Website partial view good then "under contruction"

thecaptain wrote on 5/16/2015, 3:41 PM

OK, this isn't working.  I have uploaded the start of what will be a very large website just to see if I can get it to upload.  Xara Premium 10 still gets the error "ftp: cammand PORT failed" so I worked around it.  I exported as htm and then uploaded from Magix-Online.  All files are there, plus some I didn't think I needed, but them on anyway.  When I review the site on my computer locally in the browser (Chrome) it works fine, but up on the server it will only show the 1st two pages and then I'm told that it's under construction, and nothing shows up!

This is becoming very frustrating!

Please help!

Hi

Looking at the page name where you get the error - which is a 404 error 'Page not found' redirect - I can see a single space in the name - ie the gap between the red and blue highlighted text - this is not allowed

http://thecaptain.magix.net/public/chapt_6 silver_springs_adventure.htm

Try renaming the page with and underscore wherever you need a space as you have in the rest of the name

Thanks for the tip, and I had to completely rename the file for Premium 10 to change it all.  However, I am still getting the ftp: command PORT failed error when I try to publish using the FTP client in the software.  Any idea as to why this is happening?

Hi

The only thing I can think of which may cause this is the long page names you are using.eg

chapt_a_silver_springs_adventure.htm  is 32+3 chars long - the  .  (period) is not counted.

I find if difficult to believe that the softwares FTP can only handle 8+3 characters only, however testing will prove otherwise.

Try creating a page with the name only 8 characters long + 3 for the file extension eg an abbreviation of the above page name could be

      chassadv.htm

and see if this will upload using the softwares FTP

I tried the reduction in size of the .htm files, and still wouldn't work.  I noticed that some of the files the software created has way more than the 8 characters.  So, I don't think this is the problem.  I have used a client FTP and there were issues there as well.  With Filezilla it makes the connection (sometimes), retrieves the file directory, and begins the upload one file at a time.  Then, it all of a sudden will loose connection and won't connect again?  I also try Bitkinex, and it tells me that the maximum login has been reached.  Not sure what that means?  Is there a maximum number of times I can connect?

Thanks for the help!  I know it's a little hard tryin' to fix problems such as this without havin' your hands on the keyboard!  I'm sure we'll figure it out and maybe save someone else the aggravation!

This sounds like your Internet connection is dropping, you are getting timeouts on the uploading or the laptop is losing WiFi connection if it is on one.

What type of Internet connection and speed do you have and how is the laptop connected to your router / modem / adsl box?

It may be the speed of the connection.  We are at the end of a line and our speed is about 1.5mb/s, so there may be more timeouts than the FTP allows.  I have a laptop 64bit, w 8gb ram 2.4Gz CPU Intel Core connected via Wifi on a private modem (just installed).  Are there any settings I can make that will allow for more wait time?  Something in the registry?  I am continuing to build on, but the more I add the more complicated the uploads become.  I basically have to delete all the files on line and reload all the files off my computer to get the site to work.

Note:  I found one problem wit Xara Premium 10 in the auto creation of "New Page".  It will automatically add a space and a letter to the end of the previous file name.  Since spaces aren't allowed on your server this causes a "Under Construction" page to come up.

Thanks for your patience!
