@terrerad another G9 user. I've found shooting video with the camera, really great. I've been using it for several years now. And if it dies, I'll get the G9II since I have some M43 lenses and don't want to lug around FF glass.

As for low light, I've shot in a lot of different settings, and the results have always been good. But HLG I haven't touched since I mainly have enough light to shoot with.

Here is a video that I did in basically "auto" mode since I was tired, and the place was crowded. Netflix decided to have the premiere release of Rebel Moon in Lublin, Poland where I live. Glad we went that night. It got really windy and that was the only night the balloons were flying. I had zero chance to set anything up and all is hand held. I should have brought my monopod...and I didn't set up focusing as I wanted. Again, crowded and too tired.

Hi @Reyfox ,

Impressive low light footage! Lublin looks like an amazing city. I want one of those giant "planetary" balloons!

Hi Tony

. . . . Impressive low light footage! . . . .

Agreed, another question re the G9, what is the longest continuous recording time for 4K UHD 50 fps?

From the specs it would appear to be 10 mins, do you have any experience of this?

I will be looking for a possible replacement for my Sony AX53E, all camcorders I have looked at, Sony, Canon, Panasonic sub €1500, do not support 4K UHD 50fps.

If I go for the more pro style cameras I would not be able to video in some places, I nearly got kicked out of several because of my AX53 !

Thanks

@terrerad yes, Lublin is an amazing place to live and raise a family. I love it here. The video was shot with the kit 12-60mm. All of it was shot along the promenade leading to Old Town. At the end, it was Lublin Castle where the balloons were flying.

Info on the actual video. UHD 4K, bitrate 150Mb/s, 4:2:0, 8bit, 50P. No post processing or noise reduction. Just the actual footage. I used the on camera mic.

@johnebaker, yes, there is a limit to the amount of recording time for the very old G9 in both 50P and 25P. The new G9II doesn't have that. I rarely shoot consistently for any long period of time. I haven't done an event video in ages.

I've thought about going full frame with the Lumix S5II, but the size and weight of the glass would be too much to carry around. When we travel in Poland visiting everywhere, we travel by train and take our bikes. I have to carry a DJI Mini 3 Pro along with DJI Ronin gimbal in addition to the camera, batteries, and lenses. All this stuffed into a Lowepro 400AW.

This is how bikes travel on the train

Hi Tony

Thanks for the info, your video reminded me of our trip to the Nürnberg Xmas market some years ago.

Recording time, size and weight are important for me, with respect to weight I get my FDR AX53 + external mic + 3 batteries, DJI Action3 + charger/battery case + 1.5m selfie stick, small pocket Digital Voice Recorder and a powerbank, in a Lowpro Trekker Lite SLX120 - just under 2.5kg.

@johnebaker if only I could only have to carry 2.5kg!! The DJI Ronin SC weighs 1.3kg by itself. The drone weighs basically nothing. But camera, lenses, batteries, monopod, some first aid stuff does add up.

When we bike to the train station to start our trip, I give wifey a choice, either the mountain backpack (it looks much bigger and heavier than my camera backpack) that holds clothes, sneakers, battery chargers, personal care products, etc., or my camera backpack. She chooses the mountain backpack every time.

We've biked hundreds of miles through Poland visiting the different places. Even biked to Germany from Poland.

The reason for the G9 is because I needed a hybrid camera that shoots quality stills and video, and yet, be a little lighter overall than my old Canon DSLR. I have a Lowepro Slingshot 102AW that is my everyday bag. I carry the G9, a couple of lenses along with wallet and assorted "stuff". It's my "man bag". It goes where ever I go.

Hi Tony

. . . . It's my "man bag". It goes where ever I go . . . .

Same with me, however, I call mine 'bum bag', other stuff for days out goes in my backpack, an old, and very comfortable, Berghaus Freeflow 3.

. . . . lighter overall than my old Canon DSLR . . . .

Know what you mean, especially with a 70 - 200mm EF zoom on, image quality is superb though!

@johnebaker

I gave all my Canon gear to a young lady who I know that likes to shoot stills. She had a 12MP Canon and I gave her my camera along with 3 lenses and an official Canon carry bag for the gear. She loves it. Next, to get her to do some video editing! I have to get her laptop specs to see if it can handle it. She's seen my videos and photo slide shows... hmmmm.... that might work! Slide shows!

I switched from Canon to Panasonic because of video. I loved the Canon still images. But Canon lagged behind Lumix in video. And what they initially came out with, was a joke. This was back when the GH4 was announced.
