OT: Book about MEP

terrypin schreef op 24.05.2014 om 19:28 uur

A lot of the questions we get here about MEP could be answered instead by studying or referring to the PDF Manual. But if like me you find it hard going in places, with few practical examples, then there's an independent book I've just started reading which others might like to check out. It's Magix Movie Edit Pro 2014 Revealed, by Jeff Naylor.

Could well cut down the time some of us spend answering queries here!

Hey Terry,

Thanks for the idea.  Yes, I am one of those.  Have you read it and is only focused on MEP 2014 or would it apply to MEP MX?

Thank you,

George

Hi George,

I've only read about 60 pages so far. But I reckon that with the exception of a few features (like proxy editing) it's just as relevant to MX, and indeed several earlier versions.

Hi Peter,

Even in that first 57 pages (of about 540) I found a few features mentioned that I'd never got around to using. And glancing ahead I'm looking forward to working through some practical examples to see if it they prompt any improvements in my workflow.

But for most users (not necessarily advanced video experts like you) I'd suggest reading these first 4 of the 13 Contents pages which I've now obtained from the author, Jeff Naylor, for this purpose.

Hi Terry

Thanks for posting the link. It certainly looks comprehensive but of course it doesn't give me any idea how informative it is. Where did you get it and how much is it to buy? I tried putting the title into Google search but it didn't appear.

I will be interested to see if it improves your MEP experience.

Cheers

Peter

Thanks

Terry,

Thanks

You hadn't  mentioned what version of MEP you're using or planning to use, but yes, I'd guess the great majority would be relevant. And judging from my experience of the last few versions of MEP up to 2014, probably largely even identical in detail.

On the other hand I don't know your MEP skill and experience level. For an accomplished video expert with long experience of previous versions such as MEP 2014 and looking for detailed instructions on the use of the unique features of MEP 2015, then obviously you won't find them in this book.

Did you use the 'Look inside' link to study the contents?

BTW, I was interested by your comment that the 2015 manual is "...over 320 pages long". That's around 30 or 40 pages shorter than the 2014 manual. Out of curiosity I checked the last three versions:

MX: 398
2013: 343
2014: 353

Thanks again Terry,

I am currently using a trial version of MEP 2015 Plus and debating which version will be the most useful to me.

I have used other editing software for a number of years but have no previous experience with MEP.

I am always inclined to buy latest issues of books and software and in this case the user guide from Jeff Naylor is for an earlier version - MEP 2014. Hence for my question to you here.

The PDF Manual with 2015 is 373 pages and quite informative (once I have understood the nomenclature !) but after reading parts of Jeffs' book I believe it is written in a less complicated style and, providing there are no plans to issue an updated version. for MEP 2015,I will purchase the 2014 issue.

I have many copies of software and user guide books relating to video editing which were superseded within weeks of purchasing, and is the main reason for my hesitation.

Kind regards,

Bill Robinson

Well, that's certainly  "...over 320 pages long"! And the sort of length I'd expect.

I've emailed Jeff, but I'd greatly doubt he'd be planning to publish a 2015 version imminently.

Hi Bill - Terry gave me a shout :-)

I'm currently working on a version of my book for Magix MEP 2015. As I'm working through I am finding that it's almost just a case of changing the screenshot to match the new program GUI. So the 2014 book should still work, but if you can hang on I fully intend to get the book released in the next month, other commitments allowing and if I don't stumble across any major roadblocks - I have to test all the examples.

Hope this helps :-)

jeffjn schreef op 16.10.2014 om 17:05 uur

Update - the more I get into MEP 2015, the more GUI differences I'm finding. So although the 2014 book should be decipherable, it won't be ideal.
