Unable to open/move Movie Clip to Timeline

Xenofex2 wrote on 1/15/2017, 1:36 PM

I have used MEP now for a number of years although must
admit not very often since purchasing a new computer (Windows 10) last May. However in all
the time I have used various editions of MEP I have never had any problem with
moving a movie clip onto the timeline for editing. I do have now and seek
advice as to how to solve, please.

A recent short movie clip taken on a Panasonic Lumix camera,
a camera which I have used many times before to take movie clips, but I cannot move it
to the timeline to edit. I have both ‘MEP 2016 Plus’ and ‘MEP Premium’
installed and tried both programs and in neither can I add the clip and have got a
different message in both. (One incidentally says that ‘Quicktime’ is not
installed yet am pretty sure that this is now not supported by Apple and if
installed, should be removed.)  See screenshots below.

Just checked, and movie clips taken with another camera, and
some received from our daughter that were probably taken on her phone are all
okay and can move to the timeline. However previously edited movies in a previous
MEP program also will not open in the timeline and so could not re-edit should
I wish.

Hi

. . . . am pretty sure that this is now not supported by Apple and if installed, should be removed . . .

You are correct - there is a serious security hole in the Windows version which will not be patched. Apple is only supporting the MAC version of Quicktime

MEP 2016 and MEP Premium will open certain types of MOV files without Quicktime being installed.

MOV is a container file format which can hold video and audio in many different formats.

From testing with some MOV files both programs will open MOV files that contain AVC video.

Use MediaInfo to analyse a clip that does load and one that doesn't.

Change the view to Tree view and scroll down to the Video section

You should see something like this:

Video
ID                                       : 1
Format                                   : AVC
Format/Info                              : Advanced Video Codec
Format profile                           : Baseline@L5
Format settings, CABAC                   : No
Format settings, ReFrames                : 1 frame
Format settings, GOP                     : M=1, N=15
Codec ID                                 : avc1
Codec ID/Info                            : Advanced Video

This file loads into both MEP versions

For comparison this one does not load

Video
ID                                       : 1
Format                                   : JPEG
Codec ID                                 : jpeg
Duration                                 : 10 s 43 ms
Bit rate mode                            : Variable
Bit rate                                 : 25.6 Mb/s
Width                                    : 1 280 pixels
Height                                   : 720 pixels
Display aspect ratio                     : 16:9
Frame rate mode                          : Constant

Never come across that MediaInfo program before but have just downloaded it. Could not (quickly) find the 'Tree View' as suggested but clicked on something that seems to have worked because my video has been converted to ...(???) .... , and it now runs in MEP but ... there is no sound. Play the converted video in both Windows Movie Player & VLC and I have sound so it has not been lost in the conversion. Playing around with it in MEP I also notice that there is also only one pictorial image, the first, along the timeline.

Could this be because I am using the free/trial version of MediaInfo?

Think will call it a day now and look at it tomorrow, with a pair of fresh eyes.

Hi

. . . . my video has been converted to . . .

MediaInfo does not convert files, it only tells you what is inside them, it also works with audio files as well.

. . . . .Could this be because I am using the free/trial version of MediaInfo? . . . .

MediaInfo is free software and the full version there is no trial.

The Tree view is under View in the menu bar.

It is interesting and puzzling that the videos will now import.

George, as JohnEB writes, MediaInfo is free and certainly does not make ANY changes to any file it reads! The correct download page is https://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo. Regrettably, I think you have been "deceived" into downloading and installing a PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program) that may not be at all "advantageous to your computer", to put it mildly! My first job would be to remove it completely, which may be easier said than done.

I think your original problem may well be to do with the fact that you do not have Quicktime installed. http://windows10portal.com/download-quicktime-player/ is a link to a page where you can download and install QT specifically for Windows 10, a "safe" version which does not install the browser add-on which is the real security risk with this program. I have, and use this version quite regularly without any problem. My Canon EOS camera produces video files in MOV format; without it I cannot view/edit those files in VPX, even though Canon's own supplied software "EOS Utility" includes a dedicated MOV codec, but it is clearly designed only for use with Canon's own software.

On reading John's follow up I was just coming to the same conclusion. Yes I clicked the link on the first page and now realise that I have installed Wondershare Video Converter. Thankyou for that link to a 'safe version' of Quicktime and will now install that and then uninstall Video Converter and run my Magix PC Check & Tuning 2016 to hopefully clear out any unwanted extras.

Sorry, I have just gone to the link to download the 'safe' version and am confronted with two areas to click 'download'. (Moving the screen to the right and only now see a third alternative place to click to download.) I actually chose the top left link but the installation has been blocked by my anti -virus. Reading the page it does seem that this version is specifically for Windows 10 so assume I must find a way and over-ride my Anti-Virus? And should it be that top left link?

George, the message at the bottom centre of your screenshot ("Do you want to run or save...") is pointing to the file you need to download. Although it is currently hidden by the warning message from Norton, there should be an option to "Download" on that same message box.

Clearly you need to be able to bypass/temporarily turn off Norton in order to complete the download. I assume this can be done(?) but have no idea how. I have to confess my opinion of Norton is not good! I last used it about 20 years ago but got rid of it (with a vow never to use it again) when an antivirus "update" managed to write off my registry, necessitating a complete reinstall of Windows!

Seems now that it is not Norton but my paid for program, Malwarybytes Anti-Malware. Over-ride the block go to install and blocked again so in a perpetual loop. Am now contacting Malwarebytes for help.

Hi

. . . . Never come across that MediaInfo program before but have just downloaded it. . . . . now realise that I have installed Wondershare Video Converter . . . .

I was a little confused as to how you came to install Wondershare when the link I gave you was for MediaInfo - a direct link to the download versions, however it is now clear you went to install Quicktime.

. . . . I have just gone to the link to download the 'safe' version . . . .

What link and where?

There is no safe version of genuine Quicktime for Windows which should only be downloaded from the Apple Quicktime website.

Downloading from a 3rd party website as shown in your image is very risky - you do not know what has been done to or by the 3rd party installer.

. . . . Malwarybytes Anti-Malware. Over-ride the block go to install and blocked again so in a perpetual loop . . .

I suspect that the installer you downloaded from the 3rd party site will not be allowed to install no matter what you set in the override, however I can find no positive information on whether this is what Malwarebytes can do.

I would also agree with Jeff about Norton, however for a different reason - I have seen it reduce the performance of many Windows computers significantly ( by as much as 50% on laptops ) and is very resource hungry.

John EB, like you I'm not entirely clear what George did to download that Wonderfox program, but I don't think it was anything to do with Quicktime. Somehow I don't think he realised that you had provided a direct link, hence my posting of it. I think he may have searched for Media Info (rather than MediaInfo, without the space) and hence landed on the site from which he downloaded the "wrong" program. (All the above is pure speculation on my part!!)

Also I have to say I cannot agree that there is no safe version of genuine Quicktime for Windows.  The site I linked is one of the few I would trust to offer a version of QT which does not include the (dangerous) browser plugin but which is otherwise safe for Windows users. Certainly, for me, prior to installing the Win 10 version the link leads to, the .mov files files from my Canon EOS camera would not play smoothly, if at all.

As to George's problem with Malwarebytes blocking the download/install, I have a suspicion this may be because of the reputation that QT has earned for its "dangers". https://support.apple.com/en_GB/downloads/quicktime is the "official" Apple page though whether the version there includes the plugin I don't know.

Hi Jeff

There appears to be a lot of conflicting information about Quicktime and what is safe or not eg

On uninstall side:

The Department of Homeland Security‘s U.S. Computer Emergency Readiness Team have advised anyone using Quicktime to uninstall it.

Apple also advise uninstalling when they announced that the Windows version would no longer be supported.

On the install side:

A Magix competitor and other security sites advise a custom installation and to install only Quicktime Essentials.

By default the latest Quicktime installer installs Essentials and the player and removes the plug-in and other components as shown below

I prefer to err on the cautious side when installing software, particularly where there are known issues, and especially from unknown and unverifiable sources.

Whilst waiting for Malwarebytes to come back to me I find it interesting to follow this thread, and wonder, just wonder! Interestingly I now cannot see the the download sitting in my ‘downloads folder’ so guess it must be a combination of both programs, Malwarbytes & Norton that is blocking the installation.

To follow on from what Jeff has said about Quicktime,  a double check online and it agrees that it is just the Quicktime  Essentials’ part that one wants to install without the media player and web browser component. But then I guess the majority who encounter this issue will have problems, like me, actually getting an install. So wonder is there any alternative?

Convert one’s movie clip into another format that gets accepted by MEP? The program I incorrectly installed yesterday seems to have done that but I get no audio when played in MEP although have just checked and when unlinking, there actually is an audio track albeit with no sound. As mentioned previously, play this same converted movie clip in either VLC or Windows Movie player and it plays okay in both, and with sound. So had it played alright with audio in MEP it would have solved my problem. That program was a trial version of ‘Wondershare Video Converter Ultimate’, and although it means having to pay
to get the actual program and so another expense, having looked at the Company, it does seem a reputable Company, and if it finally works in MEP this may solve any security worries in trying to install a version of Quicktime.

Hi

As well as the Wondershare converter there are several others which are worth looking at:

AVS Video Converter

MovAvi Video Converter

Nero Recode

All are paid for and I have all of these - my preferred one is MovAvi - so far it has converted every MOV to MP4 without the need for Quicktime being installed, is fast and gives good quality results.

Could not resist a peek. Tried your suggestion and downloaded the trial version of MovAvi and yes it works. okay it is only the trial version at the moment and so has the watermark but at least I know it works. Will try another clip tomorrow to check but it seems as if it is the solution, and if so no worries with trying to install Quicktime. So all being well I can buy it tomorrow and sleep tight tonight. Problem it seems solved. Thankyou both.

George, glad to hear your problem is resolving itself. I too have Movavi Video Convertor and would completely agree with John that it is one of the best. Because I have QT installed I don't routinely use it to transcode MOV to mp4; it slightly worries me that even one additional conversion step is likely to degrade the original quality, even extremely marginally.

Perhaps I'm being ultra-careful, but then I do have QT installed!!😉
