First looks:

  1. The Dual language (multi-language) output to DVD or BD still does not work. They said it was on the list and thought that it was done, but it wasn't.
  2. Reusing transitions from the saved list now works.
  3. New bug found: Creating a mask opens Xara, in my case Xara DPX10, but usually not in animation mode. Then, copying the frame does not advance the video, thus moving the masks to follow the video cannot be done. Moving the masks around and copying frames looks ok, except that the only mask location remembered is the last one. Exiting back to VPX6 gives a static mask. I tried this in MEP2014Plus which opens Xara DPX9 instead of X10 for some reason, and the animation works fine.

Anyone else have anything to report?

Hi John,

I haven't installed the update to VPX6 yet.  You know, when you have a workflow that works...

I'm wondering if 13.0.5.9 fixes the problem of native DSLR footage importing too dark?  This would save a ton ot time transcoding to Mpeg 2 or other before importing.

Hi Seamus,

I hadn't tried any DSLR footage until yesterday and it worked fine. I did not have much black in the scenes and they did not appear to be crushed, according to the display. I wouldn't use brightness to bring up the dark parts, only HDR Gamma with blur adjustment.

I have a Canon 650D but I don't use it much for video.  I prefer my Canon HFR21 for ease of use. I haven't compared quality but I will as I filmed with both cameras simultaneously yesterday.

I have not had any new problems with the update. Some of my problems were resolved and there are only a few to go, none of which cannot be worked around.

So I suggest that you update. It shouldn't change your workflow at all, unless one of the features that was fixed helps out (saved transitions in particular).

Let us know if there is an improvement

HI Seamus

OT however . . . . native DSLR footage importing too dark . . . .

Without knowing which DSLR you have it is difficult to advise, however check you cameras video settings for the following if they are available:

  • Gamma
  • Auto Exposure (AE) shift is not on or set to 0
  • Backlight correction is off.

HTH

Hi Seamus,

From your profile, you are using a Canon T3i (600D), correct? Mine is the T4i, which is pretty much the same camera.

I used the Automatic setting for the video footage that I took both indoors (without additional lighting) and outdoors and the videos look good in VPX6. What setting did you use on your camera? Manual is not to be used.

Take a look at this thread about using the monitoring instruments, in particular the waveform monitor and the use of Brightness, Contrast and HDR Gamma.

Hi Seamus, just to add to what John C. B. has posted; I also have a Canon 600D and import of Full HD video to VPX5 is great, certainly not losing any brightness.

As Johnebaker posted, I think you need to check your camera's settings carefully.

BTW, if you want really full control of particularly the video functions of your camera (and are prepared to "hack" the software - taking great care of course!!) I can personally recommend Magic Lantern software http://www.magiclantern.fm/
