Sony DCR-PC100E connected over FireWire to Window 10 pc Move Studio 18

Philippe-Smetryns wrote on 1/18/2022, 9:45 AM

I have a Sony DCR-PC100E connected over FireWire to Window 10 pc. I've installed the Movie Studio 18 suite (trial version), however I can't find my camera back when I try to record/copy content. In W10 settings I find the camera in "devices & printers" under the name AV/C Subinit.

Can anyone help me on this?

Hi

In Movie Studio 18 are you not seeing the camera in the options indicated in the composite image below?

Hi John,

Thanks for your reply. After rebooting my PC I could see the camera! So I will test further, after the miniDV I'll also import SVHS cassettes. So far I'm quite pleased with the software and the support, promising.

Hi,

Is it possible to import miniDV cassettes with Movie Studio 2022 over FireWire in mp4 format. Standard it always create avi format which I need to convert afterwards to mp4. I've checked the settings but didn't find how to do it. Can you please help.

Many thanks, Philippe

@Philippe-Smetryns

No, you can't import that footage as mp4, sorry!

The default for DV Recording is, as you say, AVI or, more correctly, DV-AVI. There is a small box on the screen which John shows, immediately below the "DV Camera" box, labelled "Record DV as MPEG" but that is for MPEG- 2, not 4 and seems to require/expect use of the Main Concept Encoder, which seems not to run in the latest versions of MEP, VPX and, presumably, Movie Studio 2022!

Why do you specifically want to record the incoming video and audio as mp4? All Magix video products, in my experience, can work with DV-AVI footage without any problems. Editing the DV-AVI footage in MS 2022 and then finally exporting the finished video as mp4 (if that is your output format of choice) should give you the "best" output from your miniDV footage.

@Philippe-Smetryns

Hi

AFAIK the only formats available for recording are AVI, MXV (Magix custom format) and on the Source selection pane, see image below, MPEG (.mpg).

In all cases the video is going have to be exported from Movie Studio if you want MP4 format.

@emmrecs may be able to help more on this one as I do not have a Firewire device..

@johnebaker

Hi John.

AFAIK the only formats available for recording ... MXV. Are you sure about MXV? I can't find any option to select anything other than AVI or MPEG, in either MEP or VPX.

@Philippe-Smetryns

As John indicates, I do use Firewire for connection to computer from a small range of different digital video cameras, as well as to connect my audio interface to my computer. So I may be able to offer some guidance if you have a problem specifically with that technology!

Hi Jeff

. . . . Are you sure about MXV? . . . .

Not 100% as I have not done any DV transfers for many years, hence my tagging you into this topic.
