What is the purpose of the icon that appears at the top of the MMM 16 screen that indicates the number of bars

Can someone explain what those icons at the top of the screen that are moveable and indicate the number of bars are at that particular position are used for? Is it only for navigation or are there other purposes for them?

I figured this out on my own. Those icon are simply there to allow you to work on just certain portions of an arrangement. You place them at the front of the arrangement and at the end of it to work on the whole song. It was something too simple and I should have known that.
