Video X6 playback marker freezes

gmlotkow wrote on 12/5/2014, 5:31 AM

Recently the scroll tab, playback marker or verticle line on the timeline freezes, and does not update while the editing is in process.  I can continue to edit, but I have no real time indication where I am on the timeline.  If I save the project, quit, then start the program again, the playback marker will again work for a short while, then freeze again.  Becomes quite frustrating.

Hi

What is your computer specification, Windows version and is it 32 or 64 bit  and the video resolution / format that you have on the timeline ?

Hi

Something has changed since this post .. . . . . Using X6, with 4 videos in the timeline (1920x1080 .m2ts), edited with transitions, each an hour long, I can jump anywhere on the timeline, and play from that point, without any hesitation. Zoom in anywhere on the timeline, adjust scrubber, play instantly. . . . . .

Has any new software been installed, drivers been updated or replaced (in particular the graphics card drivers)?

Also check / try the following:-

Perform a Disk cleanup getting rid of temporary files, etc.

Check no other software is hogging resources, using up processor time or memory.

Shut down any software that is running and is not necessary.

HTH

True-

I had problems with my audio from my mother board.  Using Music Maker/Video X6, I would create a disc, then play it on my home entertainment system, and hear stuff that was unacceptable. (noise and static)  So I upgraded my computer with the Soundblaster Z card.  I fear that may have been my mistake.  I remove all the software, removed the card, cleaned the registry, still have the problem.

Computer is still super fast, and works well, but I lost the functionally of that playback marker.  I got a ticket open with the Magix support.  Did the "syscheck". and sent it in.  I can't seem to restore my pc earlier than the time I put the Soundblaster card in.  What's up with that?  Also, as you noticed in my earlier post,  maybe I did have a problem then, but did not notice it, I don't know.

Back in November, when I added the Quadro Pro graphics card, I opened a ticket, stating I was concerned about hardware acceleration with the new card.  Magix answer was "On the export there is not much we can really do if the graphics card can not be used for the processing. Most of this will still be done on the CPU instead."

Did you, by any chance, use CCleaner?

Try doing a program reset, if this does not work then try reinstalling VPX and selecting the Repair option if offered - if not do a full reinstall.

I, too, would be interested in knowing why johneb asks about CCleaner, since I run it regularly, without apparent problem!

However, two things about the information Greg has supplied deserve some comment, I think:

  1. Many people, me included, steer clear of Norton at all costs!  My own experience, several years ago, is of a Norton update completely writing off my registry, with the result that the OS (Win 98 in that case) had to be reloaded from scratch.  Not a happy bunny!
  2. Soundblaster are not noted as manufacturers of quality, high-end sound cards.  I'm not flaming them but, especially since you run MusicMaker, and hence presumably want the "best" sound you can achieve I would look, when you can, to changing that.  Creative, the makers of Soundblaster, are generally considered as makers of cards for gaming, not for serious audio.  OTOH, Creative Professional (aka EMU Audio) cards are absolutely top-notch (if you can find one and can find the drivers to make it work in a "modern" PC).  Even the EMU external USB audio interfaces (given the absence of EMU PCI/PCIe cards) are a whole better than Soundblaster!

Hi Jeff,

I'm old enough to have once been a satisfied user of the DOS-based Norton Utilities. But when they became an early Windows app (I forget which OS) I too had a very similar experience to yours. So, although it was admittedly many years ago, anything 'Norton' is a no-no for me now.

Hopefully we'll hear from John if there is some serious issue he's encountered with CCleaner that thankfully hasn't affected my XP PC yet!

I don't have Video Pro but I'm guessing it may have an Optimize Display button, bottom right. That fixes another problem with the playback marker in MEP, so it's worth a try here.

However, as Jeff implies, it does sound like a Soundblaster issue.

Hi

@ Terry

Re CCleaner

I have had many probems using this software to clean the registry - these manifest themselves mainly with MEP, MMM and VPX 4 - loss of registration and some loss of functionality which is only fixed by running the installers again and repairing the installation.

It would appear that some registry keys are removed when they should not be.

Re Norton 360

I too would second Terry's comment re Norton 360 this is a resource hungry suite of software - I too dumped Norton/Symantic AV suites many years ago when it became bloated and, for me, caused significant slow down of my computer.

Re audio card

I agree with Jeff, modern Soundblasters are nowhere near the quality they were a few years ago.  Two good brands of audio card for music  are by M-Audio and Asus (Xonar series)

Re VPX playback

. . . . playback marked worked well 10 minutes, saved project, playback marker stopped working immediately. . . . .

Have you tried resetting the program to default settings?

I did reset the program to default setting several times without any improvement.

I obtained the x6 software thru a download, and have a valid serial number for it (version 13.0.5.9), but when launching to reinstall, I only get the trial version, then it will not continue, because it knows there is a later version installed.    I will try to clear that up with Magix support tomorrow, when the resume there support.  Maybe I can get the link to the full blown software again.   I do have a ticket open and they are evaluating my syscheck file I sent them last Friday.  I removed the soundcard, cleaned the registry, and now working without the sound card.

Lets remember, it's not only a problem with Video Pro X6, but with Music Maker 2015, and Movie Edit Pro 2015.

I very much appreciate all the support from you forum members.  Thank you very much.

Hi

FWIW I have seen coments from experienced members in the German forum who say to avoid CCleaner.

I use Magix own PC Check and Tune software, that has a Reg cleaner and defragger as part of it's tool set, as I figure that they wouldn't promote something that screws up their own program!

Norton - bloated.

I also remember problems of some sort with Sound Blaster drivers.
