Video Pro X Keeps Freezing And Crashing

Antoine-BBTV wrote on 2/9/2022, 12:37 AM

Hi,

I have an hp omen with a nvidia gpu and intel i7 processor. I've used magix video edit pro for a while and just updated to video pro x13. The video pro x keeps crashing as soon as I start editing video. I just freezes and will not move forward. Anyone have any advice or know what might be causing this. I really like the product and want it to work for me.

Thanks

Hi

We need more information:

Computer specification and program version, see this topic for what is required and please quote processor and graphics card make/model in full - I would suggest you put this information in your profile signature so we do not have to keep asking for it.

Are the graphics card drivers up to date?

A screen shot of the Program settings, Device options tab.

What format and resolution video sources are you importing - download and install MediaInfo and analyse one of the clips and post the results, see this tutorial, if you are not familiar with MediaInfo, on how to setup MediaInfo and analyse a video clip.

The amount of free space on the hard drive(s) you have.

The graphics card drivers are up to date. Attached is a screen shot program settings requested and media info for example of imported clip.

Side notes. I can open projects that I previously created in movie edit pro on Video Edit Pro X. I can export those projects fine through Video Pro X but it freezes after a few minutes any time I try to edit video on the time line. It also freezes when I try to import any kind of file onto the time line. I have to open task manager and end task to close the program each time.

Magix movie edit pro still works perfect on this same computer. It's just the new version of video pro x that I purchased that is not working correctly. I'm hoping we can get this working because I really want to take advantage of the fusion 3 to maximize my graphics card. I really appreciate the help.

Thanks

Hi Antoine.

I note you have 24GB of ram.

Are you using two or three sticks of ram? Are they matching sticks of ram?

If three sticks of 8GB try removing the odd stick. Your memory could be stuck in single channel mode or there may be a mismatch of memory modules.

Put the three Hardware Accel dropdowns onto CPU and try it.

All my forum comments are based on or refer to my System 1.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

@CubeAce I have 3 ram sticks all 8GB and they are the same. I will look at removing one of them, but I hate the thought of losing the extra ram power. Thanks for the insight.

@AAProds I just switched them all to CPU and this has helped with the stability a TON!!! I can now play and edit as normal without it crashing.

Update: I set the Import to CPU, Processing to Nvidia, and Export to Nvidia. This seems to give me the best stability (even a little better than I was getting in MEP before I upgraded to Pro X). I'm guessing having all of them set to NVidia was overloading the GPU causing it to continually crash? This seems to be a solution to my problems. Can't thank you enough!! Glad I'm able to make this product work for me now.

Hi Antione.

16GB of ram is more than enough to edit up to 4K resolution unless you use a ton of additional effects.

For 8K editing 32 GB should be required as a minimum in my opinion.

Having an odd stick will mean that stick is running in single channel mode while the other two will be in dual channel mode. Whether that is enough to trip up a part of VPX while in use could be debatable but I would be curious to find out. If any one stick has different specs the entire set of ram will run at the lowest specification of that ram stick.

It is also possible that running a project from an SD card could be a problem as large files are read in chunks and the transfer speeds may not be up to the task. Try placing the files onto your second SSD but even then depending on the SSD there could still be problems. Again adding those specification can help us work out things like likely transfer speeds.

Your system is potentially more powerful than my own and I am not suffering any of your reported problems.

Potentially with the correct setup you should be getting better performance on playback and export than I am.

Ray.

Hi

To add to @CubeAce comment

. . . . . running a project from an SD card could be a problem as large files are read in chunks and the transfer speeds may not be up to the task . . . .

VPX also writes support files to the same folder as the video files and this may be a cause of the crashing if the access permissions of the card are not set to allow writing by other device apart from the camera. Ideally as Ray has commented they should be on an internal drive for best file access performance.

@CubeAce and @johnebaker Thanks for the advice. I import from the sd card into the project and the files are stored in the project folder on an external hard drive. So it was my understanding that running my projects this way I'm not running directly from the SD in the editing process. It's using the saved files in the project folder which most of the time I use proxies. This does raise a good question though. I never considered the impact of the hard drive speed on performance when editing. The files are all being pulled from a usb external hardrive. I may need to check the speed on my external drive to see if it's ideal for video editing because I use large files mostly in 60fps. Thanks for all the help guys.

I am having the same problem as @Antoine-BBTV ... I purchased the software a week ago and now My program keeps freezing after the new update... The only way to close it is by pressing Alt-Control-Delete. It is an amazing program due to workflow but this freezing is HORRIBLE!. I am currently running a 7Tb,12 Core processor, and 128 GB of ram.

My graphic card is an Nvidia Quatro K5000 which is kind of old. I recently brought a new graphic card which comes in Soon let's see if this problem gets fixed...

NOTE: Also I got this error before... I also noted that The sessions that frooze have [Resize/Position/Rotation] Effects or either [Section] Effects... Clearly a Software Issue

CubeAce wrote on 5/6/2022, 1:03 AM

@GrupoLosFicos

I think you will find it is the lack of support for the latest drivers for your Quatro card that is causing the problems as nvidia stopped support for most Kepler based graphics cards in October 2021. While a great (and expensive) graphics card, the Quatro K5000 cannot make use of latest Direct X 12 3D shader instructions needed for rendering images within the program.

Until your new card arrives try setting the programs settings to use Microsoft WARP for both rendering and export.

Nice card.

Slightly older than my own 1650 Super and has Pascal Architecture which for now at least is still being supported with nvidia driver sets. Can handle Direct X 12.1 fully and is about 48 % more powerful than my own card with plenty of vram and a 352-bit memory interface. The problem may one day come around again once we get to Direct X 13 or above but for now we are both safe I think 😉.

The experience should be a good one. Possibly even dealing with 8K video.Just make sure you run the latest drivers. Get them from the nvidia site. Studio or game ready drivers, I don't think it will make much difference which you choose. Both seem to be in use by one forum member or another. You just can't run both on the same machine.

You don't mention whether you have an AMD or Intel processor. Intel tend to behave better with the program at the lower and of the CPU ranges but with that graphics card it may not make much difference.

Let us know how you get on and please put the full specification of your machine into your signature which you will find in your personal account page on this site. That will help others help you sooner in the future without having to play 20 questions to get to the crux of the problem.

Ray.

@CubeAce Thanks. But never mind it keeps freezing... I installed the new graphic card it worked for 2 days now it keeps freezing again. Same when I first installed the software... and an UPdating box keeps popping me telling me to install a whole bunch of stuff I don't need. Maybe that is triggering the Freeze. I paid 200$ to have it free SMH... I might start working on Premiere instead.

@GrupoLosFicos

Another possibility is not enough free space on the C: drive for Windows to swap page files around while the program runs. I never let my C: drive have less than 20GBs of free space available. Fragmented drives can be another cause. Never start a project on a fragmented drive.

If it was working but now isn't you have additional problems.

Like I said earlier, without full specs and as much info as you can muster we guess at the most common causes first.

Ray.

@CubeAce sup Cube. it is not a HardDrive Issue I have 3 HD’s with 7TB. It seems to be a software Issue. I read many Reviews with the same issue. I love the software but it performs bad when handling heavy (Avi Formatted videos) and causes <Irresponsive> Freezing. If I use <MP4 Formatted videos> then it Takes a while to play each content but does not Freeze. [Ctrl+Alt+Del] has become my Best Friend.. In Fact I can press it Now with my Eyes Closed 😎😂😅. Anyways When I press [Ctrl+Alt+Del] it shows that the software is only using 4% of my CPU processor power. I have 128GB of Ram/12 Core running. When the software Freezes it continues to say the same thing [Irresponsive]... I also noticed that in the [Ctrl+Alt+Del] Bar the Software [Magix Video Pro x 13] has a drop down menu. Inside one of the drop down’s, it has a process running called “Installer” or “Downloader” *Cant recall exactly.. might all the extra things running in the background cause it to crash? …Probably… Anyways, once I close the whole Software by Force ending the Task via [Ctrl+Alt+Del]. I restart it.. I get the same Installer Box.. Telling me to install a whole bunch of Crap causing a slight lagging in the Startup time a Bit. I wish there was a way to Disable that.. Once i re-open the project…I let it load.. then cross my fingers that it wont freeze once I start moving stuff around.

MY SPECS
MAC TOWER 5,1 (Windows 10) 2 x 6 Core [12 Core processor]
GeForce GTX 1080 TI 11GB [Graphic]
128 Gb of Ram..

I Ran heavy Protools Audio sessions with Many plugins.. hitting 80% of my CPU power and never Froze. compared to this Software that uses 4%… and goes Unresponsive constantly.

Hi

. . . . MAC TOWER 5,1 (Windows 10) 2 x 6 Core [12 Core processor] . . . .

Which Xeon processor model number is this?

. . . . When I press [Ctrl+Alt+Del] it shows that the software is only using 4% of my CPU processor power. . . .

This is normal given the Xeon is a dual processor in one package and would suggest you are not using a 4K UHD or 8K video source.

. . . . I Ran heavy Protools Audio sessions with Many plugins.. hitting 80% of my CPU power and never Froze. . . . .

Unfortunately this is not relevant as audio processing does not require as much 'horsepower' as video processing especially if your source video files are 2.7K or higher resolution, the Protools Audio is using the CPU for processing, whereas Video Pro X will use the GPU for the majority of processing, and exporting, depending on the format and codecs in the video clips and export format selected - the difference you have seen between the K5000 and the GTX 1080Ti clearly indicates the GPU is being used

. . . . MP4 Formatted videos . . . .

MP4 is not a video standard, it is a container file format - to determine which codecs are being used, download and install MediaInfo and analyse one of the clips and post the the entire data, see this tutorial on how to setup MediaInfo to give the required data for posting, and analyse a video clip.

@johnebaker Good Day. So what is the point having having an option to switch Hardware Acceleration between CPU, Warp, and GPU… If it Freezes on all of them…I still use Magix Music Maker Deluxe 2004.. 2004!! and it doesn't have this issue at all.. even with Huge videos.. the only reason I stoped utilizing the “2004” version was because it doesn't let me convert to “MP4” and Larger files looked a little Blurry… do to Age.. Please Release a Simplified Magix Version.

Hi

As I said above what happens with audio programs has revelance to the issue with Video Pro X (VPX).

. . . . So what is the point having having an option to switch Hardware Acceleration between CPU, Warp, and GPU… If it Freezes on all of them . . . .

The workstation you have with the Xeon dual processor and the K5000 graphics card was originally designed for CAD and other applications typically used in research and graphics design, and has been repurposed to use Windows, IIRC it originally had a MAC OS installed.

I suspect the issue is with the dual processor Xeon and/or Windows 10 scheduling which is why I asked for more information on the particular model and the MediaInfo data of the video source files you are adding to the timeline.

An additional setting which may improve the issue is to set the GPU to be used in Windows settings, System, Display, Graphics settings, Graphics preference option for Video Pro X to the GTX 1080 Ti (High performance) - also ensure the three options in VPX are also set to the GTX 1080 Ti

I have a desktop with an AMD CPU and NVIDIA GPU. Over the last yeat I have found Video X getting more unstable. The current version is unusable as it crashes with minutes I commence editing. My video cameras have not changed in years so the video files are nothing new to the software. Within minutes of editing it locks up solid. Cannot even do a Windows /D to get back to the desktop. Once it locked up during playback. Yet the sound played back to the end of the video. Still had to do a Ctl/Alt Del.
