My camera produces 4gb clips. I put them on the timeline and when it goes from clip one to clip two I get a black screen for a fraction of a second. I've tried to butt the two clips together but it will not let me. How do I make a seamless transition from one clip to the next

You may have a mid-frame ending on the end of your first clip. In a nutshell, you need to zoom in close to the end of your first clip, put the Play marker on the frame point just to the left of the mid-frame, then hit U. That will cut off the partial-frame ending of clip 1. You'll then be able to butt the start of clip 2 hard up against the end of clip 1.
