Sounds like your computer is staining.

Test it this way, if you start the computer fresh from a restart, open the program and load in the avi file that is unedited, and play it back... if it plays back OK then we know the codec are ok so it must be something with the edits.

You might try exporting it now to see if the lag is still apparent
