UDF formated disk will not play on new Sony Blu-Ray disk player

DunnMike wrote on 11/12/2011, 3:51 PM

Using Magix Pro 3, I encoded a disk BDMV to produce a UDF Blu-Ray disk.  It will not play on by Blu-Ray disk player (A new Sony), but will play on my computer.  The Sony disk player does not say it is the wrong format. It  appears to recognize the disk, but will not start ist and does not show a menu.

Hi

AFAIK UDF is not a standard format that most DVD or BD players will play.

When you burn select one of the preset standard BD formats available inVPX.

Hi

Do you have the option to choose which UDF format version you use ie UDF 1.0,  UDF 2.5?

I seem to remember reading somewhere that only one of these standards should be used for BD - can not find the reference at the moment.

Hi

Did you get Pinnacle Studio to burn the ISO file directly or did you import into Pinnacle then burn to disc?

Do you have other disc burning software such as Nero or Roxio to burn the ISO file direct to disc?  If not try Starburn (freeware) which I find very good, and see if the disc plays OK.  This should tell you if it is VPX or Pinnacle creating the UDF problem.

If you can create the ISO in VPX I cannot think of a reason why you should not be able to burn directly to disc from VPX unless your Burn Routines need updating - these are available here.

Hi

Will be interested in your results as I too have a Sony BD player and so far I have not had a problem playing BD or AVCHD movies - even though I record them on to standard DVD discs (DVD-R and DVD-RW).

I may have just tempted fate .

Hi

Ask you correctly diagnosed from the log - it is your burner that is unsupported - this usually occurs when an obscure or in house manufactured drive is used.

I would consider replacing the drive with a well known brand eg Sony, Panasonic, LG etc.
