Rewritten:
I've noticed that, when using the object trimmer (typically to set up a fade on either end of the object), the instant I use the fade in or fade out box controls, the audio object is deselected and so acts as if it has been ungrouped from the video.
If one then does a split, only the video object (which has remained yellow) is split. One must click down below the tracks to re-establish the "grouping".
The audio object is faded correctly.
Anybody else seeing this?

Yes, same here in VPX16 and MMS2024 (don't have 2025).
For others who want to try this. Select the object with Video Audio on separate tracks. Shift+N and you'll see that only the video part is selected. As you found, the fades go to both Video and Audio. Exit the trimmer. Note that only the video part is selected, even though VA are grouped. Move the playback marker somewhere along the object. T to split and only the video gets split. Now select the first part of the video and the entire unsplit audio is still grouped with it. Select the right split off part of the video and no audio is grouped.
Solution, select the object again before splitting.

Thanks John. I consider it to be a bug; if a video track is grouped with an audio track, it should stay that way in all circumstances (unless using a known action such as a audio-only fade using the ALT key). In my workflow, it's an extra couple of clicks/steps that seem unnecessary.
But wait, there's more. I have just found that, with MMS 2025, if one uses the object trimmer to set up a fade at either end, only the video is faded; the audio is left at full volume, even when the video and audio are grouped.
I think this is a bug; Movie Edit Pro 2021 doesn't do this; with MEP 2021 both the video and audio are faded. If I fade the video normally I would want the audio to fade as well.
Could someone else please confirm?
Thanks for that, I've worked out what I am doing wrong. I'm saving the fade as a Video Effect and then loading it on another clip, but only the video is being faded. Understandable, I suppose, since it's not technically an audio effect, even though they're grouped. It does fade both when simply dragging the handles, as you show.
Annoying though as it means you can't save the fade effect and apply it elsewhere; you have to do each end fade manually if you want the audio to fade in unison, unless there's another way?
