Hi

To replace the old site with the new, I would suggest you Export the entire new site to a folder on your PC, and test it thoroughly.

Then use a 3rd party FTP program, such as Filezilla, move the old site to a new folder on the web server and then upload the new site's files and folder from the local folder on your PC to the server.

Once the new site is thoroughly checked and working you can, back up the old site to your PC and remove it from the server.

If there is an issue you can put the old site back until the new site is fixed.

The server does not care whether the homepage, ie the index file, has a .htm or .html file extension, so long as only one file called index is present

Hi

. . . .  once i have uploaded it at the end of the web address /#xl_xr_page_ then index instead on just /index any ideas please . . . .

This is correct as you have created a 'Supersite' which only has one page index.htm, scripting changes the content, however the page name is not displaying correctly

The index page on the site is:

http://wroughtironworks.co.uk/#xl_xr_page_index

when it should be

http://wroughtironworks.co.uk/index.htm#xl_xr_page_index

For the other pages only the end name changes as shown below

http://wroughtironworks.co.uk/index.htm#xl_xr_page_about

In the Page gallery is the home page call index as shown below?

hi i have just read your last message again how can i get rid of the #xl_xr_page as i will lose all the previous seo that i had done if that makes sence

or do i need to make another website with out it being a super site not that i know how i made it a super site in the first place

@richard-biddlecombe

Hi

I am seeing odd behaviours when accessing the website using the following URL's:

sitename.co.uk  or  sitename.co.uk/index.html I get the old site created with Serif WebPlus X7

sitename.co.uk/#xl_xr_page_index URs  I get the site made with Web Designer

sitename .co.uk/index.htm (note the file extension) I get a 404 error - page not found - in other words the index.htm page that is created by Web Designer is not there.

It looks like the 2 sites are occupying the same root folder and the index.htm file is missing.

If you export the site from Web Designer to a new folder on your PC do you you see the index.htm file and a folder called index_htm_files as shown below?

. . . . how can i get rid of the #xl_xr_page  . . . .

Once the site is sorted on the server ie the old site moved from the root folder where it is now and only the Web Designer site is uploaded with its index.htm file and folder, there is no need to remove the #xl_xr_page part of the URL this is normal for the one page site (Supersite) template you have used.

There is one issue that needs fixing - from the Shop there is no way back to the rest of the site.

To minimise disruption to your site I would recommend swapping the sites as follows using an FTP program such as FileZilla:-

  1. On the server, delete the index_htm_files folder and its content.

  2. Upload the index.htm file and folder called index_htm_files you exported to the folder on your PC above.

  3. On the server, create a new folder and give it a name eg old_site_backup.

  4. Move all the old site files, and any folders belonging to it, to the backup folder leaving just the index.htm file and the index_htm_files folder and its contents.

The site should then work normally using the domain URL shown below, if not you can put the old site back from the backup folder.

http://wroughtironworks.co.uk/

When visiting the site you should see the homepage URL in the browser is

http://wroughtironworks.co.uk/#xl_xr_page_index

Edited: I have a small test site here using the same template if you look at the browser address bar as you change pages you will see the #xl_xr_page_index change to the appropriate page name - this is correct.

A one page website does not affect the Search engine bots from reading the page links, keyworrds etc.

. . . .  i will lose all the previous seo that i had done if that makes sence . . . .

What SEO have you done to the old site? In the new site did you add the keywords as in the old site?

. . . . do i need to make another website with out it being a super site . . . .

I would avoid doing this on a site created with a different template, the amount of work involved correcting issues such as text fonts, image sizes and placements can take as long as creating the site from scratch.

Sorry for the long answer, I hope this helps clarify what needs to be done and how.
