I just switched to Windows 8.1, and now my computer does even see "Rescue my video tapes". It says to try reinstalling, but when I put the usb port back in, nothing happens...the error states that it is "-6"....I can give you my serial number if you need it.
I am using an Hp 23 inch All in one computer.

Never give your serial number to anybody. Nobody should be asking for it and the information is not necesary to fix any problems you have.
Which version of RYVT are you using?
What colour is the USB device?
Was the Windows 8.1 an upgrade from version 7, Vista or XP or a clean install?

John, it is version 4.00, and the USB device is red. The Windows 8.1 was a clean install.

Assuming the program will start but crashes when you insert the USB device - try updating the USB device drivers from here. You may have to login using your email address and password that you registered the software with.
