VPX New version - end May 2018

browj2 wrote on 5/28/2018, 8:36 AM

There is a new version of VPX out.

https://www.magix.com/us/video/video-pro-x/new-features/#c829175

My year has expired and I have not received anything from Magix about renewing. Nothing shows up in the program when I check for updates.

New things: not much. However, there are many "More new features from previous versions."

In my case, a renewal gets me the plugins.

Comments on this "new" version?

They have changed the interface to be like MEP and added in the Store.

The only interesting feature is this:

"OPTIMIZED! Chroma keying It works! Object extraction Exactly like you'd imagine. Video Pro X's new object extraction algorithm makes it possible to recognize and extract objects from videos. Plus, the reliable antispill feature for removing green edges can now also be used in template mode. Chroma keying at its best!"

I would like to know if this really works. Does this mean that VPX identifies a moving image and gets rid of the background?

Other new features, J-L cut and Move object content button. We could already do the latter using Alt+Shift+ drag or either of the Trimmers.

The pricing is very high. For me, 250$ Canadian, or 200$ US. For the price, I am not at all impressed with the offering. I was expecting more, especially after the request from Magix about users' wish list. I suggested some very simple things, requiring no effort, like dumping Music Editor 2 and replacing it with Audio & Music Lab, and giving us a few of the essentialFX audio effects. I'll wait to see if Magix sends me an email offer.

The update window comes up every time I open VPX so I assume it will work with my serial.
I haven't been game to update until I have finished the current wedding I am working on.
It mentions 3 way color correction in the notes. Does anyone know what this means different to what we already have.
I just hope the update doesn't stop already functioning effects from working.
I will create a restore point before updating.
Doug.

I downloaded the update late last night as I am still within my free update period. The new version number is 16.0.1.236

It is a BIG download with the initial file being about 527Mb then the additional updates being 5Gb plus. I believe it also includes the full version of Music Maker, but haven't looked to download that yet as it took about 2 hours for the other downloads.

It definitely loads the previous version projects as, like Doug, I am halfway through a big wedding project. I tested the project and all the transitions and effects seem to be working OK including Mercalli 4. I'll check more thoroughly today though. I haven't looked at anything new though, but will have a quick look today while editing.

(continuing from this thread) For me it came in as a "major update". I had a version that was sold to me as X9, called itself 15.something in Help > About and installed itself in folders with "X8" in their name.

After the update all my personal settings are gone: jogwheel is gone, program and source window sizes, timeline preferences, back to NTSC instead of PAL, etc. etc. Any other installable Windows application I have ever worked with is able to retrieve that kind of stuff from the registry and .ini files if it detects that a previous version has been installed.

Other annoyances that remain in this version:

  • inefficient when you only do some simple edits. When I only stick together three 20 minute AVCHD takes and add one 5 second intro title it seems to re-render everything when I export it to exactly the same codec and container format, keeping my quad core i7 busy for 2 hrs. Is that really necessary? If there are no changes after the 3rd keyframe or so, why not just copy all the video and audio like f.i. Avidemux does? I must add that I'm sometimes impressed by the rendering speed when I have not left a single frame unchanged with heavy editing, color changes, stabilizing...
  • I like to keep all my project files together in one folder tree: sources, .mvp, export etc. Easy when archiving projects to - and recovering from - external storage. Video Pro X seems to be designed from a different philosophy and counter-works my approach 🙁
  • Transparent titles appear in a black box in preview, only after rendering they appear transparent. BTW each new version of Magix comes with more kitschy "impress your friends" titles and fewer "pleasant to read" titles.

. . . . . inefficient when you only do some simple edits . . . .

Without knowing your computer specification and what settings you have set we cannot tell exactly what the issue is, the most likely issue is that hardware acceleration is not possible or set for playback rendering, or preview settings a re not set for optimum playback - see this comment for general settings you can make to speed up rendering.

It would help a great deal if you put the following information in your profile signature so we do not have to ask for it when you post a new topic:

  • Computer specification - processor make/model, graphics card or chipset make/model, audio card or chipset make/model, RAM,  hard drive configuration and sizes?
  • Windows version and is it up to date?  Press and hold down the Windows key and the R key - in the dialog that opens type in winver and press enter.
  • Software full name and version number - as found under Help, About . . .

@MAGIX_Redaktion

I am a few weeks beyond the update service period, have received no offer from Magix, no reply to my ticket about this (and other things) raised on May 5 or thereabouts, and there is no news that shows up in VPX even though news is not hidden. Last year, the same thing happened, but the news popped up in VPX indicating that there was a new version and offering me to upgrade (renew subscription). I believe that I also received an email. Did Magix forget to issue the news?

I am not about to go to Magix.com to click on the Upgrade button without first being advised in the normal way (through the program) that there is a new version and that I am being given an excellent offer that I can't refuse.

Lastly, could you please, please do something about the timeout on this forum. We keep getting logged out, even after a couple of minutes or navigating to another tab in Edge and then coming back. There are many complaints.

@johnebaker I have no problem with playback rendering, that works fine. I was talking about the export of the final video in a situation where I have only added an opening title and the export format is exactly the same as the sources. I would expect the export to be much faster than in a situation where I have done heavy editing. But Magix seems to re-render the entire video from start to end even if nothing was changed after the 5th keyframe or so.

@willemb2

Further to what I indicated in the other thread, the ini file for the previous version may still be there, along with the windows arrangement set up - the .pmly files. Are you aware that you can save several windows arrangements using the top menu, Window Arrangement, Save? They will be pinned to F10, F11, F12 or by name, so you can quickly switch setups. If you have these and they did not get crushed by the new version, then you can copy them over.

For the files, make sure that you set up the folders correctly in the Program settings. These are stored in the ini file that I mentioned.

I presume that any links to folders that you had made under the Import tab were gone. I have about 35 of my own that I would have redo if the ini file cannot be re-used.

Apologies I misread your comment as referring to playback 😳.

. . . . the export format is exactly the same as the sources . . . . .

Do you have the Smart Render and Smart Copy options checked in the export dialog advanced settings?

Note for these options to work, and this is not 100% guaranteed even when they do, the export parameters parameters below should match the source video:

  • Average and maximum bitrates for video, and and bitrate for audio
  • Scan type - ie interlaced/progressive
  • GOP length and structure
  • Profile settings

Thanks, John! I cannot find Smart Render but I found that Smart Copy option and when I check that a "Smart render info" button appears. When I click that it tells me Normal rendering is enabled 😕. But I am reading in the manual about Smart Render and Smart Copy now and it looks like it is at least intended to work optionally as I expected to be standard. But as usual with Magix it will need a lot of experimenting and fiddling with settings. We're getting off-topic, so I will start a new thread if I cannot get it working.

I have updated on my second computer to test it first and first impressions are good.
Yes you lose all settings and need to re download extra content again like individual menu and fade effects, although all 3rd party plugins have been retained.
Settings don't take long to reset.
I have mentioned before I can't get my head around why so many use the rendering process.
It is much easier and faster to mix down a WMV or MP4 of the section you want to check and then edit all the clips together.
I guess everyone does things differently but it works well for me. I can then do more effects if needed and there is definitely no quality loss.
I think this update is going to work well once I get used to the new areas they have put things.
Simple things such as being able to mark title effects and alike so I can remember what I used next time is a bonus.
    Doug.

@browj2 Honestly, I don't know why you didn't get any notice. We definitely had promotions for the new version. I want to apologize for that! I contacted our support, they will answer your ticket and help you getting the new version.😉

@DugsBugs Your first impression was so good and now this. That's really a bummer. 🙁

What exactly happens? Did you report this to the support already?

DugsBugs wrote on 5/30/2018, 6:57 AM

I,m not panicking too much yet.
The freeze was on the test computer and since installing on my main one, things seem to be ok.
I think the problem stems from the Neat Video effect which eats up processing.
The freeze happens when I try to mix down to WMV and it sits there unable to click on anything so I need to do a force shutdown to close the program and if I didn't save in time, I lose the last lot of changes made.
Sometimes it even freezes when I try to save the project.
I was having the same issue in recent days with the previous version so I will wait to assess more.
    Doug.

DugsBugs wrote on 5/30/2018, 9:03 PM

    Just a warning Guys.
I don't know if it is just my system but I used one of my New Blue essentials effects today and the next time I opened the program and tried to open the effects tab, the dreaded red crash box came up and made the program unusable every time I tried to open it.
I had created a restore point before the update so I went back a couple of days but Magix could not open at all after that.
I tried repairing the install but that didn't work.
I reinstalled VPX which took me back to a very early version and had to do the current update again.
Everything seems to be back on track again but I am still a bit concerned and not game to use some effects.
It has crashed before when using Certain "Essentials" effects but it has never made the program unable to open.
These 3rd party plugins are supplied by Magix when you purchase the program so they need to make sure they don't cause such major melt downs.
I don't know if this is a problem with this update but it's worth taking caution over.

    Hi Mathius,

Thanks for looking into this. I still don't have any update/upgrade news from within VPX or a reply back from Support. The only way for users who are beyond the 365 update period to know that there is a new version, is to watch the forum or the Magix web site, so Magix is probably not getting many users paying for upgrades...yet.

    @Michal-MST

Or anyone, can you check to see if there are icons in the appropriate places. If no icons, then Magix forgot them; if icons, then something is wrong.

    Typical location in VPX is:

    C:\ProgramData\MAGIX\Video Pro X\8\VideoEffects\MovieLooks\Icons

where \8\ may be something different.

I'm seeing thumbnails for most templates, only not for Pictures and Colorfields. On my PC there is still only \8\ in C:\ProgramData\MAGIX\Video Pro X. All (sub-)folders in it have been updated 28-5-2018. No \10\. One level higher there is a \Video_Pro_X10\ with only two .ini files and one .dat

Many of the icon folders and their contents are still there in C:\ProgramData\MAGIX\Video Pro X\8\.... but not for Pictures and Colorfields.....

Icons are missing in C:\ProgramData\MAGIX\Video Pro X\8\pictures, but the actual pictures are all working normally I have the icons for Movie Looks, both in the programme data file and on the movie looks window.

    C:\ProgramData\MAGIX\Video Pro X\8\VideoEffects\BackgroundEffects\Pictures

Did this folder disappear in V10?

    @willemb2

Open the Video_Pro_X.ini file in the \Video_Pro_X10\ folder. You should see the paths to:

    ...AppData\Roaming\MAGIX\Video_Pro_X10\

This is where you'll find the files that I mentioned previously, except for V8 or 9. It would be interesting to know if they could be copied over, after making a backup of the ones in X10 first, of course. This would get you your previous settings. On the other hand, with the new layout, something may have had to change.

@browj2 C:\ProgramData\MAGIX\Video Pro X\8\VideoEffects\BackgroundEffects\Pictures is still there, but it has no /icons/ subfolder so maybe that's why the thumbnails are missing. But no idea if they were there in the previous version. I hardly ever use effects, I just cut and add some very dull transistions and (sub-)titles.

Thanks for the tip about the location of the settings files. But for a program I paid 400 Euro's for, I'm not going to mess with them. I created a support ticket. If I get an answer, I'll let you now here.

    @DugsBugs

Why do you use WMV or MP4 and not the Magix video format MXV? I use MXV for intermediates.

Have you tried nesting certain sequences rather than export-import? I haven't tested much to see the impact on the timeline if there are many effects on the original in the source movie. Using nested sequences makes the main movie timeline cleaner, especially with things like collages. Available only in VPX. If you're not familiar with this, you use one movie for the main timeline, but anything like a collage or some clips that would come together with a lot of effect is made in another movie(s) (in the same project). Then you simply drag the movie from the Project folder onto the timeline of the main movie. Any edits to the source movie get automatically updated in the main movie. Instead of a bunch of clips/photos/sound/title, you get one object on the main timeline. See the first image below. The object, Nesting1, on the main timeline is made up of several objects that are in Nesting1 movie.

I just recalled that I had trouble with one of my favourites, using Pixelan RiseShine on a title to get a glossy embossed finish. The problem was that I couldn't move it anywhere because the RiseShine effect stayed with the original location/window of the text. Moving the text box away moved it out of the effect zone. I put just the title with the effect in a second movie, dragged the movie onto the timeline, and moved the nested sequence, that is, the title movie, wherever I wanted without losing the effect. This just solved a long-standing problem. I keep forgetting about nested sequences.
