When I import a 16:9 movie, it changes it to 5:4.. Why?

It also 'squashes' the image from the left and right, leaving people tall and thin.

Can you be more specific? Tell us exactly what happens when you import a file? What dialog boxes come up, and what do you click on when you see them? What are your video settings, and what format are the files in that you are importing?
