VPX 14: Drag-and-drop import of movies and photos is disabled?

Galaxy wrote on 6/23/2022, 9:05 AM

I'm trying to drag videos and movies from Windows File Explorer into Video Pro X 14 (trial version), but I'm seeing a forbidden icon (a circle with a slanted line through it). That is, I can't drag media files into VPX anywhere -- not onto the timeline, or anywhere else.

Hence, the only way I can import media is via the Import tab, which is very inefficient. My media files come from various locations, and navigating to them in the Import tab is a cumbersome process.

In contrast, in my old version of VPX (15.0.0.56), I can drag movies and photos directly onto the timeline from Windows File Explorer, including jpg and mp4 files. This is very convenient; it saves a great deal of time and bother.

Has the capability to import media via drag-and-drop been permanently disabled in VPX 14? Or am I doing something wrong? Can I enable the drag-and-drop feature somehow?

Thanks.

@Galaxy

Hi,

I have no problem dragging and dropping into VPX14 (20.0.1.159) using Windows Explorer or even Magix Photo Manager Deluxe. I can drag/drop onto the timeline or into the Project Temp Folder.

Why you can't, I have no idea. It may be some restriction of the trial, but I doubt it.

That said, I rarely drag and drop videos into a project using WE. I find that the Import tab is just as fast in most cases, and much faster when I have created links to folders in the Import tab. When I start a project, I create several links to the folders to be used so that I can get to them quickly. Also, I trim most clips before putting them onto the timeline - can't be done using WE.

Occasionally, I drag/drop into the Project Temp Folder subfolder for material to be used later so that I don't have to go hunting.

Hi

Try restarting your computer - Windows button. Power button, Restart - you may have a Windows update waiting for a full restart of the computer.

If VPX is run in the Administrator context (as when you right-click and choose run as administrator - it could also be set by shortcut properties), then it us normal for any program to disallow drag&drop from File Explorer run in user context.

You can check this by open Notepad and drag a file to the program. In User (normal) context it will open the file, but in administrator context it will not.

@johnebaker

Try restarting your computer ...

Earlier today, I closed and restarted VPX 14. After that, it allowed drag-and-drop importing. I'm not sure if re-starting the program is what solved the problem, but maybe it is. Thanks for the suggestion.

Very interesting! Perhaps I started VPX in admin mode this morning - I don't remember - but if so, maybe that's why restarting the program helped.

Thanks!
