Download speeds of content.

I am wondering if someone can tell me their download speed as reported when updating content using their Magix download manager .

I am only getting about 196KB/s, (downloading Slideshow Maker Styles 994 MB) even though I am on a confirmed connection speed of 50MB/s (should be getting 5.7 megabytes a second). At that rate I should get all of my content in about 57 years. Personally I think this might be a Net Neutrality thing.

I remember last time, this was also happening when downloading Sound Forge Audio Cleaning Lab 2. At that time, I did contact Magix support and they were kind enough to privately send me a direct link. This downloaded much faster via my browser than I've even been able to achieve with the Magix download tool. Personally I think Magix need to rewrite their content deliver system to make multiple network connections to the server.

What I am after at this stage is for someone just to let me know what speed their Magix download manager is achieving.

There are probably a lot of people downloading updates at the moment with the new version of MEP being made available. Try downloading the rest at a different time or leave it a few days. That folder has always been a slow download. You can leave it to download in the background as well.

I have been getting these low speeds even when there have been no updates released..... Does not matter what time of day, week, or month. Background or foreground..... I still only ever get around 196KB/s.

It could also depend on the route between you and the server and whether all of the download is on one server. It's never a direct connection.

I was downloading most of Movie Edit Po at 35Mbps.Only one folder slowed. Have you checked your internet speed?

I always check my internet speed 50MB/s. It's definitely external to my router... ...and yes, I know there are many routers between my router and Magix's router on their server...and the whole download process it only as fast as the slowest router....

Even if I do contact Magix support, I would still get my files before they respond. It would still be nice to be able to get a faster direct link without having to go through their download manager... Not sure of your location, but you would be going through a different set of routers - hence your download speeds from Magix are much better....

Hi

. . . . I always check my internet speed 50MB/s . . . .

Internet connection speeds from your ISP are measured in Mb/s - megabits/s, MB/s is megaBytes/s - 1 Byte = 8 bits. - using mb/s is a marketing departments dream - it sounds much more impressive.

The download manager displays the download speed in MB/s - 196KB/s = 1.5 Mb/s.

The download speed you are seeing is a little on the slow side, however this does depend a great deal on who your ISP is, they may start throttling speeds at busy times of the day, type of connection to the ISP's network, if you do not have a dedicated connection how many users are sharing your ISP local connection to their server network and the demand on the Magix servers.

Yes, I know the difference between megabits/s and megabytes/s... I am definitely getting the files an an abominably slow rate from Magix..... My ISP does not throttle speeds - if they did I would be getting slow downloads from every website...

Magix (a German company) is slow, while IK multimedia (An Italian company) is at 5.7 megabytes a second). I just tested this while downloading 650MB file from IK while the download from Magix is taking place.. The IK file still came down at 5.7 megabytes a second. The issue is definitely with Magix.

I consistently get the same slow speed from Magix, every single time - it never varies.

I am currently downloading the extra content for MEP 2021 and download speeds are 4.5 - 5 MB/s - so from (East Midlands UK) here it is not Magix.

It's terrible here, too (Thailand). I wanted to download the movie edit pro update and also the photostory demo at the same time. I had to stop the upgrade after 3 hours. It was jammed at 27%. I thought photostory was blocked because nothing was happening, so I restarted the download........... it will take all night at this speed! On top of it, there is this crappy pc check and tuning program downloading first that is impossible to uncheck!

. . . . It was jammed at 27%. . . . .

Check in the download dialog if the middle button is displaying Continue - if so something has interrupted the download - pressing Continue will continue downloading from where it was interrupted.

When you eventually get the full download and start the install, select Custom install and you should be able to uncheck the PC Check and Tuning program if not uninstall when the install is complete.

I did manage to work out the actual URL (using the log files) that the Magix downloader connects to to download the full Movie edit Pro Premium 2021 installer. I then used a download manager to download it using that URL. It still came down at a snails pace.

This Download manager is capable of speeding up downloads by creating multiple connections to a given server - most of the time this does one work. However, with Magix servers, it only permitted one connection - and that is at about 250 kb/s - so even if Magix downloader allowed multiple sessions, it would make a difference.

Magix really need to improve their servers and the Download manager. You guys in the northern hemisphere must be getting the faster speeds. Now so much down under (Australia) - and Thailand (according to another respondent)

CubeAce schreef op 26.08.2020 om 09:32 uur

Could be. It took, and normally takes, around 15 minutes to download all but one folder from Magix and for me it is always the same folder. Sometimes that folder goes as slow as some of you are reporting. Other times faster but never above 1Mb/s There are probably different servers across the world holding these files and could be dependant on which area you select when downloading.

That would require a Fibre to the home/premises (FTTH/FTTP) 1000 Mbit/s connection - possible here in the UK however expensive and not available in all areas.

But even with such heady speeds from your ISP, how often would you expect to see that from someone else's international server?

My ISP offers up to 900 Mbits/sec and I have fibre outside my house but a guy across the street pays for a 100 Mbit connection but says he regularly runs the test to the ISP server and is only getting around 30-40 Mbits, so I wont be going there anytime soon. On top of that I would lose other telecom services like single line dual number, and alarm monitoring.

Hi Peter

Is the guy across the street on copper cable or shared connection?

I am on FTTC with a short coax connection to the house, cabinet is close by, 120 Mb/s tariff and I get 115 Mb/s download, upload is slower at 10Mb/s, TV and phone comes down the same cable. In 2021 we should be upgrading to 1GB/s FTTH - not holding my breath on that one.

The neighbor is on a shiny new Fibre connection but he reckons the ISP is throttling it. They put it in our street last year and I had a huge battle with them when, after coming all the way down our street underground, they decided to go up the telegraph pole and around the corner cutting neatly thru our sea view......Grrrr!

I am happy enough sitting on my 15Mbit/sec VDSL connection which is a little more snappy after everything quit a couple of weeks ago and they found one of the pairs from the exchange was shorted.

Now they are trying to sell me 4G Internet..... but blow me down I'm in a dead spot for that as well, and another neighbor who has that can only get 25Mbps download.

Anyway I only really need speed for Magix down loads and has been discussed, it seems it is always slower that the connection speed.

Hi John. Peter.

I'm not sure how much of an advantage having higher speeds is over a certain point unless you have several members of a household needing a connection at once. Unless you use a Torrent system it seems nigh on impossible to ever download anything at one's own download speed. I rarely ever get a 35Mbps download speed. Most of the time I get 20Mbps if I'm dealing with a major server. Upload speeds do however upload at their predicted speeds most of the time. Except YouTube and Flickr although Flickr has improved a bit. For streaming high quality video it's pretty good but not much else. My MEP download went well. All but one folder came in at around 15 minutes. I let the rest download in the background.

Also the cost of a higher speed connection seems disproportionate relative to the speed increase.

I think John has the sweet spot for a single user at present although I wish they would increase the upload bandwidth. I would pay more for that than a download speed increase.

@CubeAce

Hi Ray

. . . . I think John has the sweet spot for a single user at present . . . .

Just a lower 'contention ratio' - the ratio of the potential maximum demand to the actual bandwidth , I dont know the exact figure however I do know it is on the low side, you may find where you live, that ratio could be a lot higher up, where I use to live many years ago it was as high as 50:1.
