How can I change the active color of a menu button? Mine is turning black, very ugly. How do you change the behavior to the 'active' or 'hover-over' color to green or red or blue, something nice?
Can one make the button invisible when it is not active? That is a basic feature of menu design.
Really terrible stuff. You guys are kindergartners. I want my money back. Guess I'll have to use Adobe Encore 2007 forever, since that is apparently when 'state of the art' went extinct.

Excuse me? Why waste our time with your questions? You have not even explained what menu you're talking about. Do you mean the user interface menu at the top of the screen, toolbar buttons or the buttons in the burn interface? If for the DVD/BR menu, which buttons? You can change the colour of the text. You can export the buttons to the external editor and change them there.
Why should we waste our time trying to figure your problem? You expect us to guess everything?
Did you update to the latest patch? Did you download and install the additional content under Help, Install extra content, then the button Download extra content? Did you bother to look in the manual?
I apologize for my outrage. It does appear that this software will not be a match for me. The legacy Adobe Encore has been made unavailable after 12 years without an update. I am in search of something that could do some of the same things, such as a custom shaped button. When I imported my own custom shape Movie Edit did not allow me controls to change the 'hover over' color. When I tried to make my own shape in the Photo Designer there seems to be no way of making it work because when you try to delete whatever is the existing background, it just turns black and trashes the transparency. The manual was of no use.

I suspect Vegas DVD Architect (DVDA) is what you are looking for, I use it for creating discs using video exports from MEP.
DVDA is far more sophisticated than MEP, and Video Pro X (VPX) for the creation of BD and DVD discs ie features such as:
In other words you have almost total control over the menu system, actions and features of the disc, however the downside you have to do a lot of pre-preparation if you want animated menus, intermediate/transition videos to play before the selected movie.
Here is a quick example of my current project menus.
The example has a simple background at the moment, however as you can see the menu item highlights are unique for each menu item, additionally, not shown in the example, the chapters are set to return to the calling menu after playing, both customisations are not possible in MEP.
I have also created an AVCHD export preset for MEP which enables Blu-ray discs to be created without DVDA re-rendering the video.
BTW - I do not work for Magix so apologies if this sounds like a sales pitch.

Ditto what John EB mentioned about DVD Architect.
Video Pro X has an additional feature that Movie Edit Pro does not, that allows you to export to a psd file and modify most everything in Photoshop or Xara. Then you import the modified psd file. It is somewhat labourious, but it allows you to modify the buttons in great detail or create your own. That said, I would not buy VPX just for that. MEP and VPX are principally video editing programs and the Burn features have not been improved much over the years. There are many templates, not all that great, and you only get them if you download and install the additional content.

Thank you so much for this feedback. DVDA looks to be exactly what I need by the demo John provided! All this stuff is extremely reasonable compared to the subscription services I've been using. No qualms whatsoever about the "sales" pitch.
If I may impose again, what then would be the complement to DVDA on the video editing side? Specifically the current project I'm looking for something offering 5.1 surround on the soundtrack.

I use Movie Edit Pro or Video Pro X, with a custom AVCHD export preset which enables DVDA to create Blu-Ray without re-rendering the video once the projects settings are set to match.
DVDA has its own forum here as do the alternative Magix video editors - Vegas Studio and Vegas Pro which have specific export options for DVDA - they also being ex Sony products as DVDA was and taken over by Magix.
Steve Grisetti has tutorials on getting started with DVDA - link is at the top of the DVDA forum.
A useful feature of DVDA you may want to look at is multiple audio track selection and audio muting.
