, your question about your processor being 2.10 and the requirements being 2.4 is rather confusing, sorry! I assume you are referring to processor speed, is that correct? Magix own minimum requirements are for a processor speed of 2.4GHz so if you have one of only 2.10GHz then there can be no guarantee of the software working anything like "reasonably" for you; it will certainly be "slow"! And no, you cannot upgrade your computer processor in the way you suggest; the only possibility is to buy and and install a completely new processor but this is not recommended unless you are quite tech-savvy and know exactly what you are doing! It is most definitely NOT simply a question of finding a faster processor.

However, why not download the Free Trial version of MMS2023, install it on your computer and test it out? (The trial download link is on the page I linked earlier.) Unfortunately, I fear you may be rather disappointed by the software's performance on what sounds like rather an "old" computer, sorry.

@Angelica-Carter

Angelica, could you give us more details about your CPU/processor. The info will be in

Windows Settings>System>About. It will look something like this (in bold).

Device name    Asus
Processor    Intel(R) Core(TM) i5 CPU         750  @ 2.67GHz   2.67 GHz
Installed RAM    12.0 GB
Device ID    XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Product ID    XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
System type    64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
Pen and touch    No pen or touch input is available for this display

You can use the "Copy" button just below this info in Windows to copy it. When you do, remove the Device ID and Product ID lines just in case.

You will also need a 64-bit version of Windows 10. That is shown on that same About page (you can see it on the second bottom line of my report).

Don't be put off yet; my system is the oldest on the planet and it eats VHS captures for breakfast, without even a burp.

As far as capability goes, in my view it is a shame that Magix even sells Video Easy. For not much more money, you get so much more with Movie Studio. We recommend Movie Studio Suite because of the extra bits and bobs, but I second Jeff's suggestion; download the trial and give it a whirl. We also suggest watching the tutes to help work your way around MMS. It does appear to be quite different (and much better than) Video Easy.

All my forum comments are based on or refer to my System 1.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

Hi Jeff,

Thank you soo much for your response! It's crazy b/c my system doesn't feel old to me at all. It's even touch screen. But I know technology works very fast, and something new today may be outdated by tomorrow.

Correction: Movie Edit Pro 2021 is on sale https://www.magix.com/us/video-editor/movie-studio/specials/hidden/video-deluxe-old-version-special-offer/specifications/ NOT Movie Studio. I misspoke, my apologies.

Thanks for suggesting the free download of the MMS2023. I know anything at this point is going to be super advanced to my Magix Video Easy ( I downloaded it in 2015/2016), but I'm just nervous about being overwhelmed. I'm actually not sure what my next level of progression should be when buying editing software.

Thanks for the help!

Hi and Welcome to the user to user forums.

If you go to your Windows Settings / System / and click on About, it will tell you your processor manufacturer and model number. Also how much ram you have. If you could at least post those bits of information along with any graphics card information you may have (Do you have for instance a copy of the nvidia control panel on your machine?), then we might be able to advise more. A lot will also depend on the resolution (picture size) of the video clips you wish to edit. What makes the video clips etc.

You say you want to update (increase?) the quality of your videos.

Do you mean the videos you currently produce look far worse than the quality of the clips you use in the editor?

And that you want to play around with more features. Using effects in general normally means a slowdown in performance for lower end computers.

The 2.1GHz you quote is the processors base clock speed but may go higher. With the correct information we could check this for you. In general though it probably means a lack of multiple cores as well and may not be able to handle large image sizes.

You may have heard people talk about overclocking but that is normally reserved for specific types of processors. Some cannot be overclocked and even those that can be overclocked often results in instability of the operating system and a shortening of the lifespan of the components when running and personally I would advise against such actions.

Most editing packages out there now specify a sixth generation processor or newer (we are currently up to 13th generation processors) and older editing packages probably won't work with Windows 10.

The other problem is most software needs a code provided by the developer to activate the program to that specific user so buying a second hand copy of a program often means you don't get a working code with it and the developer will not give you a new code even if you offer to buy one.

The problem with other editing packages if you have got used to Video Easy is the workflow is often different and people get frustrated with trying to learn new workflows.

Some people who have been in a similar situation to yourself have with help bought a second hand machine that is capable for a few hundred pounds / dollars that has been capable of at least running the program if not as well as a much more costly solution.

Ray.

Hi

I tried your link and was surprised to see it is a genuine offer. I have never seen that or anything like that before. Movie Edit Pro 2021 is not quite as demanding as the current version but close and the version that @AAProds has managed to get to work on his machine as he could not get the newer versions to work as well.

Hi AA & Hi Ray,

To answer your device questions, it is a :

Device name    HP Envy m6 Notebook
Processor    AMD FX-8800P Radeon R7, 12 Compute Cores 4C+8G    2.10 GHz
Installed RAM    6.00 GB (5.59 GB usable)
System type    64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
Pen and touch    Touch support with 10 touch points
*And I have a sticker on it that says it's a AMDA FX 6th generation

AA- Thanks for giving me some hope! It's encouraging to hear MS may be even easier than Video Easy.

Ray- when my movie finishes, the "quality" is actually good. I think my transitions could be smoother when going from shot to shot, but I think that's user error. What I mean is, I want my videos to look/appear more modern. Ex. putting a timer on the screen, sharing the screen and adding in a 2nd video (overlay) versus just doing a voiceover, or putting a picture up on the screen while my orig. video is still playing (youtuber stuff)... hope I'm making sense.

Note the 2.1Ghz is only the base speed, and the machine will increase that speed if necessary.

I'd say that you shouldn't have any trouble running MEP 2021 for standard definition videos. If you work with 1920x1080 videos, you may need to use Proxy files. Overlays and related techniques are Movie Edit Pro's bread and butter.

For that price, I'd go for it. If nothing else, it will get you into the upgrade program for later versions if and when you get a new machine.

@Angelica-Carter

I think I found your machine specs here.

I am not as familiar with AMD based machines as I am with Intel based ones so I will leave compatibility comments to others who may have a better idea. Do make sure you have enough free C: drive space after loading the program for swap files to be created by the program. Maybe @johnebaker can advise on that. Also it would be good to have the source files on an external USB3 drive. You may need help setting the program up after downloading so don't be afraid to come back for additional help.

I am with @AAProds on this one the laptop should be fine with video resolutions up to and including 1920 x 1080.

Assuming the laptop has the 1TB hard drive using an external USB3 drive should not be necessary providing you can maintain at least 20% free disc space after all the projects video files are loaded onto the drive.

I only keep one or two 'work in progress' projects on my laptop. All others, finished or pending, are on an external hard drive.

If you do not have the free space then working from a USB 3 external hard drive is possible, however it must be plugged into one of the USB3 ports.

Hi all,

Only one problem with the MEP2021 offer - it's for the basic version. While it's a step up from the Easy version, it's missing some tools that you will quickly find missing. This applies to 2023 as well. I can't recommend the basic version and for the 5$ price differential in 2023, there is a world of difference.

Currently, the prices are very low for 2023 - 30$ for basic, 35$ for Platinum, 40$ for Suite. This is for New. I don't know what the upgrade price is as clicking on Upgrade wants to log me in to make the purchase.

I suggest that you go for the Suite Trial to see if it works on your computer.

Don't worry, you won't be overwhelmed. Basic editing is simple, but you want more and it's nice to be able to do more. Of course, you will have some learning to do, but it's worth it.
