I am using movie studio 25 (for usability possibly downgraded from Vegas Pro)

My project is a recorded poem and supporting video.

I want the text for the poem to scroll up the screen in time with the audio.

Is there a tutorial for this kind of thing?

Also, the file that I want to add the scrolling text too was created in Vegas Pro as 1080x1920 9:16 when I open it in Movie studio it opens 1920X1080 16:9 and I have a lot of black space. How do I make it open a file according to the file parameters

Re your second question, simply set up the movie settings to match your desired output format. It looks like you want vertical video for a phone/YT Short or FB reel.

Go to File>Settings>Movie (or shortcut key E) and from the droplist, you can choose various social media formats, or you can set up manually: type in width 1080, height 1920, ratio 9:16 and frame rate to desired (best to match your file's framerate).

Then your movie monitor will be shaped in the desired sense.

I'm not a whizz on scrolling titles so hopefully one of the experts will be along to help.

All my forum comments are based on or refer to my System 1.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

Has this been discussed in previous posts where AR is mentioned? I just separately opened a dozen 9:16 clips, MMS didn't adjust the project from 16:9 to 9:16 with any of them.. Surely this should be a basic feature.

Hi Gid.

All programs have default settings upon opening and for MMS and VPX that appears to be the traditional landscape orientation. If you don't tick the 'use settings as presets for new movies' in the Movie Project settings section, then you should get the option if you choose to open a new project to select 'Social Media' from the drop down section of the Video settings box that will give you portrait options. The only export preset available for 9:16 is 1920 x 1080.

When importing a clip, the program only seems to detect resolution and frame rate, not orientation.

Ticking that box just keeps the chosen settings rather than that of the last opened project, whether you tick that box or not you still get the option (your pic 1) when you open a New Project. & the rest is just setting the Movie settings as the OP needs to do.

When importing a clip, the program only seems to detect resolution and frame rate, not orientation.

Nope, if it did detect resolution it would give the option to change the movie from 16:9 to 9:16 but it doesn't, I've looked through my clips & the majority are rendered 9:16 so no orientation applied like you get from a phone clip that might say 90º or -90º (this incs whether the above box is ticked or not),

------------

I've tried the majority of my 9:16 files but if you want you can try the one on the video above.

I don't have this ticked so that's why I get that box every time I open a New Project.

& just to check I went into Settings - Reactivate Dialogs so all pop-ups should show..

Hi Gid.

If the program doesn't detect resolution, then why it doesn't place a landscape image across the blank space either side of a portrait image but places it inside leaving the top and bottom of a portrait setting blank if you don't accept the changes to landscape?

Or if placing a 4K image within a project that is HD the program asks if you want to change the project settings? Or it resizing a portrait video to fit the height of a landscape video?

@CubeAce Eh? You've moved the goal posts or twisted it, show me a 9:16 video being imported into 16:9 project & MMS then asking to change the resolution?, It doesn't.

How's about this one, this is a 1:1 1080x1080 clip imported into a 16:9 3840x2160 project. , again MMS ignores the resolution.

--------

As in your example MMS sometimes asks to adjust & sometimes it doesn't. I would expect a simple 16:9 to 9:16 ask to change to be a basic feature, & 1:1 videos are quite popular now for uploads so that also should be a simple recognition of aspect & pop-up asking to change the project. This is borked in my view.

Hi Gid.

I don't think I've moved the goal posts. I'm not trying to be obstinate. Just observing.

If a given project of a given ratio and size already has a correctly specified file on the timeline then any further similar sized imported file is sized to fit. That to me makes sense.

If a second file exceeds one of the projects frame lengths then you get a pop-up message if files already exist.

If however the first file imported exceeds any of the given frame measurements of the project then the program asks if you want to change the project parameters.

So frame sizes must be being measured but the rotational axis is not.

@CubeAce Hi, sorry maybe I used a poor choice of words in my reply, I didn't mean anything by it, what I'm trying to say is your earlier msg & the one you've just posted are not what I'm talking about, In both comments you have a 9:16 project & are adding 16:9 files or additional files. You also mentioned 4k & HD 🤷‍♂️

Like I wrote, MMS sometimes asks to adjust & that's what you're observing but sometimes it doesn't, yes your videos show it working but the way I'm asking about it doesn't which then relates to the OP's issue.

Try it the other way around, add a 9:16 video into 16:9 project.

Hi Gid.

No offence taken.

I try to make as much sense of Magix decisions as possible and I think their programs are designed for less experienced users with a lot done for those with a lot less experience. At least that is what the website claims. That brings with it some disadvantages for those that can't sort out such problems when they arise.

As such then I propose the following.

That is probably because there is no 16:9 ratio templates under the movie Social Media templates. Nor does any platform such as tiktok display such altered videos correctly with the preferred upload being 9:16 and under 72MBs, Android phone, as an MP4 video.

The Magix Social Media Template export parameters account for this with a much lower bit rate for export over the HD TV template so if the template changed orientation without also changing the bit rate the resulting project video uploaded to another platform such as YouTube would have a poor resolution by comparison. There is only the one export template option for a 9:16 MP4 export within the editor.

If you open a 9:16 ratio video in an HD TV template, the export bit rate is sufficient to keep the quality high and the template is for playback on an HD TV so I'm guessing the popup option isn't activated as the resulting file's quality is assured.

In the past, on other topics there has always been the discussion about the Magix templates having adequate quality settings and opinion has always been divided. For optimisation of quality over file size that may be the case but to then upload to social media and expect the result to be without an amount of degradation on the basic template settings, depending on the quality of the original file can be in my experience less than desirable.

Ray.
