I am experiencing exactly the same problem with Movie Edit Pro 2016 Plus. Has worked fine ever since first installed until last week and now when I try to drag any audio files into the time line the programme just freezes and will not respond to any commands. Strangely it is doing exactly the same on both my desktop PC and my laptop. Tried uninstalling and re-installing Movie Edit Pro but makes no difference. All updates have been installed. Tried dragging music files that have previously imported to MEP without problems and these cause the freezing issue too.

The desktop is a Windows 10 machine 64 bit with 16gb RAM, 3.9ghz processor and 300gb free disk space.

The music files are 128kbps, WMA files with a sample rate of 44.1khz. As I say the same files have always imported to MEP projects without any issues before last week.

Further to my earlier post I also contacted Magix Tech support and await their response. I have, however, found a couple of references online to Magix users with Windows 10 experiencing crashes after Windows Security update KB4013429 was installed. The timing of my problem with the programme certainly coincides with the timing of that update. Has anyone else come across this?

I have not seen the problem to which you refer but I do have that Windows Security Update installed. I don't currently have any suitable audio files with which I can check whether my machine and VPX will also freeze if I try to import them. Is it possible for you to post even a short section of one of the affected files so that others can check whether this is potentially a problem created by the M$ update?

Thanks for your response. I tried to post one of the music files but the files in question are wma files and it seems that's not an acceptable format for uploading audio files on the forum as they have to be mp3.

Interestingly though, having seen that, I dragged an mp3 audio file into my project timeline and it didn't cause a crash! So maybe a possible workaround is for me to convert any wma files to mp3 before dragging them into the timeline.

It is odd though because I have been importing wma audio files to projects in the past without any problems.

Hi Rob.

No worries about not being able to post the file - though one slightly "cheating" method might be to change the file extension on one of your wma files to mp3 and then try to attach it - anyone downloading it would simply have to revert the extension to wma and then test it.

However, given that it is only wma files that seem to cause the problem (presumably if you convert a wma to mp3, rather than just change its extension you can use it without problem?) then your original idea of something within that Security Update being responsible gains even more credence.

Use a sharing site such as Dropbox to upload the audio file to and post the link here.

Posting to the forum, Youtube, Vimeo, SoundCloud etc can convert the files - we need an original wma file unconverted to test with.

Since my previous post I converted one of the problem wma music files to mp3 and it imported to the project without any issues.

Thanks for the audio file.

MediaInfo confirms your bitrate/samplerate of 128kbs / 44.1 kHz which is acceptable to MEP.

Loading into MEP 2016 does not cause any issue here.

One issue I used to have with a much earlier version of MEP was mixing audio file types eg mp3 and wav. The program would sometimes crash when changing from one format to the other.

Trying to find the cause of the wma crashing may be difficult. Is MEP 2016 patched up to date the last version is 15.0.0.107

Yes all updates to 15.0.0.107 are installed.

I tried setting up a new project with only wma files in it and it still freezes, whereas ones with mp3 or wav files or a combination of the two work fine.

Looks like I will just have to convert any audio files I want to use in projects from wma to mp3 in future (or just rip them in mp3 format when the cds are copied to my pc in the first place).

Just an update to say the issue has been solved for me thanks to the very helpful people at Magix Tech Support. Whilst starting by saying that tech support is not normally available after 12 months from purchase they said as a goodwill gesture they would try to assist. After trying a couple of things that didn't work they then suggested checking my Windows 10 PC and laptop's Updates History to ensure update KB4015438 had been installed. Even though I have automatic updates set and even though when I check for updates it tells me I am fully up to date (and there are no failed updates), there is no trace of  KB4015438 in History. So I downloaded and installed that update manually, restarted the PC and now  WMA files import to Movie Edit Pro 2016 Plus without any freezing or other issues. 😄

So thanks very much Magix and thanks for the various suggestions on here.

Perhaps KB4015438 is a fix for the earlier Windows Security update KB4013429 that caused problems?

There certainly have been a lot of instances recently where MEP / VPX have gone haywire and it has been linked to Windows 10 updates installing (or failing to install correctly).

One common one was the timeline playback marker freezing and playback becoming very choppy which I think was caused by a graphics driver update that Windows tried to install. In the last patches for MEP (2017) and VPX(8) there has been a change listed that will hopefully make these Magix Editors more resilient to MS updates in the future. Probably why Magix Support were keen to help, having been swamped with similar problems.

Another thing to emerge in the forums is to make sure you do a Restart to Windows periodically as by default in Win10, a Shutdown does not fully shutdown the PC in most cases because Fast Boot is enabled by default, and this only puts the PC into a Hybrid sleep not allowing some updates to install. I have disabled Fast Boot on my rig and it has not increased start up or shut down times appreciably.

I was having a similar problem with MEP2017 -- adding an .mp4 (with no audio track) resulted in a complete freeze of my computer while displaying a message at the bottom of the screen saying it was initializing the audio system. I'd recently installed the 2017 update, and who knows what Window 10 was doing in the background.

Resolution was simple! I archived a good third of me HD files when I realized that I had only a few MB free on a 1TB disc.
