Where do I create my FTP password?

smalldairy wrote on 3/22/2013, 1:51 PM

I am trying to upload the pages I've so far created in Xara Web Designer Premium, but my Magix password is not accepted.  Do I need to create a separate FTP password?  If so, where?  Xara says to use the same password.  Somewhere on Magix I found a page where it showed my new domain (smalldairy.info), which says it is unassigned.  It gives me the options of 'redirect' or 'album homepage.'  This is a new domain so I don't think I want to redirect, but I don't understand what 'album homepage' means.  In addition there is a second domain smalldairy.magix.net.  What am I supposed to do with that?

Hi

. . . . (smalldairy.info), which says it is unassigned . . .

You need to assign this to the root of the website ie smalldairy.magix.net

Check your FTP settings against the example under Publishing your Website in the installed pdf manual .

Thank you John, but I still am unclear what I'm supposed to do.  As mentioned above, when I click on the Assignment button, the only options it gives me are 'redirect' or 'album homepage.'  Would you explain, step by step, how to assign smalldairy.info to smalldairy.magix.net?

Whose manual?  Xara's or Magix?  I did follow Xara's manual precisely.

BTW, I just saw a bald eagle this morning!

Hi

You need to have online web hosting - see here http://www.magix-online.com/uk/.

Once you have done this you should find the option to assign the domain to the hosting space and then set your FTP settings to this.  Instructions for setting this up are in section 2 here

Okay, we're getting there.  The step involving web hosting was left out of the instructions.  I assumed that web hosting came with the domain name that I purchased and didn't realize I had to go through the shopping cart again.

Once I set up the web hosting, I was able to assign the domain and upload my site -- to somewhere.  When I click on the Explore Web Space button in the Web Properties/Publish I now get a list of files instead of an error message about my password.  However, when I try to go to the web address itself, I still get the construction page.  This is true of both my purchased domain (http://www.smalldairy.info/) and the free one (http://smalldairy.magix.net/public), which are both assigned to FTP.  What am I missing now?

Thanks for all your help and patience, John.

Hi

Is the homepage file called index.htm or index.html ?  - I no longer have Webdesigner installed and cannot remember the file extension.

If it is called any thing else, then the filename must be changed to index with the extension (the bit after the . ) that Webdesigner creates.

YAY!!  That did it.  I had changed the file name (not having been told not to!).  I changed it back to index and uploaded again.

Thank you SOOO much!
