Unable to update Pro X

DugsBugs wrote on 9/8/2017, 5:47 AM

Can anyone help me.
I purchased Pro X and installed it last week and have had endless problems with it compared to Pro X7.
I tried updating today and it cancelled my serial with no option to register online in the help menu.
When I click on "About" it just shows "0 days still remaining" as if it's a trial version and I can't do anything with the program.
I have sent an email to Magix support today about all my bugs but I would like to know how to update even though I don't think it's going to fix the bugs.
Doug

Hi Doug.

I see you found how/where to create a new post!

First, I think we need to know a lot more information about your computer, its software and the specifics of the problems you are experiencing, especially if the update difficulty is only part of it. Can you read this post and supply us with all the information requested there?

Second, this tutorial is very useful in helping to resolve all kinds of problems with installation and operation of Magix software, even if those problems are NOT the result of upgrading your operating system to Windows 10. Yes, one possible resolution to your problem may well be to completely uninstall and then reinstall VPX.

When you say you have sent an email to Magix support today, did you send it from this web page? I ask because I know that support sometimes do not respond to emails sent direct. They much prefer you use the support ticket route from that page; they then have a clear audit trail and can carefully monitor all support requests.

Please post back and let us know how you get on.

@emmrecs
Well Jeff, I just wrote a long reply, clicked post, and it went nowhere.
I'll wait to hear from support.
It was done properly with a ticket number but it will probably take a few days.
The program is back to when I first installed it but I can't update.
I will just keep using X7 until I find a solution

Hi Doug,

There is a definite problem with the forum website logging people out. Before clicking on comment, always do a Copy all of what you wrote so that if you get thrown out, you can log back in and post your comment. Most annoying! I was thrown out trying to post this message.

I had a similar problem and you have to uninstall VPX8 and any patches, but not in the normal manner. Download and run this tool from Microsoft; I was directed to it by Magix support:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/17588/fix-problems-that-block-programs-from-being-installed-or-removed

Run it once to remove VPX8, then reload it and run it again to remove any VPX8 patches. Normally, an uninstall will do this, but for some reason it doesn't, hence the tool.

Then reinstall VPX8 or 9 using the link in your email from Magix when you purchased.

Once activated, before doing anything else, go to Help, Update online and do that. Then you can install all of the additional things. I presume that when you did it before, you kept the files so that you don't have to download them again. Once done and working properly, you will have to Help, Install extra content, and install Main Concept from the first screen. If you did not keep the files, then you first have to click on Download extra content and download everything. This time, select the option to keep the installation files on your hard disk, in case you have to do it again.

Good luck!

@browj2

Thank you for the info John.
I tried what you suggested but it didn't work for me. No surprise really.
Even though I go through the uninstall process, the old info is still stored in the registry so I need to get rid of that as well.
I created a restore point before trying your way which is lucky because when I updated I lost my serial again so I went through the process again but I couldn't re register.
The program is back to the 15.0.0.56 with a serial so I will leave it there,
I don't need the updates because they haven't addressed my rotate and crop issues anyway.
I am having to select Direct X 9 to use HDR Gamma which I have never needed to do in any version.
I am still using VPX 7 along side and it does everything I ask, I would have been nice to advance but so far X8 has been a pig.
I am in communication with Magix support and I have sent a syscheck report so I'll see what comes out of that.
I don't know if it's a windows 10 issue in my new computer or not because that's when all the grief started.
Thanks.
Doug.

Hi

. . . . I tried updating today and it cancelled my serial with no option to register online in the help menu.
When I click on "About" it just shows "0 days still remaining" as if it's a trial version . . ..

Did the updating actually complete and then the above appeared?

If so, at the start of the update process the dialog that asks you whether you want to install the update now or later. This dialog has a check box asking you if you wish to transfer the program information. If this is not checked the update will revert the program back to a new unregistered installation.

Also carry out the following check:

  1. Browse to the magix.com website
  2. Click the My Account icon top right of the home page
  3. Login using your email address and password
  4. Select My products from the left pane, you will be taken to a list of your registered products.
  5. Check VPX has been activated and registered for your computer.
  6. Check that the serial number is the correct one.
  7. You can also deactivate this registration and try activation from within the program again if you wish.

Hello John.
Yes, the program did 2 separate updates and then the serial was gone.
I chose "update immediately" and left the transfer info box checked.
Am I better leaving it unchecked?
I spent the day playing around with it and I have made another restore point in case.
Something interesting I noticed was when the serial was showing in the "about" box, the "register online" choice was still able to be clicked on, so I did.
It did something and then went grey so I am assuming at has confirmed my registration.
The serial is still showing in the box.
I checked the number against the one in the email and my account and it is all correct.
I don't know whether to update or just leave it because it's all working at the moment.
My main bug is within the rotate/crop but I spent the day working around it.
If the updates don't deal with my issues then I think I'm better leaving it where it is and see what Magix support have to say. They may be able to give me a fresh download and serial.
Thanks for taking the time to help.

Hi Doug

No, that will reset everything and you would have to activate/register again.

. . . . The program is back to the 15.0.0.56 . . . .

You are certainly missing several patches - the latest is 15.0.4.171.

. . . . My main bug is within the rotate/crop . . . .

What is the bug - you have mentioned this twice but given no detail ?

Did you do the Windows 10 system check in my tutorial that Jeff pointed you to ?

What is the version number of your Windows 10 installation ? To find this press and hold the Windows key and press R, in the dialog box that opens type winver and press enter.

Also try restarting the computer - Windows key, Power, Restart - not shutdown

@johnebaker
I have restarted many times.
The windows version is 4032 Build 15063-540
The bug with the rotate is when I try to level a photo using the rotate circle not the slider.
When I then try to do any brightness changes after the crop, the image drops down. This also happens when saving as JPEG.
It doesn't do it when I use the horizontal slider.
I haven't got to every suggestion yet because I am in contact with different people at the moment.
I have been trying to do the update as browj2 said but I lose the serial and it doesn't fix the issue anyway.
That's why I am talking to support.

I just updated to 15.0.4.171 and it caused more bugs than I had before.
Another restore back to yesterday and I am back to where I was.
I think I'll leave it there.
I have read the tutorial but because the same thing is happening on my windows 7 computer then I don't think it's a computer issue.

Hi Doug

I am having to select Direct X 9 to use HDR Gamma which I have never needed to do in any version.

This has been a problem for a few of us and appears to only affect Clean (new) installations of WIN10. My best guess is it is related to a component of earlier versions of DX that is missing in current versions of DX12 that come with WIN10. It will be interesting to see what Magix support say about the HDR fault as they are definitely aware of it.?

Hi Peter.
I just did a factory restore on my brand new computer thinking maybe it's a corrupt file somewhere.
Didn't work.
The thing that got me was my PX 7 needs direct X 9 as well and never has before.
I still can't update to the current version because it becomes unusable so looks like I'm stuck with the first version until They come up with a solution.
They will probably get back to me tonight with the time difference.
I think the problem lies with the windows 10 version because it's not the upgrade version,It's brand new.
Watch this space.

Hi

A bit of a long shot, however try this solution here. The .NET 3.5 framework may be turned off, it was on mine and stopped registration of an older version of Movie Edit Pro.

.NET is used by programs and Windows in many ways, in my case it was a registration issue that was fixed, is/was the .NET framework turned off and did you try the program with it turned on?

Not sure what the "Immediate update" problem / fix is and if it helps Doug any?

@DugsBugs

I just did a factory restore on my brand new computer thinking maybe it's a corrupt file somewhere.

As I said, it is not that a file is corrupt but that it was not in DX12 in Win10 in the first place. Do you have a discreet Nvidia or AMD card in your system and do you have it selected in Program Settings instead of the iGPU, for preview of the timeline. I presume we are talking about the same problem - where the preview goes very dark as soon as HDR is selected? This happens with all recent versions of MEP / VPX with the HDR function.

15.0.4.176 with a nice purple start up screen.
Now all they need to do is fix the slow response in the brightness sliders. They are very jittery compared to the first version. I will mention it to support tonight.
Thanks for all your feedback.

Now all they need to do is fix the slow response in the brightness sliders.

I thought that was just me! Same with the colour correction sliders, etc. Click on the spin box and use the mouse wheel for fine adjustment until they sort that one out.....although I have never been that happy with the jerkiness in earlier versions.
